Under the new guidelines, only pupils and students completing Primary 6, Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3), and Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) will be permitted to hold graduation ceremonies.

Please l need help reconcilling this and the heading of the report.
Thank you.

This is a great policy. So there's someone in Tinubu's government that has small sense?

Pls they should adjust the textbook policy a little more.
Schools should give list of books, and they should stop issuing books with not for sale in book shops.
Student should sort their stationery, they should stop insisting that they buy note books and text from the school.

Over to private schools!

You see that text book area, dem no go green. Instead they will add 4 to 6 hrs price of the material since they now know it's reusable.

What about those ones wey say there child is brilliant or "robot" and so can stay in primary 5 or even primary 3 or 4 to write common entrance to J.S.S 1 grin

Kudos to the government on this initiative.

Some top 1% schools already run Textbook Reuse system: they buy textbooks and then lend them to the students for each term. You can't write in it and if you lose it or tear it, you must replace it.

It works for textbooks where one book for a single subject is N15,000 or N20,000 (I had to buy some and that's how much it cost for a Primary school book).

These 2 policies are an embarrassment to the whole nation

1. Reuse of textbooks is a crime.its against ethics. Just think piracy.how an entire nations education sector does not know this beats me.

The authors did not produce their book to be reused or photocopied

The country literarily justified poverty by giving kids old textbooks previously used ,who does that.whay does it cost them to budget for free learning resources,or produce books that can have open source or free use

How do we justify this kain poverty thinking

Sweden buys 1000 copies of any books published in it's country our own people are asking teachers to erase books to be reused. Education minister should be sacked for this alone

2. As for graduation for primary and secondary, all of them are not well again. Let parents and schools who choose to celebrate milestones that keep kids in school if they choose to,that's not what the ministry should be regulating

It's just another example of a stupid sub national policy from akwa ibom national is adopting as if they don't have brain

Which stakeholders did they ask before scrapping it? Those are things that should be optional and definitely not national policy

Village education minister we have here...

It is disappointing to see a school owner dismiss this policy as unworkable. Such resistance is part of the reason many well-intended government policies struggle to succeed in this country.

Nice one! He should kindly add that the graduation ceremonies should not be made compulsory for everyone. Some parents just can't afford it after sweating hard to pay fees and to provide other basic amenities for the child.

I am so happy and delighted as a mom of 3 . Pupils should be able to pass their textbooks to their younger ones . It is not good for parents to be buying same sets of textbooks every academic calendar . The printers & schools are just milking we the parents . This is a welcome development

Bad news to the HUNGARY AUTHORS. Some of these textbooks are full of typographical errors, as a teacher u have to "filter" the topic when writing your lesson plan

Why would the JSS3 students graduate? They are still in secondary school for crying out loud!

Good a thing some state Governors like those of Abia and Imo have banned the JSS3 graduation thing.

To reduce the financial burden on parents, the junior secondary school (JSS 3) external examination should be scrapped.
The junior West African School Certificate (WASC) can neither be used for entry into tertiary institutions nor used for job applications.
The result are being requested for in public schools for students that did theirs in private schools and wants to further SSS class in public schools

Federal government should upgrade school libraries, equip them with printed and non printed materials, employ librarians to man the libraries. To help students

Foreign textbooks cost more.

Now please, before you ask why I (in my professional field) don't use Nigerian textbooks, I will explain below:

Quality and Content

From print quality to content, Nigerian textbooks (for primary school) are of lower quality than foreign.

And I'm saying that as someone who loves buying Nigerian products.

We simply don't have the machinery, paper quality and inks to match foreign printed stuff. When we go outside to print, we go to India and ask for cheap printing.

And when you see a decently printed Nigerian textbook, its' price can't be covered by even schools catering to the lower middle class. E.g a decent Social Studies book by Farafina is only used in schools paying N350,000/2nd term (that's the cheaper term o). I didn't see it used in cheaper schools (like Church schools or govt schools or private schools in low income areas).

Iconic (the Math textbook line) won't sell to schools that don't have a large student body (they're looking at their profits). So those schools use Showers or other affordable textbooks.

Content

I teach STEM. Forget the content of any Nigerian textbook, they're not challenging if you want your kids to compete globally.

I thoroughly dislike most Nigerian Quantitative Reasoning textbooks because they don't seem to realise what they're meant to teach. So the questions will be set anyhow, using values that me as a parent, I have to bring out calculator to punch.

I use British books and Singapore curriculum (throw in a touch of China here and there 🙂). Nigeria doesn't have a Science textbook for primary that I will use (I throw them away) and when you see the curriculum for even Junior Secondary...head scratching 🫣😑😱 (e.g ask your kids what a Simple Machine is, then compare their answers to Google).

So that's why my textbooks are expensive, na only Social Studies books I dey use from here.

I develop curriculum and train new methods for Science and Math primary teachers and I'm tired of Nigeria and Nigerians' un-seriousness.
