APC Hunts Down Students, Negotiates With Bandits – Atiku On Ekpoma Protest by Bobloco(op): 3:55pm On Jan 13

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has condemned the arrest and detention of students of Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma, describing the action as a sign of growing intolerance under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement posted on his official X page on Tuesday, Atiku expressed concern over what he termed the “high-handedness” of the Federal Government in responding to students’ protests against insecurity in the Ekpoma area of Edo State.

According to him, it is unacceptable that authorities would respond to peaceful protests by arresting and detaining dozens of students, noting that the right to protest is guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution and upheld by the courts.

Atiku reminded the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress, APC, administration that the primary responsibility of government is the security and welfare of citizens, stressing that students should not be punished for raising legitimate concerns about their safety.

He further argued that if the same level of energy used in arresting protesters were applied to tackling terrorism and banditry, rather than negotiating with criminals, communities across the country would be safer.

The former Vice President called for the immediate and unconditional release of all those he described as unjustly detained for exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest.

Agbadorians tried to pass the buck to Katsina on the release of 70 hardened terrorists but since when did jailed terrorists fall under the purview of states? It is no longer in doubt that the negotiations and release of terrorists that has become a norm under this regime is a federal government-backed policy. Capitulation to terrorism to buy temporary peace for election-winning purposes is not a wise nor sustainable strategy, it is total surrender.

He's right tho. Security agents can quickly track down students and critics who have done no harm but just opening their mouth, while criminals and bandits roam free. This narrative really needs to change.

Because bandits use people as human shields.

Most bandits hide among the people in their communites, and they force the people to do so at gunpoint. Imagine a armed raid to capture bandits. A lot of innocent people die. Guess who gets blamed? Government

Also, the bandits are operating like the Mafia in Italy and America. That means they have a lot of support among some of the people and local authorities. Note that when the Italian government decided to start fighting the Mafia, things got ugly. As in police, judges, witnesses, and other innocents were being killed and assasinated. It took the Italians over 30 years, if not more, to wipe out large swathes of the mafia, and they are still ACTIVE. Same with USA Mafia.

Students are easy to catch, most of them are strangers in the community where they are and they are easily isolated and separated. And they are not armed, or a mafia.
