When I newly started working in a bank, I was in the Retail loan team; We usually approve loan application from the branches.

The bank was always willing to give loans to civil servants in NW and NE, than any other region. Their salary is always up to date. But you'll see inconsistencies in the Southern payments.

It's pathetic! How person go work, you no go pay am?
You need to see the way they toss them, you will submit physical copies of your credentials 1 million times, you will be asked to do bvn verification a thousand times and the latest one, you will be asked to print out your account statement to make sure they haven't paid you and you're trying to scam them grin

Does what you wrote even make sense to you.

1. What do you think is responsible for the crash in price of some of those commodities?

2. This is not only affecting farmers, it is affecting Agro Tech Companies and some financial institutions

3. When the worth of the value of your inputs is higher than the worth of your outputs. That's a loss. Their financial statement ain't looking good at all

4. Let's say farmer A . Maize farmer collected inputs worth 5 million and after harvest he couldn't even recover half of the loan. What do you think will happen to the farmer, the company and all?

I don't want to go into details and all, that thread raumdeuter shared summarized everything.
Prior to the removal of the fuel subsidy, or let's say in December 2022,a bag of rice sold for between ₦28,000 and ₦35,000.
By December 2024, that same bag was selling for ₦88,000–₦90,000, an increase of over 200%.

Similarly, 100kg of maize, which sold for ₦13,000–₦17,000 in 2022, had risen to ₦65,000–₦70,000 by 2024, representing a staggering 330–400% increase.
So, what caused this? It was just greed among some farmers. With the borders closed, and considering Nigeria’s population of over 200 million, even if all farmers quadrupled their current output, we still wouldn’t meet national demand. Knowing this, some farmers took advantage of the shortages, especially in rice and maize and they increased prices.
Today, many in the north have become billionaires almost overnight. That’s pure profiteering.

Between 2023 and 2024, almost half of poultry farms closed (I will provide you with the links) due to the high cost of production. Maize, an essential feed ingredient, became unaffordable, leaving farmers with little to no profit.
Many in our WhatsApp groups for the Remo zones, Ogun State Chapter, and the combined Ogun-Ibadan group were openly lamenting this crisis, many left the country while many put their farms for sales.

Thankfully, the federal government intervened in July 2024 by declaring a 150-day duty-free window to import maize. This move helped stabilize prices and allowed previously closed poultry farms to reopen. So the prices of food reduction we have now start from that move, It shows the immediate impact that access to affordable food inputs can have.

The truth is, Nigeria is not yet self-sufficient in food production. With over 200 million people, stopping food imports entirely is unrealistic. Doing so would only lead to hunger and more profiteering for farmers.
How many of our farmers are mechanized ones?
So we can't produce half of what we eat daily.

As for concerns that imports might negatively impact the economy, it works like a chain reaction, when essential items are affordable, it positively affects the cost and production of other goods, and farm products.
When the raw material is affordable the end product will also be affordable , I don't know how this is hard for you to understand .
Food availability at a cheaper price is the best thing to happen for common man.

I know you are a good Nigerian citizen and want the best for Nigeria and our farmers. So, when you go to the market and a bag of rice is sold for ₦55,000, pay ₦80,000 for yours and explain your reason that you don't want Nigeria to experience inflation
Thank you.

Lemme tell you something. There's nothing like greed here. Inputs and other cost of production keep increasing. DAP fertilizer was 50/60k for 50kg like 2 years ago but now is about a 100k for same kg. For a smale scale maize farmer, he will pay for labour in In-Season and during harvest. During harvest, he will pay for labour like plucking, threshing, winnowing, bagging and all of that. The cost of producing maize keeps increasing. Factor in all of these things and you will see is a big loss on the farmers and all with the crash in price.

You can't import your way out of food insecurity because it is counter productive and it will fall flat. Think about the future and how this will affect us as a nation. Serious hunger because production will be very very low.

here is what Adesina and Sanusi have to say about this.

For the record the price of chicken feed didn't drop, rather it is increasing.

Five Boko Haram terrorists, three vigilantes killed in Gwoza ambush in Borno

By: Zagazola Makama

At least five suspected Boko Haram terrorists and three local vigilantes were killed on Friday following an ambush along the Ngoshe–Pulka Road in Gwoza Local Government Area.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the attack occurred at about 2:30 p.m. when unknown gunmen engaged members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and Hunters Group on a routine patrol.

In the ensuing gun battle, five terrorists were killed, while three CJTF members Yunusa Ali Ananicha, Adamu Zakari, and Daddy Ali, also lost their lives.

