In November 2021, the DSS invaded the home of Mr and Mrs Ifedi in Enugu and bundled Husband and wife away, abandoning their 4 young children. The couple were transported to DSS Headquaters Abuja and detained there on suspicion of being IPOB members. In 2022, the DSS secretly transfered the couple to Wawa detention centre, Niger state, and kept there without charge. Despite public outcry at the manner of their abduction, despite repeated condemnation by Amnesty International and other human rights groups, the couple remained in detention until 2025 when spirited efforts by Omoyele Sowore, Deji Adeyanju and others saw the release of Sunday Ifedi. Sadly, Sowore revealed today that it has been discovered that Calista Ifedi died 2 years ago at Wawa detention centre. Sowore called Sunday Ifedi to tell him his wife was no more.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has admitted that Mrs. Calista Ifedi, who was detained since 2021 for allegedly selling food to IPOB members, died while in custody at Wawa Barracks. Her detention was unlawful, she was denied due process, and reports indicate she fell ill in custody without receiving adequate medical care. This admission confirms a grave abuse of power and a tragic failure of the Nigerian state to protect life. Mrs. Calista Ifedi died at Wawa Barracks two vears ago under unlawful detention by the lawless Department of State Services (DSS). I share this painful account to bear witness to a grave injustice and to expose the burden of impunity inflicted or Nigerians by the DSS.
The DSS has now finally acknowledged the death of Mrs. Calista Ifedi. She was arrested alonaside her husband, Sunday Ifedi, at their home in Enugu on November 23, 2021. According to her husband who was only released in December 2025, the last time he saw his wife was in March 2022, when they were taken from DSS headquarters to Wawa Barracks, separated, and never allowed to see each other again.

Following sustained advocacy by Amnesty International Nigeria, myself, Barrister Adeyanju Deji, and many others, it became clear that Mrs Ifedi's so-called "offence" was that members of IPOB had allegedly bought food at her restaurant in Enugu. For this, she was violently taken away disappeared into detention, and denied due process.
While in detention at Wawa Barracks, Mrs. Ifedi fell ill. Instead of receiving medical care, her repeated complaints were ignored. She was allegedly taunted and left to deteriorate until she died. Her husband was never informed of her death. Tonight I personally called him to convey this devastating news before making it public.
These are egregious crimes. Nigeria must immediately shut down the Wawa Barracks detention facility. Every official involved in the unlawful detention, neglect, and death of Mrs Calista Ifedi must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.

This tragedy occurred during the period which Yusuf Bichi presided over the DSS with unchecked brutality, aided and protected by Abubakar Malami SAN. under the criminal Muhammadu Buhari regime. History must not forget, and justice must not be denied

Nigeria happened to her. It reminds me of a friend who was framed for murder and laid to waste for three years in prison. Everybody I related the story to blamed him. The story made front page thrice on Nairaland — illiterates here blamed him. It shows we are as wicked as these people who consciously commit atrocities. It’s obvious. They are members of the public. They didn’t fall from space or ascend from hell.

There have been allegations that they also into Organ harvesting, just like Tiger Base in Owerri as claimed..

Igbo lobbyists should write a good report on this matter, with his name and others to the US government, to be documented as a person of interest in the fight against Christian persecution and Islamic terrorism in Nigeria.


This is exactly how they 'disappear' people in Nigeria DSS facilities and police cells without proper investigation, prosecution and trial.

Her family should sue, Yusuf Buchi should be mentioned as a defendant in that matter and the Americans and Canadians should be called to monitor the case with monthly updates published in the media.

How many people selling food to Boko Haram have been arrested? It is over 19 years now. Not one sponsor of Boko Haram has been arrested. Not one. The UAE sent a list of those sponsors to the Buhari government. Nothing was done about it. The present government is foot dragging as well.

Adaka boro was also imprisoned illegally by the Igbos & heaven didn’t fall. If we want to solve Nigeria issue, we need to start from 1960. Then anybody that’s found guilty of anything should be punished..

The blanket justification for arrests or extra judicial killings in the South East is SUSPECTED IPOB MEMBERS, Suspected kidnappers and the usual Suspected internet fraudster. Since yesterday the news of Kastina state government asking for the release of 79 convicted bandits as part of a peace deal with bandit leaders is turning ears. But such news is not trending. Even the commissioner for internal security in the State boldly said people who are disgruntled should go to court. He likens the situation to a prisoner swap. Now imagine this in the SE!
