So you are not going to wash the meat?
kripen:
Let me give this, when a meat is killed to store never try to wash away the blood before putting in the fridge, just put it in the fridge and see the way the meat will be fresher anytime you want to use it.

But the glass will break inside the freezer na.
SixSeven:
Stop using plastic to store food and water.

When you open your tuna or tin tomato, don't keep storing it with the container, pour it into a glass

Onetechnews:
Let me start with this:
Not all food belongs in the fridge.
And not all food should stay soaked or exposed for long.

Because the truth is, many of us are trying to eat well, but small food storage mistakes are silently stealing nutrients from our food.

This isn’t about “don’t eat this” or “don’t cook that.”
It’s about how we store food at home, those little habits we don’t think twice about.

If you’ve ever kept onions in the fridge, soaked rice overnight, or stored vegetables anyhow, this is for you. Some of the things, we do feel convenient but nutritionally? They’re not helping us.

Let’s break it down.
1. Storing Raw Onions in the Fridge ❌

This one is very common.

Many Nigerian homes put raw onions straight into the fridge, thinking it will “preserve” them.

Here’s the problem
Cold temperature turns the starch in onions into sugar, making them:

Soft and mushy

Prone to mold

Less nutritious over time

Also, onions absorb moisture easily. Once they get damp in the fridge, they spoil faster.
What to do instead ✔️

Store raw onions in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place

Keep them away from potatoes (they make each other spoil faster)

Only refrigerate cut onions, and even then, seal them properly and use within 1–2 days

2. Soaking Rice in Water and Refrigerating It ❌

This one is popular, especially for people who want to “save time” or soften rice before cooking.

Yes, soaking rice can help reduce cooking time.
But leaving rice soaked in water for too long, especially inside the fridge, is another story.

What happens?

Water-soluble nutrients like B vitamins leach into the water

The rice can start fermenting

Taste and nutritional quality reduce

And if that water is thrown away?
That’s nutrients gone with it.
Better option ✔️

If you must soak rice, limit it to 20–30 minutes

Do not refrigerate soaked rice for long hours

If soaking overnight, drain and cook early the next morning

3. Washing Vegetables Before Storing Them ❌

This one looks hygienic but causes damage.

Washing vegetables like ugu, spinach, or scent leaf before storage introduces moisture.
Moisture = faster spoilage + nutrient loss.

You’ll notice:

Slimy leaves

Bad smell

Loss of vitamin C

Do this instead ✔️

Store vegetables unwashed

Wash only when you’re ready to cook

Wrap leafy vegetables in paper towel or clean cloth before refrigerating

4. Overcooking and Then Storing Food for Too Long ❌

We like to cook in bulk. It saves gas, time, and stress, no judgment here.

But cooking food and storing it for 3–5 days reduces its nutritional value, especially:

Vitamin C

B vitamins

Antioxidants

Each reheating round breaks nutrients further.
Smart storage tip ✔️

Cook what you can finish in 1–2 days

Reheat only the portion you need

Avoid reheating the same food multiple times

5. Leaving Palm Oil Exposed to Light ❌

Palm oil is rich in antioxidants (yes, it is).
But light and heat destroy those nutrients fast.

Leaving palm oil:

In transparent bottles

Close to heat or sunlight

…reduces its vitamin A content.
What works better ✔️

Store palm oil in dark containers

Keep it away from heat and sunlight

Cover properly after use

6. Storing Tomatoes at the Wrong Temperature ❌

Fresh tomatoes don’t like extreme cold.

Putting them in the fridge:

Reduces flavor

Slows nutrient activity

Makes them watery

Best practice ✔️

Store fresh tomatoes at room temperature

Refrigerate only when they’re already overripe and you want to slow spoilage

The Truth Nigerians Don’t Hear Enough

Healthy eating is not just:

What you buy

What you cook

It’s also how you store your food.

You can spend money on good food and still lose nutrients just by storing it wrongly. Small changes, like where you keep onions, how long you soak rice, or how you store vegetables—make a big difference over time.
Final Thought

You don’t need expensive supplements or foreign diets to eat better.
Sometimes, it’s just about handling the food you already have the right way.

If this opened your eyes even a little, then it’s worth it
Because good nutrition starts from your kitchen, not the pharmacy.
Good nutrition starts from your kitchen, not the pharmacy.
Very apt!!

Great point but glass itself is stable at freezer temperatures because cold does not damage it. Breakage happens due to stress, not because it is cold. That stress comes from three main factors, 1. using non–freezer-safe glass 2. overfilling so expanding food pushes against the walls or 3. exposing the glass to sudden temperature changes.

When freezer-safe or tempered glass is used properly, it is routinely and safely used worldwide for freezing food. This is why manufacturers clearly label containers as freezer-safe and why labs and commercial kitchens rely on glass rather than plastic.

Leave space at the top for food expansion, let hot food cool before freezing, and avoid taking frozen glass directly into hot water or a hot surface. When used correctly, glass is safer than plastic because it does not leach chemicals, absorb odors, or degrade over time.
