A burial ceremony in Awgbu town, Anambra State, was disrupted on January 13, 2026, following the dramatic intervention of a traditional masquerade identified as Agaba.

The incident occurred during the burial rites of the Igwe of Awgbu, when the Agaba masquerade entered the venue and proceeded directly to the stage where a guest artist, Onowu Ugonabo, was performing.

According to eyewitness accounts, several announcements were reportedly made urging the artist to stop his performance as the masquerade approached. However, the artist allegedly continued performing, prompting the masquerade to confront him on stage.

In Igbo tradition, the arrival of a revered masquerade—often regarded as a spiritual embodiment of ancestral authority—requires that all other musical performances cease immediately as a sign of respect. The confrontation is believed to have stemmed from the artist’s failure to observe this long-standing cultural practice.

Videos circulating widely on social media show the masquerade mounting the stage amid the performance, drawing reactions from attendees and viewers online.

The incident has since generated widespread discussion on social media, with many debating the growing tension between modern entertainment practices and traditional customs, particularly at culturally sensitive events such as royal burials.

The musician was calm. Masquerade wey him suppose give correct upper-cut. Self-defence. The masquerade attacked him first for no reason.

This is what makes every occasion like this interesting and breathtaking, it's all part of the art and culture. This is the type of cultural practices that can attract foreigners to Nigeria, not copying their own western culture. We can copy them in technology, science, innovation but then we will still uphold and celebrate our culture and tradition as a people to keep us closer to our roots wink

Sounds and sights of the East, proudly Igbo cool kiss

For those that don't know the tradition in Igbo land, when a king dies, masquerade of the community or kingdom will perform their cultural displays as a way of paying last respect to the king. Trying to stop or replace such cultural displays with westernized music will definitely be met with resistance by the upholders of culture and tradition, in this case the masquerade and it's youthful entourage.

Before you come here to say anything negative, remember when Queen Elizabeth died, they performed a lot of traditional rites which looked like what you are seeing in this video. Even when King Charles was coronated, they performed a lot of cultural rites.

Culture is people's way of life and every group of people on earth have their unique culture and traditions, and so long as such does not lead to loss of lives and human deaths, there is nothing wrong with it.

Masquerades can be very annoying. The ones here too if thy approach me, what catches my attention first is their horrible mouth and body odour. I wonder how the aroma will be at “that place”.

Back to the issue… Why the attack? Maybe there is more to this but money will most likely be the cause of it

This is small compared to what the Oro and Eyo do at the waste side.
But the musician was wrong. He knows the tradition of the land but chose to be disobedient.

The same people that idolize Chicago drug barons are the ones still supporting the musician.

Your you have brain ache?

Or you cannot see that it was the artist who was actually wrong?

The whites you try to copy respect their culture, America most of you try to copy has no culture. Go to Scandinavia and see them respect their Viking ways till date.
It's only Africans that think like you do.

The artist was told to stop performance he didn't listen....

Brain dey pain some of una

Why are masquerades in Nigeria always violent, want to be flogging and intimidating people... masquerades should be a thing of fun, entertainment and joyful thing for one to watch not intimidating and causing chaos and problems in the area they are doing their activities
