9ja has lost more AFCON finals than any other team.
3x against Cameroon, 1x each against Algeria and Ivory Coast.

As per the 2000 finals, my cousin has a scar on his hand caused by a ceiling fan during celebrstion when JJ scored that equaliser, helas Cameroon was too strong for Nigeria, Etoo and Mboma were on fire then and Ike Shorunmu was a mess that day.
Cameroon won consecutive AFCON and retained the old trophy.
Don't only blame Ikpeba, Kanu missed his own penalty before Ikpeba.
You cant blame Onyemechi without talking about Chukwueze.

judewrites:
I remember that day, it was so gloomy in Lagos sad

Victor ikepa's penalty that rattled off the top of the bar sent shockwaves throughout the stadium and those watching.

As least we saw effort in his attempt, not like chukwueze who passed to the morracan goalie.

It's very sad when hosts lose in a final.

The days when fowards were in the frontline of taking Pk

I rewatched 94 afcon pk shoot out against civ in semi final... Ben iroha was the only defender as part of the kickers. They were all attackers - finidi, siasia, amokachi & yekini

Todays fwd players for Nig are afraid of pks
At least offensive midfielders and attackers should be taking penalties.

Eric schelle hasn't drilled the SE sufficiently on penalties .

It was a day of pain, but the pain wasn't up to what many Nigerians felt on the day Congo ended our world cup dreams. That the day I decided not to be expecting much from the super Eagles. All the presents strikers and forward players in that team needs to be quietly retired, including Oshimen. Hopes the future holds the best for them

Super Eagles did their best.

Morocco didn't have any breathing space because we suffocated them for 120 minutes, it's too bad we weren't that good in penalties. next time we will do better.

Now I know we don't deserve to be at the world cup. Against a much tactically organize team That were willing do the press Structurally We just had no answer. Could not play out from the back. No wing play enough to bring out cross. Our target man was more or less a box man. Can't drop deep to pick up possession and run with it. It was just a repetitive long balls from the defense to the attackers hoping something drops luckily. Against an even more organized Europeans that press in unison. We stand zero chance of even coming out from our half. We lack a really technical holding midfielder. Iwobi de try. But he is not a natural 10. Against average team he will strive. But against natural central attacking midfielders., he will struggle to find his bearing as well as indidi Who has pass his prime. The best they can pull off is what they have. Against distinctively average teams. They not good enough against well drilled side.
Right from the blast of the whistle...we were off and never got into rhythm.

Never strung five passes together and opted for long balls to the strikers instead of trying to build play from the back.

Ajayis loosing the ball twice from wrong passes in quick succession and Onyedikas being robbed of the ball like four times in a row and Iwobi being shoved off the ball made our center backs very reluctant to pass to each other.

It was as if they did not trust themselves to pass accurately nor the midfielders to hold accurately .

But the major cause was Akor Adams who had the most possession of the ball but did not successfully complete any dribble, or pass and also could not press in front or mark the free man when we were at the back.

The team simply did not click throughout the match but in spite of that they were trying hard. Thier morale and will was dampened by the blatantly biased officiating from the Ghanian referee.

The referee was giving fouls against Nigeria for any slight contact with the Moroccans and refused to blow obvious fouls by the Moroccans.

Na wetin yoruba dey call " opon gbe won mi". The game was just bigger than them.

The eagles needed a real natural pure dribbler of the ball in the mould of Okocha to go past defenders and shoot at goal.

Estello:
The Super Eagles’ bid for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title ended on Wednesday night in Rabat, as Nigeria lost 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco after 120 goalless minutes in the semi-final.

It was a night of quiet disappointment rather than chaos. Nigeria defended with discipline and resilience but lacked cutting edge in attack, a familiar problem that returned at the worst possible moment.

Earlier in the day, Senegal booked their place in the final with a 1–0 victory over Egypt in Tangier, thanks to a 77th-minute goal from Sadio Mané.

Control Without Conviction

The semi-final was tight and tactical. Morocco had more possession and territory, while Nigeria stayed compact and organised. Clear chances were limited on both sides, and penalties always felt likely.

Nigeria managed just one shot on target across 120 minutes and did not earn a corner until extra time. The front three of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams were largely contained, with little service coming from midfield.

Defensively, Calvin Bassey was outstanding, producing multiple clearances and blocks. However, a controversial yellow card means he will miss the third-place playoff. The absence of Wilfred Ndidi was also felt, with Nigeria struggling at times to manage transitions in midfield.

Another Familiar Ending
This defeat adds to a worrying recent pattern for Nigeria: AFCON 2023: Lost the final to hosts Ivory Coast. World Cup playoff: Lost on penalties. AFCON 2025: Lost the semi-final on penalties to hosts Morocco. Effort has not been the issue. Execution in tight moments has.

Nigeria will face Egypt in the third-place playoff, while Senegal and Morocco meet in Sunday’s final. Pride, ranking points, and a proper close to the campaign are now at stake. Catch it live on SuperSport on DStv and GOtv.

For fans who followed the tournament closely, the disappointment is heavy, but support for the Super Eagles remains.
This campaign did not end in celebration. It ended in reflection.
Who told you? Nigerians moved on immediately. Did you see anyone crying on the streets the following day?

I blame the coach for starting defenders and wide men in the penalty when he actually has midfielders and better CBs for those penalties
Paul Onuachu who took the first Pk was a striker and not a wide man.
Midfielders you said?
Who and where were they?
Frank Onyeka and Raph Onyedika were out.
It was remaining only Iwobi who is not a good PK taker.
Then which CB?
Bassey who played the PK thousands of miles above the crossbar against DR Congo didn't believe in himself to play this one and wasn't even willing to play the Morocco's own.
The two strikers,Akor Adams and Victor Osimhen were afraid to play the PK and so were out in the dying minute of the ET.
So, the coach was left with no options than to use the flank men and LB to play the PK.
And so, don't blame him.
