Edo Man Regains Freedom After 60 Days In Kidnappers’ Den by lagostrendboy(op): 8:32am On Jan 22
An Edo State man, Segirus Were, who was abducted alongside his pregnant wife, Zainab, has regained his freedom after spending about 60 days in the custody of kidnappers. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Were was released by his captors on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, according to reports. A video currently circulating on social media shows him surrounded by individuals believed to be his relatives and friends, appearing relieved and in high spirits despite the traumatic experience.

In the footage, the victim drew attention to his appearance, saying:

“This my dress is white jalabia, is white colour, but it has turned black,”
an apparent reference to the harsh and unhygienic conditions he endured while in captivity.

Segirus Were was reportedly kidnapped on November 22, 2025, at Aviele community near Auchi, in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Following the abduction, the kidnappers released a distressing video showing Were and his pregnant wife pleading for help, while demanding a ₦50 million ransom for their release. Reports later indicated that the family was only able to raise about ₦7 million.

Zainab was subsequently released after a ransom was reportedly paid, while Were remained in captivity, sparking widespread concern and debate over his prolonged detention.

The case later took a controversial turn following allegations that activist Harrison Gwamnishu diverted ₦5.4 million from the ransom funds meant to secure Were’s release. Gwamnishu has consistently denied the allegation.

The disagreement between the family and the activist reportedly complicated negotiations with the kidnappers and prolonged Were’s stay in captivity, further fueling public outrage and social media debates.

As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding Were’s release.

The DSS and police should always go and discreetly debrief people who are released from captivity in a kidnapper's den. If they do this, it iwll not take them long to identify a pattern and possible description of the people and the likely places they use as hideouts.

By piecing all this information together, it will become esier to busrt these kidnappers and also have an idea of who work with them and how they operate.

someone has been in the bush for 60days and DSS or police can't locate him. Don't the wife give them information. The more we see this kidnapping case as a business to some people the better.. Either vdm or Harrison has hand in the kidnapping care, either of the two give those kidnappers information on where to go if the police are close. Vdm has even already put the man house up for sale without most of the man people knowing. Imagine.

First, it’s a huge relief that Segirus Were is alive and free after about 60 days in captivity. Anyone who’s spent even a night in unsafe conditions knows how brutal that can be—so hearing him point to his white jalabia turning black says a lot without him needing to explain further. That single line paints a very grim picture of what he endured.

Good for him. When will the government put an end to this menace though 🤔. It's even hard to visit our own country and villages because we fear ww might be targeted, how much more for foreigners who visit the country. We are not serious people.

Auchi in Edo State Has Become Extremely Notorious For Kidnapping Activities,
These Activities Are Not Without The Help of Indigene / Locals,
Re: Edo Man Regains Freedom After 60 Days In Kidnappers’ Den by dederocs(m): 9:20am On Jan 22
Okpebolo should stop this kidnapping, Edo people are a warrior tribe, don't let the people get angry. Employ 100,000 Edo youths, under the government, arm them and send them into the forests as forests guards, build bases and training ranges for them inside the forests.

Fill the forests with Edo state government actors, Edo indigenes, employ the youths to defend the empire state.

Only Edo blood, Edo indigenous people should be vigilantes, ESSN, and forests guards, and allowed to bear arms, no vigilante from a different tribe should enter Edo state with weapons!

I don't support those online activists or politicians, because they are all same, they dine and wine in secret, but fight and stwiped fans will be fighting and kpaing each other's in public..
