I think this is a sound business decision. Historical volatility of the Naira must be the culprit
Not really. One of the nastiest fallouts from Buharis policies was the end of dollar based purchases on Naira Cards. I think it finally ended in 2022 or so. This was lifted sometime last year and I have been making purchases again, at a much higher cost cry

Not sure I have tried to use PayPal, as other channels are working just fine.

All countries have always lobbied.

Nigeria has always lobbied, including State governments. https://guardian.ng/news/five-nigerians-entities-that-are-in-bed-with-american-lobbyists/

Also, dig and read up on the lobbying Nigeria did between 2016 to 2022 which saw arguably the most meteoric rise of tech startup in the shortest period. From hundreds of millions of VC funds from Silicon Valley to I-DICE to more. Check out the number of meetings VP Osinbajo had which eventually brought about the aforementioned.

If you think Paypal investing in Flutterwave in 2021 and partnering with it to allow us do the cross-border transactions we do today was some random event which wasn't due inter-country facilitation despite our reputation then I have nothing to add.

Myanmar which has the same fraud-prone reputation we have is still suffering the consequence while we are enjoying the cross-payment advantage despite our corruption and fraud index still being low as at last year.

Main thing i dislike about NL:

Poster > Makes a claim

Us < Do you have evidence for the claim?

Poster > Sure! Here’s a 7 million character essay.

Us < Superb writing skills! But my plate is still empty boss

If you have no evidence of lobbying being the reason Paypal opened up their services to the country, state your opinion as what it is—an opinion.

PayPal probably realized they made a mistake banning us from making transactions with their platform, not because of any lobbying, but because they're seeing the numbers West-Africans are bringing on other platforms that facilitate inter-continental payments.

Back in the day, they wouldn't allow you open an account, most times using them to receive payment for your services was a gamble with almost 70% lose rate. The money would be locked/seized for fimsy reasons.

Gladly, other platforms came, and we pivoted and they're seeing the numbers those platforms are pulling, hence they decided to open up their services now, but I don't expect any reasonable West-African, especially someone that PayPal frustrated back then, to leave the platforms that saved him/her, for PayPal. Fvck PayPal.

Nobody is more misogynist than 65-70+ women.
No wonder they were able to last 40+ years in marriage. The kind of things they tolerated(and still tolerate), most educated and exposed females of these days won't tolerate such nonsense.
Religion & individual laziness are the only things holding most back from being able to rebel.

This was Minister Bosun Tijani one ago talking about more collaboration in the FinTech sector with the US. Essentially about digital economy.

https://www.linkedin.com/posts/dr-%E2%80%98bosun-tijani-1b027b_i-was-pleased-to-join-us-secretary-of-state-activity-7155998840209248256-x46m

On X, he answers questions on these issues about platform limitations.

You can either argue from a place of following up actual issues or seek 'haha' moments forgotten fleetingly.

Time ana again, I have been proven to be right on these issues.

It's not the first time I have been alone on an issue only to quote it, months later with "I told you so". Happened too many times already.

But, go ahead.

I don't blame Trump, but it's starting to look like a racket.

How come the US wants to listen to a lobbyist?

I mean, these are people who have dragged this country on air for weeks. Suddenly, there's an arrangement to pay a lobbyist who is also known to be backing the very same people dragging Nigeria?

Whether na dem bully us to go price lobbyist, or na we go phoooolishly price am, someone is going to chop free $9m.
Actually that's how things are done over there in Washington since the 19th century. And there's a legal system created for that which makes it completely legal. The FG now understands they have to do the necessary if they're going effectively partner with the US concerning this matter.

I blame Reno Omokri for trying to do it on the cheap and recruiting Mike Arnold which caused more harm than good. Now we have to throw $$$ at it.
Reno is a rabble rouser.

DissTroy:
They either have selective amnesia or barely informed about American intrapolitics and global sociopolitics.

Lobbyists are big money machines. The UAE, Saudi, Japan, China, Iran, Israel...have been spending billions accumulatively on lobbying.

