Lifestone:As u have never made mistake in Ur life b4 na. What the Dr did is bad. But not use legal case to chase everyone including who will treat u for malaria. Surgery is a team work, not only the Dr. Infact the Dr is the person in charge of the instruments. Mistake can occur. I only blame prolonged delay to find the cause. |

The hospital should go through their records, to contact patients that went through surgery, if any, for proper medical x-ray to prevent reoccurring incident. Rest in peace to the deceased. |

The way the Nigerian social media speaks against doctors, you'd think nobody goes to the hospital anymore . Even the poll that is put on the thread is strongly biased against the medical doctor, every option indicates one form of punishment or the other, no single room for appropriate investigation or verification of the facts of the case! |

oz4real83: FutureFocus: Naustine: Toosure70: Onegai:And in response to all the above, and note that this does not excuse negligence, but shows that medical negligence is not a Nigerian phenonemon alone In the United States, about a dozen sponges and other surgical instruments are left inside patients’ bodies every day, resulting in around 4,500 to 6,000 cases per year, according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists. There is no federal reporting requirement for retained or forgotten items, making a precise count difficult.I guess that the doctors in the USA are quota doctors, running abbatoirs, or are quite simply not up to the standards seen in K dramas. I also guess that USA Hospitals are death traps, and we should all avoid them as well. And from England NHS England Data: Incidents of foreign objects being left in patients after surgery are classified as "never events" (serious, preventable incidents). There were 291 "finished consultant episodes" involving a foreign object accidentally left in a body during surgical care in 2021-2022 in EnglandAgain this does not excuse medical negligence on the doctors in Kano's part, just shows that Nigerian hospitals are not unique in having retained sugrical instruments in patients. Good morning. |

Lifestone:I can relate to this, two years ago I went to a clinic in Benin city I met a doctor who diagnose my health issue using Google, I was shocked a doctor using internet to diagnose a patient. I wasn't satisfied with his diagnosis, went to another health centre where I was told the initial diagnosis was wrong. |

ozo13:I guess anyhowness is present in England where there are over 250 cases of such per year, or in the US where there are between 4500-6500 cases per year, and those are both considered to be underestimations. |

Onegai:TV dramas don't show how medical facilites work in real life. Take the drama House MD. Doctors are shown doing all the medical tests, breaking into patient's houses to look for potential causes of illness...without the patient's consent or even a court order, doing operations (even though they are not board certified surgeons) and so forth. Things that they don't do in real life. And House's bedside manner is of the kind that would not even get him employed in any hospital at all.(Bedside manner is very important for anyone, not just doctors, working with patients) Or another medical show from the USA (about an autisitic doctor) where a nurse is shown acting as the scrub in her wife's operation. Not very ethical (too emotionally close to be objective in the case)..and naturally there is a retained towel in the case. Even when they show 'everything working'...you have to take it with a pinch of salt, as everything is being written as the script calls for it. If the script calls for a medical malpractice, and no one gets punished....you won't accept that as being properly run hospital eh? All in all, just as crimes on detective shows are not solved in 'days' (as seen on the various itierations of CSI), hospitals don't work as seen 'on the shows or movies. |

dontai:LOL...a dead person won't need repair. ON a more serious note, you are very right. I once read of one woman who at 48 was fit(she was a triathlete, google for it if you don't know what that means), healthy (she was a vegetarian, no sugar, no fat , no meat in her diet , no or low carbs)...who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Person wey be the last kind of person you go think when you talk about cancer.. |

The Nigerian system is always REACTIVE, never PROACTIVE. Na so so probe, panel, investigation after the damage is done that always lead to nothing....always medicine after death So that surgery unit didn't notice the scissors was missing No inventory taken or something?RIP to the dead SlavaUkraini: |

FutureFocus:LOL...on top of that you will go to hospital. Family medical history...if your family has a history of a genetic disease that manifests at certain age, no matter what you do, you will end up in hospital. Sam Okwaraji was as fit as anyone, yet he died from a heart disease that was genetic. Same thing with Nwankwo Kanu..had a genetic heart problem that was fixed on time, despite his fitness. Yes he had to go to hospital to get it fixed. Also, you can live a healthy life, you can run , you can exercise, and still have things like stress fracture, muscle tears, even dehydration and hypoglycemia...hospital. Cancer risk can be reduced by being fit...but note I said..reduced, not eliminated.People have been as fit and have done all the avoidables, and one random mutation...cancer. Stroke...you can be fit, like one former Olympic gold medalist, who kept fit after he retired, AND STILL HAD A STROKE...at the age of fifty. (And he was not amused at being told that his recovery would be quicker because he was fit...his being fit was supposed to have prevented the stroke in the first place!) |

VaginaAcademic:Scrub nurses can't use a phone in the operating theater. It's not very possible. A scrub nurse is in the 'sterile zone' of the theater. Anyone using a phone there is asking for trobule, including a large medical malpractice suit. Any scrub nurse bringing her or his phone into the theater is asking for a dressing down from the theater matron. |

Greattha:Yes, and it happens all over the world. America and the UK, to use two examples, have hundreds of incidents yearly. Those are the ones that are reported. Stress among other things have been implicated as a cause. As stated via AI summary Surgeons leave objects in patients due to human error, communication failures, and systemic issues, often triggered by emergency surgeries, high patient body mass index (BMI), unexpected procedural changes, fatigue, and staff turnover, leading to faulty sponge/instrument counts and missed final checks,See this article from the NEJM here. |

