The Many Hurdles Of Remote Workers In Nigeria by Hamachi(op): 8:02pm On Jan 20
There was this guy, Tunde, who spent years manifesting a remote job. Every morning he’d tweet, “Remote work will locate me,” like it was a lost wallet. He took courses, optimized his LinkedIn, and even practiced saying “You’re on mute” in front of the mirror.

Finally—boom!—he got a fully remote job with a foreign company. Dollar-paying. Slack access. Welcome email and everything. Tunde almost cried. Remote work had finally located him.

But remote work did not locate NEPA.

On his first day, five minutes into onboarding, NEPA struck. Generator came on sounding like a tractor fighting for its life. During stand-up meetings, his mic picked up the generator, his neighbor frying akara, and a rooster that clearly had opinions about Agile methodology.

Then came the internet. If rain thought about falling, his connection disappeared. He’d freeze on Zoom with his mouth open, looking like he was passionately arguing… while actually gone for three minutes.

To make matters worse, Tunde didn’t have a noise-cancelling headset. So one day, while the CEO was explaining quarterly goals, his mother shouted from the background: “TUNDE! HAVE YOU WASHED THE PLATE?!”
Silence on the call.
The CEO: “Uh… is everything okay over there?”

Tunde smiled confidently. “Yes, just… uh… local notifications.”

After several “local notifications,” missed deadlines caused by NEPA, and one unforgettable meeting where a generator drowned out the entire team, HR sent the email.

We love your enthusiasm, but we’re going in a different direction." Tunde lost the job—but gained wisdom.

Today, he has three things before applying for another remote role:

1. Stable internet
2. Backup power
3. Noise-cancelling headset

Because remote work is not just about skills.
It’s about surviving NEPA, network, and noise. 😭😂

The OP nailed it. The biggest hurdle isn't even the job itself; it is the infrastructure (Power and Internet) and the Payment Gateways (PayPal/receiving funds).

However, once you cross that bridge, the reward of earning in FX while spending in Naira is unmatched. It is the only hedge against the current inflation. For those struggling, don't quit. The initial setup is hard, but the financial freedom on the other side is real.

Paypal seems to be biggest hurdle for remote workers. Banning you for no good reason other than your a Nigerian.

With band A, light is no longer a problem, with 4G router, internet is no longer a problem.

A good number of employer now have ACH bank transfer as option unlike before that most only pay through PayPal, Transferwise/Payoneer.

It's crazy, since my laptop battery cast, been spending 22k a week on fuel. Making arrangements for a new one though. My friend's own lasts him about 6+hrs. Solar is anothe r thing to mitigate power issue too

Most remote jobs are jobs Americans don't want then they send it to either Indians or Nigerians. In fact most companies prefer Indians and the leftover jobs are given to Nigerians.

What you need most is one with the noise canceling Microphones, so that when you are on call and your kids are making noise , the mic won’t pick their voice , it will only pick yours

For instance , if you call MTN customer care, you will notice there is no noise at the other end, even though there are many people in that call center talking at ones like bees in the market place, noise canceling mic will eliminate those noise and remote companies only recommend Jabra and
Plantronic voyager , some companies even reject Bose and Sony , even though Bose has the best ANC in the world, Jabra has the best ANC MIC

I have many of them

Are you sure you are in Nigeria? 4G router, MTN?, airtel? you are on one chance with 4G when it comes to remote engagements. Op knows most common network now is still 4G.

I have to put my 5G phone about 10m away to where it can get quality 5G network in addition to the fact that I have locked it in on 5G only.
Re: The Many Hurdles Of Remote Workers In Nigeria by ibrocool(m):
This is actually the situation of remote job in this country. In fact, I am one of those facing the challenges. After managing to fix power supply with mini power station, and noise, I was unable to fix network. I have only one option for the network which is MTN, others don't work. When MTN starts to fumle, I just remain helpless. It cost me the chance of getting clients.

Some this are not there problem but to get remote job is the real deal
Re: The Many Hurdles Of Remote Workers In Nigeria by Babatundehy: 9:34pm On Jan 21
Any serious remote worker knows to make arrangements for electricity whenever needed, strategically secure apartment at a location that's almost always quiet, and also have every other equipment needed to make the job fluid.
Generator is a bad plan, it can disappoint you just when you need it, electricity from solar is what you need, all of this aside, the greatest problem of a Nigerian remote worker is being in Nigeria, count yourself lucky and know that you're among the top 1 percent in Nigeria and maybe Africa if you secure a remote job, an actual job not a gig.
i see most people mistake gigs for jobs, a gig person doesn't have a job, and while at it, save money, continue to apply for jobs and make sure to look into how you can make money doing what you can control to some extent (with the money you saved).