They should learn about AIPAC and other such foreign interest groups.

If you don't have a lobbying machinery on the world stage, you become the most tossed around pawn.

$9 million is little compared to the lobbying warchest of other countries annually.

Definitely TDS since it's been going on for 120+ years before Trump's father was even born.
Well said.

What I find funny is the black people who worship trump and musk. Those same trump and musk call you subhumans. If musk had the power to kill all black people, he would do it in an instant, and you, his gullible black followers, won't be spared.

Saying the truth is not hate, musk is the one with the hate. He hates you, he hates everybody who has the same skin colour as you.
Denouncing a person who wants you to die is not the same as wishing someone to die.
The way you guys have chosen to worship your hangman from overseas amazes me.

whining like toddlers everywhere, this one hates me that one hates me. Na only you? You hate some people like some people, Why is the onus of liking on them.

If the US does indeed move on Iran,(seems preparations are underway), they better have a solid plan, framework, succession strategy to deal with or at least, contain the fallout...

If the plan is Reza Pahlavi(this one go pass figurehead grin), it should be a temporary plan... Transitional government phase giving way to a proper democracy...

When they tell me their stories, I always feel shocked, terrified, and doubtful of how someone can tolerate such a life. It's always a tale of how brutal some things controlling societal stability are.

Such women then try to pass down such ideas to their now exposed and educated daughters, which creates certain animosity in some. You as a daughter will be getten beaten on a steady basis, and your mother will advise you to remain there, even when death is obviously sniffing, she'll warn you not to leave.
Also, those women go about, making it their lifetime job to shame and mock any woman that leaves her marriage, the most important thing here, -however is that they don't care about the reason you did it, even if you're on the brink of death; accept it. Marriage is the ultimate to them.

Patriarchy, since times of old, and now, cannot really succeed or move ahead without consent of women, the kind of women I just spoke about.; to be more precise; women aged 65-70+.

These days when I hear women complaining of patriarchy I just laugh it off. Just like when I hear men complaining of women lamenting about women billing them too much. Because they created those problems die themselves. They want & don't want them at the same time, a level of hypocrisy and lack of self respect that is very irregular in a supposed modern age.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE 7.5% VAT ON TRANSFERS: STOP PANICKING!

If you’ve seen the news that a 7.5% VAT on mobile transfers and USSD transactions starts on January 19th, you might be worried that the government is about to "eat" your money.

The headlines are scaring people, but the math shouldn't. A lot of people are misinterpreting this directive. Let’s break it down simply so you can see the actual impact.

1. The Big Misconception
Many people think that if they send ₦100,000, the government will take 7.5% of that amount (which would be ₦7,500).
THIS IS 100% FALSE.

2. The Reality
The 7.5% VAT is NOT charged on the money you are sending (the principal). It is charged ONLY on the SERVICE FEE your bank or fintech (Moniepoint, OPay, Kuda, etc.) charges you.

3. Let’s Look At The Math
If you send ₦100,000 today:
• The Principal: ₦100,000 (Your money)
• The Bank Fee: ₦50.00 (What the bank charges for the service)
• The 7.5% VAT: ₦3.75 (This is the charge, 7.5% of the ₦50 fee)
• EMTL (Stamp Duty): ₦50.00 (The standard flat levy)
• TOTAL COST TO YOU: ₦100,103.75

4. What about USSD?
If you use a code like *737# or *919# and the session fee is ₦20:
• The 7.5% VAT on that fee is ₦1.50.
• Your total cost becomes ₦21.50.
It is a kobo-difference, not a life-changing amount.

5. Why Is This Happening? 🤔
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) is simply ensuring that all digital services are fiscalized. Just like you pay VAT on a bottle of drink or a data plan, you are now paying VAT on the service of digital banking.

The Bottom Line:
Your savings are safe. Your capital isn't being slashed. This is a tax on the bank's commission, not your hard-earned wealth.

Don’t let misinformation cause unnecessary stress. There is a huge difference between a Tax on your Money and a Tax on a Service Fee.
