As a lawyer, I'd always advice my colleagues to ditch Lawfirms to In-house roles for better compensation and preservation of mental health. Some lawfirms are that TOXIC.

Except of course, you have a passion for litigation and you're aiming for the Bench or becoming a SAN.

What are the in house roles sir ? Many of us aren’t lawyers but just want to learn.

You are right,👍 OP.
It's just that they ( Lawyers) fight for All of Us,but the Public seems not to border because it's Only when the Public Finds themselves in an Inconvenience Situations they Remembered that Lawyers Needs Good Money.
Average Lawyers Pay in Nigeria, should nothing less than N300,000 per Month but is not so here.
So when you have CASES in the Courts, what the Public refused to pay in gentleman agreement, will surely come to be paid by extra- means- heavy Charges at the Lawyer Chambers.

Ordinary skit maker, who’s a drop out, is better than most lawyers.

Venturing into politics is another way to earn a living for any lawyer.

Assuming there is a structured property market in NIgeria and peoples purchasing powers are ok, more lawyers would have been earning well. I am not talking of 2-3 bedroom properties o. I am talking of big-time industrial and commercial properties.

I pity common man’s pikin wey dey study that course in recent years.

Law has lost its credibility 🥲
StrngT:
I want to share a simple perspective on what many young lawyers are silently dealing with in Lagos.

A lawyer earning ₦140,000 monthly and working in places like Ikeja while living around Ogudu will likely spend a good part of that salary before the month ends even take loan.

Transport alone can take about ₦45,000, especially for those who go to the office three days a week. Feeding at work and at home can easily take another ₦60,000–₦70,000.

When you put these together, more than ₦110,000 is already gone from a ₦140,000 salary, and this is before considering things like clothes, laundry, data, health needs, or unexpected issues.

In simple terms, what is left at the end of the month is usually around ₦20,000–₦25,000, and even that can disappear once something unplanned comes up.

Professional dressing is another pressure. A decent suit today costs around ₦200,000. For someone saving about ₦20k monthly, that means many months of saving just for one suit, assuming nothing else demands attention.

Yet, it is common knowledge that some law firms still pay between ₦80,000–₦100,000 monthly. At that level, basic expenses alone exceed the salary income, which means the lawyer is either depending on family support or cutting back on essentials.

This situation raises a simple question: how sustainable is this for the profession?

I also understand that many firms are under pressure from clients who delay payment or bargain legal fees down. At the same time, there are many young lawyers seeking experience, which makes it easier for firms to offer lower pay.

But we can't write off that when trained professionals consistently struggle to meet basic living needs, it affects morale, long-term commitment, and the overall quality of legal service.

This is not a discussion about anything else than to ask a sincere question whether current pay levels of Lagos lawyer realistically match the cost of living in Lagos.

I believe this is a conversation the profession needs to keep having, so that law practice can remain a respected career.

For lawyers in Lagos who were able to come out of this situation like a boss , what did you do differently? Because this is no longer funny at all.

Is there any profession not underpaid.in Nigeria? All the country's money has been stolen by the politicians and stashed abroad, leaving most Nigerians pauperised.
It has been like this in most professions. I trained as an accountant in a practice in the nineties. Our pay then was less than what the bank clerks were earning. Our managing partner then trained and qualified in England. He will remind us that we haven't seen snow and that we were supposed to pay for the experience that we were getting. Some left and took jobs lower than accountants in industries. We persevered.

I got a major job because of my experience and the profile of the practice and in three months I changed my accomodation, my dressing, savings and I could afford anything I wanted. In the professions if you want to launch out big then you must be ready to go through the pains of the early years. It's the same all over the world. Not a Tinubu Tinubu thing.

Simplicitas. In fact, many organisations require in-house solicitors with almost zilch litigation duties. Unless litigation is one's chosen niche, a decent career can be built in advisory, compliance and corporate commercial consultancy.
Yes. I knew Litigation was NEVER for me since my 100level days and thankfully, God has ordered my steps so far.

Advisory, compliance and corporate commercial consultancy are good areas of Law . You know ball. kiss

You should try to apply to big and popular law firms after you have gathered three years of legal experience at a low paying law firm.

The big and popular law firms like Wole Olanipekun and co, Femi Falana and co etc pay their lawyers with three years experience and above, atleast 500,000 naira monthly salary.
Lol, and you think its everytime they will be recruiting?

Do you think the people who are currently there want to leave their job so soon? Most especially under the tutelage of the great lawyers you mentioned...

What i always advised is to get like 5years experience and be good at what you do, get some few client like 1 or 2 while trying to garner experience and start small.

You can rent a small office on the mainland and start your own firm....

I know how much I paid for my 2 different land to lawyers to do an agreement...

Exactly my point, Lagos might be better compared to some state...

Like Ogun state, I'm not sure a lawyer can get more than 70k as a start, they just need to think outside the box
