The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asked supporters of the party’s presidential aspirants to desist from divisive politics.

Top members of the opposition party, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, ex-governor of Anambra, have hinted at the possibility of contesting the presidency in the 2027 elections.

Recently, supporters of declared ADC presidential hopefuls have expressed differing views on zoning, with many Obi backers calling for the ticket to go to the south, while most Atiku supporters advocate an open contest.

However, during an interactive X Space on Saturday, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC national publicity secretary, asked the party supporters to back all presidential aspirants collectively.

The former minister of sports and youth development also emphasised that unity is crucial for the party’s success.

“Those supporting this divisiveness among supporters of any of the aspirants should stop what they are doing because they are clearly working to the advantage of the APC and President Bola Tinubu,” he said.

“Saying it is either this candidate or nothing is not helpful because getting the ticket alone means nothing.

“What is important is winning the election, and we cannot carry this divisiveness and expect to win.”

Abdullahi added that the party would strengthen cohesion and encourage its leaders to promote unity among aspirants.

“We believe that all our aspirants are eminently qualified, and vilifying anybody or any region is not helpful and will only make things more difficult,” he said.

“We are going to commence the process of strengthening unity and having our leaders speak with one voice.

“We are going to ignore people creating a sense of exceptionality and focus on what we are doing because we want to win this election.

“Those shouting ‘Obi or nothing’ are equally not helping him. They are preaching division, and they are not selling him. They are not providing room for people from other places to support him.

“They should stop making others take hard stances because everyone needs to be on board for us to win this election.”

On January 20, the former vice-president cautioned supporters of opposition leaders against trading insults, warning that such attacks only benefit the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said anyone who insults Obi or himself does not have the interests of the coalition or Nigerians at heart.

On January 6, Abubakar said no ADC presidential aspirant would withdraw ahead of the 2027 polls, adding that all qualified aspirants would “present themselves freely” when the party begins its selection process.

Opposition needs to come together now, time is being wasted. It takes time to organize, mobilize, strategize, and take action.

Obi is a founding member of the coalition. The idea for all opposition figures to unite was his idea and he has maintained that he's not desperate to be president even though he's overly qualified. Obi will play the politics and all aspirants will queue behind the eventual winner of the primaries. Obidients (not Agbadorians pretending to be one) need to manage their expectations and trust their principal. The stakes in 2027 is too monumental to be fumbled with.

Some people in here keep speculating that APC will crash sooner or later. But as e dey go so, I can say same for ADC.

Atiku still wants to be president under ADC OBI is having same dream . Considering both to be sore losers , one will leave the party after the primaries which is not how it supposed to be .

Why didn’t OBI lure people
Into LP since he has the pulling power and supporters but he rather allowed to be lured into ADC where knew Atiku’s stand and ambition to rule Nigeria.

The big question is can Obi win Atiku in the primaries? If he wins can Atiku remain to support him ? Let’s see how it goes .

The biggest problem is that ADC is combination of strange fellow with one agenda but for different reasons. The agenda is to remove president Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Reasons
1. So northerner can take power back.
2. So igbo can rightly has a taste of presidency
3. So disposed bigwigs politicians can find their way back to the corridor of power. Etc

I agree that a combination of Atiku and Obi would be a potent team. Where I disagree with you is your suggestion of a single term for Atiku followed by another single term for Obi. I laughed at your baby sense of Nigerians and Nigeria’s political patterns. In Nigeria, politics is a personal project only during campaigns; the moment you win, you become the project of your tribe, religion, and ethnic group.
Even if Atiku agreed to govern for just four years, I would bet that he would renege a few months after assuming office, because his supporters and sycophants having grown accustomed to power and will not want to relinquish it after only 48 months. His ethnic base would also insist that it is their turn to enjoy a full tenure in Aso Rock.. Perhaps you think after all these years of marginalisation, disrespect and struggle for power, an Igboman will become President, only to give up after 4 years, then Igbos will thereafter wait for another 4 decades to get to Aso Rock again. So, that idea should be discarded; it simply will not work
