Nigerian Anaesthetists’ Society Seeks Involvement In Lagos Probe Of Chimamanda Adichie Son’s Death

The Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA) has stressed the need for specialist input as the Lagos State Government probes allegations of medical negligence linked to the death of the son of renowned author Chimamanda Adichie.

The call comes amid public attention generated by Adichie’s accusation that Euracare Multispecialist Hospital, where her son died, acted negligently.

The hospital has since denied the claim. In response, the Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency has begun an investigation following directives from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In a statement issued on Monday, the national president of the NSA, Alhassan Mohammed, welcomed the government’s intervention but emphasised that the circumstances of the case require the direct involvement of a senior anaesthesia specialist, given the nature of the medical procedure involved, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The alleged medical negligence appears to have centred around the physician anaesthetist, who is a member of the team that carried out the procedure to facilitate MRI,” the NSA said.

In this regard, the NSA recommends very strongly that a senior and experienced physician anaesthetist should be co-opted into the investigative panel for a comprehensive review of the incident.”

The NSA described the incident as a “sad one indeed,” adding that ”we have an opportunity to reflect on the practice of Anaesthesia in Lagos state and Nigeria by diligently implementing the recommendations of the investigative panel.”

Mr Mohammed noted that beyond determining culpability, the investigation presents a broader opportunity to review clinical standards and strengthen anaesthesia practice across Lagos State and the country, particularly in high-risk diagnostic procedures requiring sedation.

Last Thursday, SaharaReporters reported that Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, lost a 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.

The child died last Wednesday, following a brief illness.

The family confirmed the loss in a statement issued on Thursday by Omawumi Ogbe and asked for privacy during the difficult time.

I've seen some nairalanders comment that they wanted to pursure a case of medical negligience in the courts, yet, 'my relatives prevailed on me'

Also, MDCN does prosecute erring doctors, and yes, hospitals get sued, so there is that too.

But keep in mind that doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc are working in a bad environment, and are in many places overworked (I worked in a large hospital where one nurse could be responsible for over 30 patients at a go once..in the night!. Tell me, how would that one manage.?)

Poor man no really get say for this country.

Solidarity because it's Chimanmada. Though, very sad and I offer my condolences.

While for those who are not influential and without the finances - they barely made it to the news, and for the few that did, nothing was done about them.

Get money and be influential - even the universe will fight your course.

Idiots and nincompoops. This loss is the wirst that can happen to any living thing. Even animals cry over the loss of their offspring, not to talk of humans.

That aside, with the type of hatred that Chimamanda and other Igbos hate for Yorubas, I thought they will never step on Yoruba soil again

Woman Dies After Kano Hospital Abandoned Scissors In Her During Surgery As Family Demands Justice
January 13, 2026
NEWS

A case of alleged medical negligence has thrown a family into mourning after a woman, identified as Aishatu Umar, reportedly died following months of severe pain caused by a pair of scissors allegedly left inside her body during a surgical operation at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center, Kano State.

SaharaReporters gathered that Aishatu Umar passed away on Monday at about 1am, after enduring unbearable abdominal pain for several months following a surgery carried out in September 2025.

The incident was made public by a commentator, Abubakar Mohammed, who disclosed the matter in a Facebook post, stating that the deceased was his sister-in-law.

According to him, Aishatu Umar is survived by her husband and five children.

“She was living in Kano when she fell ill a few months ago and underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in September,” Mohammed said.

According to the family, trouble began shortly after the surgical procedure. Aishatu reportedly complained persistently of severe abdominal pain, prompting multiple visits back to the hospital where the operation was performed.

However, rather than conducting thorough investigations, the family alleged that hospital staff repeatedly administered pain relievers and sent her home, despite her worsening condition.

“She suffered this pain for four months,” Mohammed said.

It was not until two days before her death that comprehensive medical tests and scans were eventually carried out. The results, according to the family, were shocking.

"Just two days ago, tests and scans were finally conducted, revealing that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the September operation," Mohammed disclosed.

Following the discovery, efforts were reportedly made to prepare her for a corrective surgery to remove the foreign object. However, those efforts came too late.

“Efforts were being made to perform a corrective surgery yesterday, but her time had run out, and she passed away."

The family has described the incident as a clear case of gross professional negligence, questioning how such a critical surgical instrument could be forgotten inside a patient’s body by trained medical professionals.

“Is this not pure negligence?” Mohammed asked. “Truly, every soul has its appointed time, but how can professional doctors forget scissors inside a patient? ”

He added that the incident not only cost a woman her life but also tarnishes the reputation of healthcare workers and health authorities in the state.

The family is now calling on the Kano State Government, as well as relevant health regulatory bodies, to urgently investigate the matter and ensure accountability.

“We call on the Kano State Government to investigate and take action,” the family said. “We call on the health regulatory bodies to investigate and take action. We demand justice for Aishatu Umar.”

As of the time of filing this report, the management of the Abubakar Imam Urology Center and Kano State health authorities had not issued any official response to the allegations.
