When I woke up this morning, that is what came to my mind, in this present economy university is not for the poor. My daughter that gained admission last year, it is now that I know that you can't compare the expenses with when they were in secondary school.
I don't understand, when you just pay some amount hoping to rest for sometime, they will just call you again for money everytime they pay money, I am now wondering if the university is a business company.

What Nigerians mean by "learn a skill" is very funny.

But I really don't blame them. A country that doesn't give their graduates the opportunity to practice their professions rightly will have to settle for a redefinition of simple terms.

The poster obviously doesn't know what school is. That is why he even includes "public speaking" as a skill.

grin grin grin

After 10 years, when we all see the result of such posts on the fabric of the Nigerian society, we will then cry out to God to help save us.

Let me give you two countries:
Pakistan - High skill based
Israel - High education based

The first one are one of the poverty capitals of the world
The second one is one of the richest and the most advanced in the world.
Compare Israel and China.

Let see....

School is not a scam; even though school won't teach you most of the things you will know in life. But it will help you to think ahead and shape you on the path to success.

Though the rest of the things are up for you to do, you can't underestimate the importance of acquiring a higher education.

Higher education will instill in you the spirit of self determination and will force you not to live a mediocre life or remain comfortable in your current condition.

Higher education will stretch you to the limit and push you to the wall, especially Nigerian universities. Most of these things will instill in you a survival mindset once you get to the outside world 🌍.

I'm pretty sure you are still searching for better job with your certs

I dropped out because money failed, not because sense failed.
Today, I'm a business owner, a landlord with no certificate and married to a woman like me, no degree, no regrets and blessed with three beautiful children.
I sleep when I want. I wake up when some of you are already begging alarms to save you from lateness.
I started from a level most graduates look down on and that same level is where I built my ladder.
I don’t regret not finishing school. Not for one second.
In Nigeria, only a fool wastes his sharpest years chasing certificates without learning survival.
Because here’s the bitter truth nobody likes to hear:
Degrees impress people. Skills feed families. Hustle builds freedom. undecided undecided cool cool

Whatever you want to do, go to school first, especially a tertiary institution. Let the school pass through you too. a graduate vulcaniser, may start pumping tires at the road side, graduate to 'Phil tire clinic' (packaging) using advanced technologies to fix tire issues, then graduate to attending to tire issues of luxury vehicles for rich people, then graduate to importing all types of tires and vulcanising equipments, by now he will be popular in town. Then he will move to train others under government contract like youth empowerment programs of the government. An illiterate vulcaniser will spend his whole life on the road side. That's the difference.

Many people don't understand the post...
I didn't say school is bad...
I am a student as well...
But if I tell you how much I spend a week... I should have been a millionaire by now..
If you nor get money or your parents are not so rich.. nor go school....

Some Nigerian universities are even offering the skills I mentioned as study courses presently....
But they will not teach as voracious as the outer educational environment

I know many of my former course mate still doing private business..

I don't know school is important and I am investing much...

See I studied economics.. And statistics
I am still studying another one...

I am only pointing out the financial implications if you nor get money...

You will find it difficult... Because it's quite expensive now
Re: If You Don't Have Money To Go To School Please Do Not Go, Learn A Skill. by daveP(m): 12:23pm On Jan 26
Here's why it will continue to be a govt problem

For every 2 term tenure(8years) of a president, over half a million are graduating annually. That puts the figures of 8years at about 5 to 6m graduates.

In retrospect, the government is barely creating jobs for 30,000 graduates per year. That's barely 300,000 jobs for over 6,000,000 graduates.

I know not all graduates are good enough but if we cut those ones off, the jobs are still not enough for the good graduates.

Party loyalists are champions of screaming the "Learn a skill" noise every blessed day so the burden can fall on the private sector. But the very graduates in millions are now having to be in the same room with the uneducated and partially educated who are even 5× the graduates popular per year. Rem we have to factor in location where jobs can easily pop up and pay is good. This alone makes cities like Abuja, Lagos, PH, Aba, Ibadan, Borno to be loaded with artisans all competing for the few available slots to earn a daily wage at work sites.

