Date: 18th of September, 1960

Government College Ibadan (founded 28 February 1929) is a boys' secondary school located on the hills of Apata Ganga in Ibadan, Nigeria.

The founding fathers of Government College Ibadan were Selwyn MacGregor Grier, Director of Education, Southern Provinces, who conceived the idea of the school, and E. R. Swanston, Inspector of Education.

The school was conceived and founded on 28 February 1929. The first principal was C. E. Squire. The second principal was H. T. C. Field. V. B. V. Powell was the third principal.

Government College was modelled on the British public boarding schools of the era, and the first set of students numbered 29.

During the Second World War, the school temporarily moved to several sites before finally resettling back at its original site. The alumnus popularly called Old Boys, holds an annual reunion programme in order to connect former students.

In the period before the dissolution of the country's Western Region, the school earned the fame of being the best secondary school in Nigeria.

Some of its notable alumni's include the following:

Adegoke Adelabu, Akinola Aguda, T. M. Aluko, Segun Awolowo, Wale Babalakin, Cyprian Ekwensi, Oba Erediauwa of Benin-City, Abel Guobadia, Christopher Kolade, Victor Omololu Olunloyo, Femi Osofisan, Ayo Rosiji, Olaokun Soyinka and his father, Wole Soyinka.

65 years later, most schools still use this same set of archaic facilities to teach science till now. Some schools don't even have lab.

Kushites:
"MOST SCHOOLS"?

HOW MANY SCHOOLS HAVE YOU BEEN TO IN NIGERIA TO CHECK?

YOU JUST OPEN YOUR MOUTH TO TYPE RUBBISH BECAUSE YOU HAVE INTERNET, ABI?
shocked
As a book publisher, I do business with schools nationwide. I visit different schools in different states almost on daily basis. Believe me when I say most schools in Nigeria don't have standard laboratories. Some don't even have at all; (especially all these mushroom private schools). I'm a Nigerian, I'm not talking down my country, I'm only saying it as it is.

BTW, your insults is of no meaning to me. You can keep them coming.

Unfortunately, those who enjoyed premium public education in that era grew up and destroyed the system, ensuring that those of us coming behind them suffered neglect - or attended their own private schools . . .

My granddad who was a cocoa farmer sent a daughter of his to school, and she got pregnant.

He swore never to send another daughter to school and he kept to his word for decades.

Eventually, he relented like any good dad would and sent another of his daughters to school. She too got pregnant.

Such is life! grin grin grin grin grin

I am in full support of female education.

A good number of schools in Nigeria still do not have those apparatuses.

The standard is on a downward spiral

Do you want to pay the fees or taxes we need to upgrade the equipment?

Ar the time the photo was taken there were less than six or seven government colleges. Most schools were mission schools. Getting into those government colleges was tough work. One wrote a competitive exam where you were competing with kids from all over the region

Today we got over sixty federal government schools , numerous more government colleges and a host more primary and secondary schools all of which must be funded on a government budget that before looting is not up to what Harvard spends in a year. Ade nearly 100 government university to the mix. All of them on fees less than chickenfeed

And you expect them to have good quality?

Yes we must stop corrupt people. Yes we must stop stealing. Still doesn't change the fact that budget for all government owned schools at all level is still not up to the minimum 25% of the national budget. And it still needs to be more than that
