Victor Osimhen Cost Nigeria The AFCON Title – Sunday Oliseh by Putindbutt(op): 6:03pm On Jan 22
Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has accused Victor Osimhen of playing a decisive role in Nigeria’s failure to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Soccernet.ng reports. We

Oliseh argues that Osimhen’s public outburst at teammate Ademola Lookman disrupted the team’s spirit at a critical stage of the tournament.

Nigeria eventually ended their campaign by beating Egypt in Saturday’s third-place play-off, claiming AFCON bronze for a record-extending ninth time. But for Oliseh, that outcome was only an indication of what might have been, after a tournament that had promised much more.

The former Juventus midfielder believes the Super Eagles’ problems began during their Round-of-16 match against Mozambique, a game Nigeria won comfortably 4-0. Ademola Lookman provided two assists, while Osimhen scored twice. Yet the result was overshadowed by an incident in the second half, when Osimhen angrily confronted Lookman for not passing the ball to him when he appeared to be in a good scoring position.

Although Lookman and head coach Eric Chelle handled the situation calmly after the match, Oliseh insists that the damage had already been done. He argues that the team’s chemistry and confidence were affected from that point on.

The statistics appear to support part of his case. Before that incident, Lookman had been Nigeria’s standout performer, registering three goals and four assists in his first three games of the tournament and emerging, by some distance, as one of the most influential players at AFCON 2025.

However, in the very next match, a 2-0 win over Algeria, Lookman neither scored nor assisted. The same pattern continued in the semi-final against Morocco, where Nigeria struggled in attack and were eventually knocked out on penalties after 120 minutes of goalless football. When Lookman was benched for the third-place play-off against Egypt, Nigeria again failed to score in open play and only secured victory via penalties.

For Oliseh, the connection is clear.

“Let's look at the toxicity that might have caused us (Nigeria) the AFCON title,” Oliseh said on his YouTube channel.

“We are confusing talent with license. Victor Osimhen is world class but talent is not license to destroy team chemistry.

“Look at the evidence. Since that public outburst against Ademola Lookman, one of our brightest lights, Lookman became a shadow of himself and we lost the bite.

“When you publicly diminish your teammates, you break their spirit. You destroy the very confidence a team needs to survive a semifinal. Against a team as tactically sharp as Morocco, we needed our best players at a hundred percent.

“Statistically, Ademola Lookman was the most dangerous player in the tournament, until that public verbal abuse broke his focus. You can't expect a playmaker to perform a miracle on the pitch when he has been demoralised by his own teammate.

“The conflict did its damage. We didn't just lose a game, we lost the psychological edge needed to win.

“What is worse, and frankly, what is most dangerous for our football is the fan culture that now tolerates this.”

Sunday Oliseh’s wider warning

Oliseh’s criticism did not stop at the Mozambique incident. He also pointed to what he described as a pattern of behaviour from Osimhen, reminding fans of the episode in which the Galatasaray forward posted a video criticising Finidi George during his time as Super Eagles head coach.

While acknowledging Osimhen’s importance to the national team and his outstanding goalscoring record, Oliseh insisted that no player is above discipline or respect.

“Scoring goals for Nigeria doesn't give you a license to disrespect certified legends like Finidi George or Victor Ikpeba,” Oliseh added. “It doesn't give you the right to disrespect your coaches or teammates.

“If we don't fix the discipline and the administration, there won't be a Super Eagles left to support.”

Osimhen is Nigeria’s second all-time highest goalscorer. The former Napoli star scored his 35th international goal against Algeria at the tournament, leaving him just two goals behind the late Rashidi Yekini’s long-standing national record.

I agree with oliseh 💯...

But this is very controversial talk and Nigerians would come for him.

But oliseh is very right. It's brave of him to say this. They would backlash him!
Re: Victor Osimhen Cost Nigeria The AFCON Title – Sunday Oliseh by Putindbutt(op): 6:12pm On Jan 22
Agreed. If Oshimen likes let him score one thousand goals. If he doesn't win a title with the national team, he cannot even lace the boots of Odion Ighalo in the lists of Nigerian all time.
Oshimen will only be compared with Mohamed Salah who has won nothing with his national team. The only difference is that Salah had gone to the world cup, Oshimen has not.

The WILLINGNESS of people to tolerate NONSENSE is one of the reasons the World is going to sh1t now.

I DON'T care whether Osimehn was right or wrong, that display of BLATANT STEWPIDITY should have been the END of his participation in that campaign.

That is NOT how you handle stuff like that.
You NEVER act like you're going to beat up your own teammate.
Especially NOT in a match you were already WINNING with MULTIPLE goals.

The moment he tried that NONSENSE, he should have been GONE.

Failing to PUNISH bad behaviour REINFORCES it.

Also, Lookman FORKED UP.
The moment Osimehn got all aggressive in his face is the moment he should have BROKEN his barely-mended face a second time.

'Tis the season to match MADNESS with MADNESS.

Re: Victor Osimhen Cost Nigeria The AFCON Title – Sunday Oliseh by Ihaveleftnaija: 6:41pm On Jan 22
Yes his outburst and arrogance could have played a part in demoralizing other players but he isn't the only one to blame. We always need a scapegoate when we lose something, it's a national sickness.
Re: Victor Osimhen Cost Nigeria The AFCON Title – Sunday Oliseh by EPIJOE: 6:41pm On Jan 22
Don't blame osimeh. It's just his zeal for winning games. Lookman plays selfish footballs at times. And we all know. Even though osimeh acted wrong with the outburst, it was due to the passion he had for the game.

Let's bygone be bygone
Re: Victor Osimhen Cost Nigeria The AFCON Title – Sunday Oliseh by obaidan: 6:41pm On Jan 22
Oliseh can be wise about this and talk to Osimhen privately about this
Using this to make content for his youtube channel because of monetization will only blow it bigger and damage the team chemistry the more.
Oliseh na adult, he should act like one.

I don't know if he cost them the title but dude is overrated for sure

He's nowhere near the level of Sadio Mane
Re: Victor Osimhen Cost Nigeria The AFCON Title – Sunday Oliseh by Laple0541(m): 6:43pm On Jan 22
Truly, we can’t win a major trophy with such on and off attitudes like that of Victor. He needs to be more stable and realize no player shines for ever. I love him as a player but he needs to do more to improve himself.

Nigeria as a country too needs to discover other strikers just as we did for Akor .
Re: Victor Osimhen Cost Nigeria The AFCON Title – Sunday Oliseh by Switruth: 6:43pm On Jan 22
Oliseh messed up big time with his commentary against Senegal. He was busy supporting morocco... Go and watch the match and listen to the nonsense he was vomiting from his mouth.... Person wey coach super eagles for just 3 months and start talking about juju. Foolish boy.

Oliseh sounds really troublesome

How do you single out your best player who was awarded the best tricker in the entire tournament by CAF as being your problem.

This shows Oliseh might be talented but he is a terrible manager of men and resources.

When you won the matches did you single Osimhen ad the reason you won your matches? If not why now? It's called a TEAM for a reason
Re: Victor Osimhen Cost Nigeria The AFCON Title – Sunday Oliseh by Walz001: 6:45pm On Jan 22
This is what the white can't do and they will technically push the narrative

They entered penalties shootout
We didn't score
The referee caused a lot of fear in them
Osihmen didn't do anything to burn the spirit down rather push it up in my own opinion

Have you ever shout at your brother's at home to hear up
Have you organized a game and shout at them to pull up

Broo let think well before we say things
