I see too many cars driving with the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) light on. When I ask the owner, they say Ah, it’s just the sensor, the tire is okay. Let me tell you why that logic is dangerous. Your car’s ECU (Brainbox) uses that light to warn you about Pressure Differential. Even if the tire looks round to your eyes, if it’s 5 PSI lower than the others, your car is unbalanced. 1. The Fuel Trap: Your engine works harder. Period. 2. The Inner Tread Secret: Often, the tire looks fine from the outside, but a slow puncture is eating the inner tread where you can't see it. 3. The Sensor Myth: Even if the sensor is bad, fix it. Why? Because the day you actually have a real puncture at 100km/h, you won't know until it's too late. Have you always wondered your car picked a nail on the road but you can't tell not until after few days of inflating that particular tire/in the process of washing your car yourself before discovering or concluding there's a problem with the tire? Don't ignore the electronics your car uses to keep you alive. I’ve dropped a Free 5-Point Audit Checklist in my signature below. It covers more than just tires, it covers the Engineering Certainty every owner needs. Check it out.

TPMS sensor is another sensor too many. |

OkanlawonB:I hear you clearly. To many, it feels like cars are becoming over-complicated with electronics. But here’s it, That one sensor too many is actually a Financial Guardrail. In our terrain, you can pick up a slow puncture at 2:00 PM and not notice it visually until 6:00 PM the next day when the sidewall is already shredded. By then, you aren't just buying a ₦1000 patch; you're buying a ₦250,000 tire(premium set)/ ₦75,000 tire (sub-standard)/ ₦35,000 tire (Tokunbo) per one of the mentioned prices. The sensor is there to give you the 10-minute headstart you need to save the tire and protect your suspension. It's not just another sensor, it's the only thing standing between a small fix and a major expressway blowout. Engineering Certainty beats managing it every time. |

One thing I find cumbersome about TPMS sensors is their not being plug and play like most other sensors in vehicles are. TPMS sensors need to be programmed for the particular vehicle and thereafter relearned to/ married to/ synchronized with/ calibrated for the particular vehicle. Aside this, the power supply of TPMS sensors come from button cell batteries which are embedded in them and are bound to empty or go bad after some time. Most other sensors in a vehicle are powered directly from the car battery. The relearning procedure of the first generation TPMS of 2014 is mostly done manually using a relearning tool while most newer vehicles are capable of automatic relearning. |

A basic TPMS relearning tool which may be necessary to reset a newly mounted wheel to the vehicles ECU.

A more comprehensive TPMS service tool which in addition to relearning can also Programme a new TPMS sensor, also capable of cloning sensors.