If you add how useless the currency gets daily, and the ever constant desperation expressed through cheating and stealing from employers, and then the low quality of job done, you'll see why the larger blame will never ever shift from the government.

Is like many dunno how concentrated many fields are because Nigerian youths are loaded and eager to earn something to not rely on anybody. Before graduation, we see the increase of entrepreneurs among university students doing 4 to 5 different trades with their studies to survive. They come out of that and try to continue but government policies and the harsh environment and saturated field makes it hard.

Now lets add the low purchasing power of those expected to demand for such goods and services and we see why the buck lies on the government.

It took barely 7years for Nigerian youths to flood the tech field. Same way it took barely 6 years for the same youths to turn Master's Degree to something so common it barely makes a difference in many formal rooms in Nigeria. Even those that got their abroad still have to compete as well with the home based

In conclusion, let's just sincerely say this

220m Nigerians are existing daily with NO GOVERNMENT

Everywhere is saturated

He has told you the plain truth.

One thing, however, is that university education has lifted millions out of poverty.

All my classmates in unilag are either middle class or higher.

One from a poor home works in an oil servicing company and I think they've sent him to the US.

Just don't have read poverty ridden courses like education.or learn how to monetize it.

Many teachers enjoy their job, though it doesn't come with riches.

My advice, go to school first, oh!!!!(and by school I mean University not Polytechnic... Its important, You can go and learn skills after school unless you want to run rat race for the rest of your life...Very few, I mean like 1% of uneducated eventually make it in life without education most especially in Nigeria,,By going to school you increase your chances(also remeber not all that went to school aslo make it but the percentage are far higher). The surest thing in life is death..You can only increase your chances of achieving everything(Most especially success), and education is the platform
You don't understand the Op at all.
He is not telling people not to go to university.
He is saying that if you don't have money to see you through university education, that it's better you go and learn a skill.
That funding tertiary education requires a lot of money.
Which is 100% true.

I agree!
That's why I want our educational curriculum to include vocational skills at all levels!
By the time you are done with secondary school, you would have acquired 3-4 skills that will make you a service provider!
You can later go to school!

He is not saying people should not go to school or that learning a skill is better than going to school. No,he is not saying so.
What he is saying is that if you don't have money or your father doesn't have money, that you shouldn't bother to go to higher institutions. If you do, you will suffer till you drop out after suffering and wasting some years already.
So,he is advising that in that case, that one should rather learn a skill instead wasting your time going to school when you know that you won't have money to complete it.

The only country that can compare with Israel is the USA. Not even Japan. That is why the USA can never sacrifice the ally with any form of leftist movement.

Even Japan itself cannot be brought down to the level of China. China is about speed and quantity. They are racing to catch up with the USA. Japan is a high-education-based system GDP per capita: $32,443
Israel is a high-education-based system GDP per capita: $54,294
China is a skill-based system GDP per capita: $13,314

Can you now see why I said,

The comparison cannot even be brought down to Japan

Skills is the way to go.
During that Christmas season, my daughter checked in Instagram, and called a lady to come do her nails, to gum some fancy finger nails ontop. She said the lady discounted for her, say na 15k be my bill. The lady finally came, did the nails, my last daughter came and said daddy I wanna do too, another 15k went down. As the lady was finishing, madam say she wan do her own and paid the lady another 15k. In the process my sister in law stopped by and said she will do, ie another 15k. To crown it up, my mama stopped by, saw the nails and did hers too, 15!. Funny thing is that that young nail girl came from another appointment and after she was done with us was heading for another booking with clients.
Omo, that lady left my house with 75k in her pocket in under 3hrs and was going to fix more nails elswere as her phone kept ringing and all she was saying was she will soon be there.
Do you know that I tried convincing her to come teach my daughters, I offered her generous financial terms but she declined giving all sorts of excuses.
Anyway I have told my kids to get all the eyuipmemts, I will pay, they can learn through watching YouTube and practicing.

