CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE ON HER SON'S DEATH

"My son would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th.

We were in Lagos for Christmas. Nkanu had what we first thought was just a cold, but soon turned into a very serious infection and he was admitted to Atlantis hospital.

He was to travel to the US the next day, January 7th, accompanied by Travelling Doctors. A team at Johns Hopkins was waiting to receive him in Baltimore. The Hopkins team had asked for a lumbar puncture test and an MRI. The Nigerian team had also decided to put in a 'central line' (used to administer iv medications) in preparation for Nkanu's flight. Atlantis hospital referred us to Euracare Hospital, which was said to be the best place to have the procedures done.

The morning of the 6th, we left Atlantis hospital for Euracare, Nkanu carried in his father's arms. We were told he would need to be sedated to prevent him from moving during the MRI and the 'central line' procedure.

I was waiting just outside the theater. I saw people, including Dr M, rushing into the theater and immediately knew something had happened.

A short time later, Dr M came out and told me Nkanu had been given too much propofol by the anesthesiologist, had become unresponsive and was quickly resuscitated. But suddenly Nkanu was on a ventilator, he was intubated and placed in the ICU. The next thing I heard was that he had seizures. Cardiac arrest. All these had never happened before. Some hours later, Nkanu was gone

It turns out that Nkanu was NEVER monitored after being given too much propofol. The anesthesiologist had just casually carried Nkanu on his shoulder to the theater, so nobody knows when exactly Nkanu became unresponsive.

How can you sedate a sick child and neglect to monitor him? Later, after the 'central line' procedure, the anesthesiologist casually switched off Nkanu's oxygen and again decided to carry him on his shoulder to the ICU!

The anesthesiologist was CRIMINALLY negligent. He was fatally casual and careless with the precious life of a child. No proper protocol was followed.

We brought in a child who was unwell but stable and scheduled to travel the next day. We came to conduct basic procedures. And suddenly, our beautiful little boy was gone forever. It is like living your worst nightmare. I will never survive the loss of my child.

We have now heard about two previous cases of this same anesthesiologist overdosing children. Why did Euracare allow him to keep working? This must never happen to another child."

I know it will come to this. This is scandalous if true. The child might have survived if they visited a local chemist to attend to them.

Nigeria happened to her same way it happened to Anthony Joshua .

If we say that the leaders should give us a working country, some sycophants will say that we are hating. See how December has turned out for prominent diasporan Nigerians who came back home to there fatherland to celebrate Christmas. First, it was Anthony Joshua and now Chimamanda adichie. This is a disgrace to this country . Nothing works and when we fight so hard to get our leaders to do what they were elected to do, some people will call us bitter and hateful.

Nigeria has happened to Anthony Joshua, Ngozi Chimamanda adichie, who's next?

May we not be unfortunate in this country, Amen.

Why bring the boy down to Nigeria? Is there no other place in Europe to do Christmas?
The air we breath down here is polluted. Look at the skies and compare.

RICH people in Nigeria live like gods...until they face a MEDICAL EMERGENCY.

The WORST part in this case is that Adichie had access to the BEST medical care in Nigeria.

YET they are still so NEGLIGENT and NONCHALANT that they OVERDOSE a child on anesthesia and still CASUALLY carried him on the shoulder.

Healthcare in Nigeria is a JOKE.

Many of Nigerian Doctors and Nurses would DIE in jail if they tried HALF of what they do here overseas.

Now that this happened to a FAMOUS person, the government will make SMALL noise, the hospital will release a statement, sack the RECKLESS anesthesiologist and hope everything blows over.

Then, they'll RETURN to the status quo.

Incidents like this one should be a CATALYST for comprehensive REFORMS in the healthcare sector.

MANY Nigerian health workers are very quick to ANNOUNCE the disparity in pay between those who work in Nigeria and those who work abroad.
They NEVER talk about the disparity in the STANDARD they are expected to match.