The bodies of the CJTF members were evacuated to Gwoza General Hospital, certified dead on arrival, and subsequently released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI maintained a cautious alert along the axis following the incident while vigilance and reinforced patrols in the area was encouraged to prevent further attacks.

1 + 1 will always equal 2.
That is essentially the argument Sanusi and Adesina are making, and from a purely economic theory , they are 100% correct.

However, the real question is this, can that theory work in Nigeria, where we are not self-sufficient in food production?
Let me illustrate with a simple example.
Assume Lagos has just 3 loaves of bread for 25 people, while Aba has 10,000 loaves for 100 people, but we are restricted to go to Aba to bring bread for people in Lagos, what do you think will happen to bread seller in Lagos?
Profiteering.
Prices will skyrocket because scarcity gives sellers power.
That, is what has happened in Nigeria over the last 3 years.

Maybe you be Abroadian and you don't stay in Nigeria , because
Between September 2023 and March 2025, hunger was widespread. You could barely walk a kilometer without seeing people begging for money just to feed their families.
Now that food prices are easing slightly, some people are calling it a “bad policy.”

How can reducing hunger be a bad policy?

The truth is simple, you cannot plan an economy on empty stomachs.
A hungry man is an angry man. It is only when people are reasonably fed and stable that long-term economic planning can make sense.
Na statistics we go chop?

Look at Thailand for example. With a population of about 70 million, Thailand produces roughly 23 million tonnes of rice annually. Nigeria, with an estimated population of over 200 million, produces less than 7 million tonnes, yet our annual consumption is estimated at 11–12 million tonnes.
So the critical question remains,
Where is the shortfall supposed to come from?

Until Nigeria addresses food sufficiency and production at scale, applying textbook economic theories without considering local realities will continue to produce hardship rather than prosperity.

I am very much in Northern Nigeria. I am in the Agricultural Sector.

Quick fix doesn't solve a problem. With quick fix, you are creating more problems in the future.

What happened if they stop importation of those commodities?

Do you think importation will continue forever?

What do you think will happen to our local producers, the farmers?

Ironically when the merger was complete and it became APC, the party instead decided to reward PDP decampees with juicy positions, leaving the man behind. I asked him personally why it was so and he just replied 'that's politics'

Also, the greed of the locals, inadequate storage measures and other wahala will make local production unattractive

Everytime local manufacturers succeed in blackmailing the government in power and ignorant Nigerians in stifling importation of certain product(s), we always pay a bitter price. We saw it with rice manufacturers.

You cannot meet demand and yet you don't want importation to be allowed. What happens when demand exceeds supply? Greedy fvxkers increase price at will. Everybody just want to con the next man in this country.

Yes, Thailand’s rice success did not happen overnight, but the claim that Nigeria has not supported its farmers is not 100% correct.
Over the years, Nigeria has provided substantial support to farmers, particularly in rice production, through policies, funding, and direct interventions.

A key example is the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP).
The ABP provided billions of naira in loans, improved seeds, fertilizers, to hundreds of thousands of farmers across the country.
Tjough it is believed that the northern regions benefited more significantly, the programme play a major role nationwide.
Many of the rice clusters and modern rice mills we see today exist largely because of ABP support.

Beyond ABP, numerous grants and loan facilities were made available to farmers. But, a major challenge has been misuse of funds. In many cases, once these funds were disbursed, some beneficiaries diverted them to personal use instead of farming activities. I can cite countless real-life examples of this problem. Even I know someone who used the fund to buy Okada.

Another serious hurdle has been hoarding and capture of government support by a few individuals.
I can't count the numbers of times they will come to our farms write our names, take pictures but not knowing that they are just using us to get money from FG.

For instance, in 2021, after the COVID-19 lockdown, the federal government released grain running into hundreds of thousands of metric tons to support farmers and stabilize food supply.
In the South-West, a large portion of this grain was allegedly cornered by just two individuals from Ogun STATE, one based in Abeokuta, a former military officer (I don't want to mention his name), so all the grain that is meant for southwest was cornered by these 2 people. But, in the North, the allocation was reportedly distributed more evenly among beneficiaries.

So the critical question is this,
Should these failures be blamed on the Federal Government, or on weak distribution, or greedy people or accountability of those who are in charge?

So, In summary, support was given, funds were released, and interventions were made. The real issues lie in mismanagement, diversion, hoarding, and lack of accountability, not in the absence of government support.
