AFCON 2025: A Night Nigerians Will Remember For A Long Time by Estello(op): 4:34pm On Jan 16
The Super Eagles’ bid for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title ended on Wednesday night in Rabat, as Nigeria lost 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco after 120 goalless minutes in the semi-final.

It was a night of quiet disappointment rather than chaos. Nigeria defended with discipline and resilience but lacked cutting edge in attack, a familiar problem that returned at the worst possible moment.

Earlier in the day, Senegal booked their place in the final with a 1–0 victory over Egypt in Tangier, thanks to a 77th-minute goal from Sadio Mané.

Control Without Conviction

The semi-final was tight and tactical. Morocco had more possession and territory, while Nigeria stayed compact and organised. Clear chances were limited on both sides, and penalties always felt likely.

Nigeria managed just one shot on target across 120 minutes and did not earn a corner until extra time. The front three of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams were largely contained, with little service coming from midfield.

Defensively, Calvin Bassey was outstanding, producing multiple clearances and blocks. However, a controversial yellow card means he will miss the third-place playoff. The absence of Wilfred Ndidi was also felt, with Nigeria struggling at times to manage transitions in midfield.

Another Familiar Ending
This defeat adds to a worrying recent pattern for Nigeria: AFCON 2023: Lost the final to hosts Ivory Coast. World Cup playoff: Lost on penalties. AFCON 2025: Lost the semi-final on penalties to hosts Morocco. Effort has not been the issue. Execution in tight moments has.

The night I will never forget was 22/06/2010 at the world cup in South Africa when Yakubu Aiyegbeni 'Yakubu' the ball in the 66th minute, missing a clear goal scoring opportunity against South Korea and costing us a place in the round of 16.

Any time I watched the replay, I thought he would score the goal.. Oh, what deep trauma this post has unearthed in me cry

Not his fault, no VAR as at that time. Kanu missed as well. He didn't score in that tournament. Infact no goal in 6 afcons

I remember that day, it was so gloomy in Lagos sad

Victor ikepa's penalty that rattled off the top of the bar sent shockwaves throughout the stadium and those watching.

As least we saw effort in his attempt, not like chukwueze who passed to the morracan goalie.

It's very sad when hosts lose in a final.

I knew Ndidi absence will be felt. Man is irreplaceable in the defensive midfield.
The outcome is even more predictable because we rarely knock out any host team at that stage of the tournament.

The days when fowards were in the frontline of taking Pk

I rewatched 94 afcon pk shoot out against civ in semi final... Ben iroha was the only defender as part of the kickers. They were all attackers - finidi, siasia, amokachi & yekini

Todays fwd players for Nig are afraid of pks

I swear, I almost died from tear gas when Naija fans scattered the stadium and tear gas was thrown to disperse crowd.
.
Where got me emotional was when outside the stadium, a babe been held by her boyfriend was crying and lamenting why Cameroun all the time.
That was the 3rd time we lost a final to Cameroun

Now I know we don't deserve to be at the world cup. Against a much tactically organize team That were willing do the press Structurally We just had no answer. Could not play out from the back. No wing play enough to bring out cross. Our target man was more or less a box man. Can't drop deep to pick up possession and run with it. It was just a repetitive long balls from the defense to the attackers hoping something drops luckily. Against an even more organized Europeans that press in unison. We stand zero chance of even coming out from our half. We lack a really technical holding midfielder. Iwobi de try. But he is not a natural 10. Against average team he will strive. But against natural central attacking midfielders., he will struggle to find his bearing as well as indidi Who has pass his prime. The best they can pull off is what they have. Against distinctively average teams. They not good enough against well drilled side.

The Eagles tried their best, it is not easy trashing a team playing on their own soil, especially semi final match.

I blame the coach for starting defenders and wide men in the penalty when he actually has midfielders and better CBs for those penalties