Healthcare and security are part of the reasons people RUN away from Nigeria.

This happened in a TOP-OF-THE-LINE PRIVATE HOSPITAL in Lagos.
Imagine what ORDINARY folks face on a daily basis in Government Hospitals in places like Osogbo.

MADNESS!

1. What killed the child?

2. Didn’t the original report claim he died overseas?

3. I knew she would find someone to blame. Na her way.

4. Nnewi can’t perform miracles, abi? Left to her the place is heaven on earth.

1. He died due to an anaesthetic overdose by the doctor.

2. Who wrote the original reporthuh

3. Pray you don't find yourself in a similar situation.

4. The baby died in the hospital and couldn't be resuscitated. What miracle were you expecting to happen? Again, I hope you don't find yourself in such a situation undecided

Please let us respect the bereaved family.

This is an account of a grieving writer-mother who is a non-professional in that field, I will await the account of the professionals she indicted and subsequent outcome of an independent investigation.

Till then, my sincere condolences to her and the whole family.

Let's be careful about what we wish the land. The land will bless you if you bless her.

Hmmm.

I don't know the full story, but I can imagine that if that anesthesiologist, at a Young age, had told his parents that he wanted to become a DJ or a carpenter, I'm sure they'd have threatened to disown him

Most of our politicians, engineers, Religious leaders are incompetent simply because it wasn't their choice to become these professions. it was mostly forced on them.

The passion to learn wasn't there, so they learned just to pass exams, not enough to know what the profession was about

Choice-less children become incompetent leader tomorrow

Most of the people blaming our incompetence government in Nigeria are parents who force their children to become lawyers, doctors and engineers. Tomorrow these children become incompetent professionals and they complain

We thank God for the gift of karma and reincarnation.
We suffer to experience to learn. If we don't learn from our suffering, we waste it

Most medical professionals in Nigeria are so incompetent. Just sue the damn hospital and let the licence of that anaesthetologist be revoked.

Learn to take your own advice. When you abrogated the incident to her decision to birth the baby via surrogacy, suggesting that it was a 'complication' from the surrogacy process and that it is known to come with health issues, did you wait for a professional? Or are you a professionalhuh

Ishilove can bear witness from that thread.

When, in your full and usual political sycophancy you used the incident as a proof that health related deaths happen everywhere, and as such those who Nigeria have 'happened to', who blame Nigeria itself for the avoidable deaths that have befallen their loved ones are somewhat ignorant and blindsided to the true picture of things, why didn't you wait for the true picture of things?

Maybe you would have realised that the baby actually did die in Nigeria, and not in the USA as you thought?

Again, learn to take your own advice. What goes around, comes around.

You're completely ignorant and it's pathetic to even read your incoherent interpretation of what was clearly what she informed the public.

Whose business is it how she had the children before bringing it to the public sphere that she had them through a surrogate woman and mother who carried the pregnancy? It is nobody's business and I don't consider it wise to give such unsolicited information to the public.

I will not swallow the bait to give you free education on the probable link between surrogacy and this matter.

Those who blame Asiwaju Tinubu for everything will reap same. In life, you reap what you sow. If you hate and curse Nigeria and the leaders you hate, it's same hate/curse you will get from Nigeria and the leaders.

Again, you couldn't comprehend my post and why I will always defend my country against unpatriotic elements.

May God console her and the family. I have already read the preliminary response of the Euracare hospital and it it's contrary to her account as I earlier stated.

You should join reasonable people like me calling for an independent investigation instead of crying more than the bereaved.

I will block you subsequently as it's like you will still struggle to comprehend my post.

In Nigeria, due to the Economic situation, professionalism is almost gone. Most medical practitioners have turned to Tiktokers or multiple business vendors online, selling hair, selling makeup, selling shoes.

For a anesthesiologist to give excess dose of Propofol to an already sick child shows someone not paying attention.
