Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the leadership of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, saying traditional rulers must adapt to the realities of modern governance and work together for unity and development rather than seeking supremacy.

Ajayi, in a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Saturday night, emphasised that the era of empires and territorial dominance among Yoruba monarchies had long passed even as he cited the non-existent dominance of colonialists over their former colonies.

“We are no longer in the era of Oyo Empire. Rome and the United Kingdom that once ruled more than half of the world as empires can no longer claim sovereignty over their former colonies. Times have changed. We are now in a new world,” he wrote.

He further noted that the historical Oyo Empire belongs to the past and that the totality of Yorubaland was never entirely under the rule of the Alaafin of Oyo.

“Oyo Empire now belongs to history, and the whole of what we now know as Yorubaland was never under the rule of the Alaafin. The society will function well if the current natural rulers in Yorubaland understand their roles in modern society,” Ajayi counselled.

The presidential aide urged Yoruba traditional rulers to focus on collaboration rather than rivalry, stressing that their collective effort was key to preserving peace and promoting development.

“Our kings should now work collaboratively to preserve peace, unity, and development in their communities whilst preserving our cultural values,” he advised.

LEADERSHIP reports that Governor Seyi Makinde had on Thursday inaugurated the new Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, appointing the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the pioneer chairman for a two-year term under a rotational system among Alaafin, Olubadan and Soun of Ogbomosoland.

The governor stated that he reached the decision after consulting the Alaafin of Oyo, Olubadan of Ibadanland, and Soun of Ogbomoso, adding that all three monarchs endorsed the arrangement to rotate the council’s leadership among them.

However, the Alaafin of Oyo, who was absent during the inauguration, later issued a statement denying that he was consulted or that he consented to the rotation of the council’s chairmanship, sparking tension on the implication of the confrontational approach of Alaafin to the Oyo State Government.

Re: Obas Council: ‘We Are No More In Oyo Empire’, Tinubu’s Aide Tells Alaafin by omowolewa:
No need disrespecting say of the Obas

Why not appoint a Director General for the Obas while the all rule their Kingdoms without stress

For United Nations, we have Secretary General. O'DUA groups adopted DG.

So why not appoint a DG so the Obas can concentrate on Culture and Divinities. Rather than a arrangement that makes Politics dwarf and contempt the Culture.

reddingtonblack:
So it is not enough politician/govt are now the ones imposing Kings for yorubaland

They should add DG on top the Kings will be answering .. so Agreement is Agreement will ensue so we can kuku finish culture pata pata DG for obas ..over education dey worry people
Not what you think, DG would do the administrative work while the Obas focus on their Kingdom and Chiefdoms.

When it comes to meetings, every Oba appears in their majesty not as a Chairman, who can tell you keep quiet and nothing will happen.

If a Chairman must be appointed, the they should head to court

Just change the name. It's the name that's sharking them. Especially those ones with big historical names. They feel attached to the name so maybe change it
Re: Obas Council: ‘We Are No More In Oyo Empire’, Tinubu’s Aide Tells Alaafin by Eraddray(m): 7:58pm On Jan 18
If the present alaafin has placed himself in the position of respect...and not quarrelling up and down... He won't have been in this mess... he's the one dragging the name of oyo empire on the ground...

We all knw the history... alaafin should come first in Yoruba land.. ooni is the custodian of all oosa in Yoruba land...

Instead of the present alaafin to earn people's respect, he was busy fighting for the respect...

It is very obvious there is division among the traditional rulers in Yoruba land than any other place in Nigeria the power quest and tusle is becoming unbecoming and if this thing is not checkmate these megalomaniac will burn down their town.

Tinubu’s aide should know better than to involve himself in this debacle as he will only end up costing his principal political capital. This whole saga has also confirmed what most of us already know, the Southwest is not as united as some people like to portray on here.

The guy is saying the truth though this may be hard to swallow . The era of kings and crown is gone . It's even worst ,shameful seeing them as a pown in the hand of our politician .
Re: Obas Council: ‘We Are No More In Oyo Empire’, Tinubu’s Aide Tells Alaafin by Nobody:
The Alaafin looks like my cousin, of which his youngest brother is a priest in Ogbomosho. Can you see the connection?

The very first day I met 9ice at the Hip Music Awards in January, 2008, he whispered he was a lighting (NEPA) technician (that same year my estate in Lagos with stable electricity began to suffer power outages and strange flooding unheard of before). At that Hip Music Awards, a strange rainfall fell that held me down, I was the last to leave the event.Tried to hire him he gave me no reception. Now visited me passingly while I was being roasted by seniors in 2008. The Mr Ajisebioyo-from-Ogbomosho is not a nice person at all.

Oyo Empire was long dead and forgotten.Needless I add my hometown was never a part of the so-called empire.

Your analogy is not true,

No division anywhere, they are only let new Alaafin of Oyo understand that he can not just come back home to become king and claim supremacy base on history without have any contribution to development of Yorubaland either before he asend throne or after. No connection with stake holders, he don't pay homage for elders, just assumed to be head of Yoruba base on history he read, forget that those history is someone's effort and contribution that earn them the prestige

What talk is this? I guess Tinubu wants to lose Oyo State. I should have thought it was best for him to leave Alaafin and Makinde do their battle and not weigh in on either side and wait to be consulted in seeking a resolution of same. Anyway,, what do I know!💁
