Sampling Fela Doesn’t Make You Fela – Seun Kuti Warns Afrobeats Artistes by phosky(op): 8:17am On Jan 17
Grammy-nominated singer and activist Seun Kuti has cautioned Afrobeats artistes against likening themselves to his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary pioneer of Afrobeat music. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Seun expressed displeasure over a growing trend in the Nigerian music industry where some Afrobeats musicians describe themselves as the “new Fela” simply because they sample his father’s songs or draw inspiration from his sound.

While clarifying that he has no objection to artistes sampling Fela’s music, Seun stressed that such creative choices do not place anyone on the same pedestal as the Afrobeat icon.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, Seun Kuti criticised what he described as misguided comparisons between contemporary Afrobeats stars and his father.

“A few people have done good samples of Fela’s music. But the only critique that I have is that sampling Fela doesn’t make you Fela,” he said.

“People should stop saying that they are my dad. That is crazy. It’s crazy when people say they are the ‘new Fela.’ Where is the ‘new Bob Marley’? It’s only in Nigeria you hear such things. We do wild stuff here. People are wild.”

According to Seun, Fela’s legacy goes far beyond music, noting that his father was a cultural revolutionary, political activist, and fearless critic of injustice, whose impact cannot be

Over the years, several Afrobeats stars, including Wizkid and Burna Boy, have been compared to Fela due to their frequent use of Afrobeat samples and socially conscious themes.

Street-hop artistes such as Bella Shmurda and Portable have also publicly referred to themselves as the “new Fela,” further fuelling debates around legacy, originality, and cultural responsibility.

The conversation gained renewed attention late last year after rapper Olamide described Wizkid as “the greatest Afrobeats artiste after Fela,” a statement that sparked mixed reactions across social media.

Seun Kuti’s remarks have reignited discussions on the importance of respecting musical history and cultural context, while encouraging artistes to build their own identities rather than adopting comparisons tied to legendary figures.

Seun, what's your own legacy that you have stopped living about your late father's legacies?

All that weed he’s smoking is giving him psychosis. He’s been talking to himself for over a week now. The only people living in Fela’s legacy are his family members. If he was a world class coder, he wouldn’t face Afrobeat nor care about its legacy. He’s scared that newcomers want to take the spotlight.

He isn't wrong, not all this modern artistes have the mind of Fela, most of them are only here to pack the money and go home.

The closest sample of Fela still remain Falz's Moral Instruction tape, heavily and beautifully sampled.

Stop trending on your papa glory seun kuti. Only failures do so. Write your own story.

Afterall Fela himself copied the likes of James brown and Tony Allen's styles and fused it into his afrobeat genre. Nobody has the monopoly of music and styles. Go and listen to fela's beats and watch his dance steps, then match it with James Brown's crazy down steps on stage, they're quite similar. Michael Jackson copied James Brown's dance steps verbatim and added it to his.

If the likes of whizzy do the same, they're not going to be forst and last. How many royalties did fela pay to brown and allen?

This boy is too envious.
Afro beats did not start from fela and it will not end on fela, it should be the joy of kuti family that Africans are taking the genre of music further and better than where fela left it

He has the right to defend his father's legacy. Stop displaying stu... pi.. -dity Upandan Nairaland. For a rogue like portable to be calling himself "New Fela" is it not an insult on his father?

You guys just jump on people's opinion without proper reasoning.
Fela was a fighter.

Who among these guys can face several governments including the military squarely and criticise them like fela did. He was jailed many times, brutalised many times and he still continued till his last breath.

Just a public warning was what sent Idris Abdukareem to exile in Ghana. Just an open warning by Obasanjo.

Fela's legacy is beyond music.

Next time reason wella before posting.

If he/she is not Fela, then it isn't Fela; be it Dede, Lagbaja, Femi, Wizkid or even seun himself. All of you are not Fela and there can never be another Fela. Make una stop using Fela to shine. Everyone should create his own legacy, including Fela's children.

He is right, Bob Marley's children are doing well today because they protected their father's intellectual property just as Michael Jackson's family are still benefitting from his work.

Ojuelegba which is a sample of Fela's song is is Wizkid's biggest hit yet his fans thinks he is bigger than Fela was, that's an insult to Abamieda.

I was going to ask same. Dude doesn't even have any song of his own. All he says is my father this, my father that, my father etc.

What about you yourself Seun Kuti? Aren't you a father too? Do you want your kids growing up screaming "our grandfather" because you their father refused to blow? Your brother Femi Kuti is a legend already. Be one too.

That's what I'm thinking. It seems like he's ok with anybody sampling Fela's music ...but upset that they are comparing themselves to Fela. Is that what is really what is meant by the "new Fela"? .. imitating Fela? ....or being the "new activist" like Fela was?
