AFCON Final Nearly Collapsed — What Really Happened? by Dantesi(op): 2:06pm On Jan 19
I know some people will say this is an exaggeration, but let’s stop pretending. Except you're biased too

That AFCON final was seconds away from going out of control. Not because of the football — but because of what happened around it.

First, the refereeing became confusing, then players lost trust in decisions, especially when he denied Senegal a goal and awarded Morocco a penalty at the other end in the dying minutes of the match. Adding to the numerous questionable calls Morocco had received in their favour throughout the tournament.

Then we saw something we rarely see in a final....Players walking off the pitch. That alone tells you the situation had crossed a line.
And just when things seemed tense enough, reports of violent clashes in the stands started emerging. Fans fighting. Security overwhelmed. The atmosphere turned ugly fast.

This wasn’t just passion.
This was a breakdown.

This chaos was caused mainly by poor officiating, which led to emotions from both teams and fans that simply boiled over

Because one thing is clear — that final nearly collapsed, and African football deserves better. Morocco should host tournaments with the intention of not WINNING AT ALL COST. You can't beat a child and tell the child how to cry. From stealing goalkeepers towel in wet conditions to not selling enough tickets to opposing fans and lots of shenanigans.. I don't blame the Senegal players for walking out.

Was the officiating okay? Did Senegal overreact? Let’s talk.

It's part of the reasons the afcon isn't rated seriously...

Blame the VAR team.

That Senegal goal was a clean goal.
Go and watch the replay of the goal again.

A corner kick.
Seck ran towards the ball to head it
Hakimi MADE NO ATTEMPT TO GO FOR THE BALL, but instead raised his hands & pushed Seck to stop him.
Seck waved him aside & headed the ball.
...

Very clean goal.
Worse still, not even a VAR review. At least they should have called Ref's attention to review it.
I bet you, if it was Morocco that scored that goal, it would have stood.

As Senegal coach was still protesting the disallowed goal, a contentious penalty was awarded & all hell broke loose... grin
