He was threatening military actions until Europe started moving their troops to Greenland and he had to switch to tarrif. He knows congress will never approve a war with Europe.

taking greenland is not the issue
but dealing with the consequences

at a bare minimum, denmark will leave NATO
will they take all of scandinavia with them?
especially since sweden and finland only joined NATO after the SMO in ukraine
if all of scandinavia leaves nato, their eternal plan to balkanize russia is dealt a heavy blow in the near to medium term

that is to say nothing of how the abrupt divorce will play into french wet dreams of co-leading a european army
as well as the avalanche of unintended consequences that they simply cannot predict

that is actually what the tariff sh*t is about
it is about bullying the danes to accept the theft and not raise a stink about it
their economies are intricately tied to the western system so they'll sink into a depression if the us goes to town on their economies