I have been hearing this thing for ages and thought it was just one of those beer parlor discussions. Why would a doctor forget scissors inside someone after operation? It's difficult for me to believe. Even me as an electrician I have never forgotten my pliers inside manhole after working. |
| Re: Woman Dies Four Months After Doctors Left Scissors Inside Her During Surgery by Joshthefirst(m): 8:54am On Jan 14 |
I made a mistake during the poll at the beginning Its a grave mistake by the doctors, and they should be punished, but maybe also given a chance for rehabilitation to contribute to healthcare in the future? It is a dicey issue though and I cannot give a particular answer |
| Re: Woman Dies Four Months After Doctors Left Scissors Inside Her During Surgery by lakefist(m): 8:54am On Jan 14 |
oz4real83:Everything doesn't fall on doctors alone. There should be a surgical team consisting of Surgeons, Anaesthetic doctors, scrub nurses, theatre support staff, etc. They all work together to ensure safe surgical sessions. What is the job of scrub nurse and circulating staff? A scrub nurse or Operating Room nurse hands over tools to surgeons and should account for every tool handed out. It is a team effort not just doctors. |

nairalandpost=138128485:That's true And I know that (in my family, I have a Surgeon and multiple Consultants and Specialists from different fields, a Christmas party in my house is like going to LUTH). At some point, they were lecturers and even said some of Nigeria's top medical schools should lose accreditation to teach Surgery. (We're really in trouble here, I had to tell a young Dr he used nylon stitches and he was arguing with me that I didn't know what I was saying, until we checked. He didn't know what nylon stitches looked like compared to dissolvable stitches). However, medical dramas show the nitty gritty well. "Heroes on Call", the actors got suturing right. "Resident Playbook" is where you see the OR system in place. "The Pitt" is so realistic, Doctors are impressed enough to tell med students to watch it. "House" was hilarious because I had 2 relatives that was exactly like him and all his students used to swear for him😭😂 Nigerian people don't like stress so when Conso is grilling you, they take it badly and think he's evil instead on making sure they're well trained Drs. I even knew patients who didn't like another relative. For laymen and med staff, definitely watch them. Medical Accidents happen everywhere but there is a basic system in place and consequences. In Nigeria, I don't even know the process to have someone struck off the Medical Council. There should even be a database of registered Doctors and Nurses that we can all check. And why on earth would I watch a show about an Autistic Dr, it was so unrealistic. ![]() |

This is really sad in a society where merits is not considered again in giving admission for medicine and surgery rather connections where a child would score above 300 in jamb and not given admission. My condolences to the family but justice must be served. May God direct us to do the right thing |

nairalanda1:A child was born in one big hospital , upon seeing the family name , Doctor said there is a hole in the heart of this child and will not live more than 6months , they want to turn the family to cash cow, a big prominent family The father just laughed and not allowed any operation, it’s over 5years and the child is super healthy till date , Beware of Google doctors, I always use my sense when auto mechanic tell me something, you can’t just tell me you want to change you car brainbox for no reason, why not check the fuse box first, trace wires to check it there is bridging first , you must know what you are doing, so many times I’ve told Automobiles mechanic to stop and couple it back if i sense you don’t know what you are doing, you can’t gamble with human life or health because you are a careless doctor, it’s unprofessional You want to see the medical report of the child, evidence full ground |

Countersam:"After every operation" you said. This error was made by the surgeon DURING the surgery so don't bring in the nurses here. So, if the nurses take stock AFTER the surgery and discovered that a scissors was missing and it was then found to have been left inside the patient, does that absolve the doctors of negligence? |

The word investigation was used r times and probe once . But las las we will never hear about this atrocity again. Like we are waiting for the probe of who gave the soldiers order to leave the girls school 30 minutes before the terrorist kidnappers came visiting |
| Re: Woman Dies Four Months After Doctors Left Scissors Inside Her During Surgery by Jman06(m): 9:52am On Jan 14 |
thesicilian:Nobody is biased against the doctors. People are only expressing their frustration with the healthcare system in the country. These doctors compromise standards all the time and do just as they please in our hospitals! They truly need to checkmated by ensuring they don't go scot-free after committing medical negligence like this. Since the government has refused to do the right thing by taking away leadership of our hospitals away from the medical doctors and ensuring that only qualified and neutral healthcare administrators run our hospitals, medical negligence will continue to be the order of the day. This is because the medical doctor leaders of these hospitals will do everything to protect erring doctors because they all belong to the same association (NMA). That is why they frustrate patients who want to seek justice in courts after suffering medical negligence in hospitals. |
| Re: Woman Dies Four Months After Doctors Left Scissors Inside Her During Surgery by Greattha: 10:01am On Jan 14 |
I agree with the reasons for this happening however, the issue isn’t about wether it happens all around the world ...that shouldn't justify the situation. That a response is AI generated doesn't mean it's accurate or foolproof...AI responses also include data from developing countries and wrong sources. Why didn't they run a scan immediately the patient returned with complaints? That's standard procedure especially for situations like that...if they'd done the needful on time, that death could've been avoided. She kept coming with complaints and they kept giving her pain meds. Mind you, if this happened in the States or the UK like your example, that hospital would be sued into oblivion. nairalanda1: |