Not just nails, pedicure and manicure is a good skill, a good one .....not just those; building skills like glaziers,P.O.P, foreign doors installations, plumbing, modern furniture, stainless steel staircase, motor mechanical practician and a lot more.
After my service 2022, I got a job under Mikano company Lagos, I was being paid #150k for a start, I had to quit after two months to learn a skill for 12months
The whole of 2023 I really suffered, I wore 2 shirts, 1 short jean and 3 boxers for 12months, I was locked in and determined, I barely ate good food for 4-5 days all thanks to my landlord's daughter who was helping me out occasionally with food and nacks.
The whole of 2024 I built my contacts, I literally have more than 5 prominent architects on my contact list.
Today I roughly make #600-#800 thousand per month as a bachelor, if you see me dey play snooker you go think say I dey do yahoo, at least #600k just from water collector piping and glazier works....for instance yesterday and today I made #60,000 from water collector piping installations.
The problem with our youths lately is they don't want to suffer, some blame lack of sponsorship, I didn't have any sponsor for 12months, within that period all my friends avoided me, now, no 48hours will pass by without those same people billing me. Including today 26th one still texted me and I still give them the least and still avoid a lot.
Nothing pass handwork, it's a hope for the hopeless anywhere anytime. You see Nigerians travelling abroad without a skill, what are you going there to do?? To sell drugs and run credit card scams??
Whatever you do for your kids to learn a skill, do it, infact force them weda they like it or not, during school vacations let them keep it up, they might hate you, but they will love you when it becomes their source of income.

Bros there's no excuse why students are underperforming if not lack of concentrations.
60's,70's,80's,90's those who went to high institutions then majority of them were too poor to compare nowadays students buy luxurious cars and live in luxurious buildings.
The logistics there is; in gen Z period, it's not about being comfortable as a student that should improve their grades, even those comfortable enough are the ones messing up full time, I was a course rep 100lvl and 200lvl, the comfortable students were the ones messing up. Some of them don't know what they want self, they just want answer graduates. How can someone spend 4 years studying Igbo Linguistics or theater art or philosophy and logic or Political science or Agric econs,or library and information in high institution?? For 4 good years .... when the person start lectures e go loose passion towards educational learning.
In all, including the comfortable students and the otherwise, they're no longer serious. It's all about the future, youth don't think about the future anymore and how to set the foundations, they want the future to be now and now to be the future....they want to deck a building without setting a foundation. Who does that??

While education is very important, it's no longer confined to the four walls of formal educational institutions--esecially tertiary level. The world, the West and SE Asia at least, has gone past paper qualifications. If your goal is to make money, go learn a trade, some skills, or be an apprentice to a successful entreprenuer! It's high time people stopped going through tertiary education just to join the bad statistics, while knowing ab initio that they are not really competitve for or well connected to get the few available job slots.

You made a whole lot of sense though.

The thing is, formal education(tertiary institutions) will broaden your scope(mind) to think wide, which makes you to compare and contrast nicely. Because of the compounded knowledge(theory and little pratical) you were taught in school, you will be able to see beyond a single initiative.

Am not saying that the craftsmen/tradesmen by the road side is lacking knowledge, they know their skills very well and can also expand, but their creatively-thinking is limited.

Some exceptional businessmen are just like the school graduates though. These ones are special.

You see the bolded? Leave that thing. Learning that won't put food on the table. Someone will still need a school to study those.

You think leaning with bootcamps, YouTube tutorials and free link to research articles will make one an expert within 2-3 years? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You are right by saying tertiary education is for the rich. However, it is genuinely getting hard to make it with the bolded if anyone doesn't have a degree.

Don't allow Elon musk deceive you by saying you don't need a college degree for a breakthrough in STEM. That's a lie. Even having a quant degree can make breakthroughs for someone in the digital financial sector in the US.

The advice I have is this; if person head no fit carry book or STEM, make him enter street and forget about technology brouhaha. Do the one your power fit reach.

No be everybody go graduate
No be everybody wey pass through uni go sabi wetin them teach am
No be everybody go use his/her certificate work
No be everybody go reach the pinnacle of his/her career.
