Most of us operate 2-4 bank accounts, while we use one for day to day cash transactions, there is this one we tend to stash money and leave it untouched for a very long period of time.

With the way people die in this country, I strongly believe most if not all (especially the elderly ones) have a bank account no one knows anything about.

My question is, what happens to this monies left by the deceased?

Can banks identify the account of these dead people?

I have also witnessed cases where the family of the deceased can't access these monies due to incomplete paperwork or some other reasons.

Let's discuss...

Banks are naturally after deposits and will be happy to have such fund forever. If the regulatory authorities like NDIC CBN can force next of kin into the BVN record, all accounts balances under BVN can be collasped into one next of kin.

I've seen it from this angle too, not the bank's fault anyway.

For why should I give my money to another person to keep for me?

It is them who caused home armed robberies to force people to then give up their monies.

And it is because of this stealing is why they created govt to ensure that next of kin (nok) does directly continue use of the money even their names are in the bank forms.

They tried to do it alone hence the frustration. ..
They should have gotten a lawyer who would put them through. In such cases , I think you need to obtain a letter of administration from a high court. They'll inturn run proceedings with the bank of the deceased who will pay the money into the courts account. I think they take 10% and pay the rest into an estate account linked to all beneficiaries. It's a long snd tedious process's tho except "you get leg"

If he died without a will, his brother would need to obtain Letters of Administration from the Probate Registry of the State High Court where the deceased was domiciled at the time of his death. Once issued, the brother can lawfully access the bank account and recover the money.

I've 30k POS failed transaction for over 3years. Access bank said I can't claim the money after 2-3months . I go soon get their time for Twitter.

Get a good lawyer. They will get court order.

let the brother go to the probate registry and prove to them he is his benefiary by virtue of their relationship, he will pay some percentage of the money to government say 10 or 15% ,they will give authorisation to the bank to pay, it could take several months but its better than leaving it with the bank

Unclaimed balances are transferred to the CBN by commercial banks from time to time.

It is very easy to siphon those money.

I don't pray evil thing happens to me..

But I've arranged my life in such away that, no bank will eat my sweat, my wife has all my login details, even everybody owing me or I borrow money..


The family can get the money back through court and the persons death certificate

Don’t blame the bank for thy ignorance, apply for the letters of administration without Will of your cousin, once granted, the bank will release the funds.
