FG Signs Enugu Airport Concession Agreement by Putindbutt(op): 3:46pm On Jan 26
The Federal Government has signed the formal concession agreement for the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

The agreement, which was signed on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, marks a significant milestone in its efforts to modernise Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure through public-private partnerships.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the Minister on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, the signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Abuja, where the Minister received a combined delegation of Enugu State Government officials and representatives of Aero Alliance, the concessionaire.

The Enugu State delegation was led by the Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, while the Aero Alliance team included Engr. Chuks Aniekwe, Barrister Oyiwodu Okibe-Oga, Onyedikachi Nwachukwu, Kester Enwereonu, and Barrister Michael Nwaechie of Ivy Solicitors.

Also present from the Federal Government side were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr Yakubu Adams Kofarmata; the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku; Director, Legal Services, FAAN, Mrs. Bridget Iwinose Gold, alongside other top officials of the Ministry and FAAN.

In his address, Keyamo described the event as the conclusion of a painstaking and transparent process that began several years ago.

Keyamo said, “ Today is the end of a very long and tedious process regarding the concession of the Enugu Airport. The process culminated on the 31st of July, 2025, when the Federal Executive Council approved the proposal to concession the Enugu Airport, subject, of course, to contract.’’

He explained that following the Federal Executive Council’s approval, the Ministry, FAAN, and Aero Alliance engaged in extensive negotiations, including consultations with aviation unions, to ensure that workers’ welfare remained a top priority.

He said, “We did these agreements with the rights and privileges of workers uppermost in our minds. Let me say today that we have fully respected and preserved the rights of aviation workers. They have not been retrenched, their terms and conditions of employment have not changed in any way, and they remain workers of the Federal Government and FAAN.’’

The minister noted that safeguarding jobs and staff welfare were central to the concession framework.

“The workers have not been short-changed in any way at all. Their jobs are safe and protected. Having taken care of the rights of workers, we then addressed other critical issues and virtually covered all areas before the signing of this agreement,” he added.

Keyamo noted that while the main concession agreement has now been concluded, two operational issues — security charges and the financial model for airport operations — will be resolved in the coming weeks to ensure smooth implementation.

“There are two little issues after signing, in terms of operationalizing the agreement, regarding security fees and the financial model of the airport. These will be resolved in the next few weeks. But as far as the main concession is concerned, we have agreed to concession the Enugu Airport to Aero Alliance today, ” the Minister said.

He welcomed all stakeholders to what he described as a historic ceremony that will reposition the Enugu Airport for efficiency, improved service delivery, and enhanced passenger experience.

The concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, is part of the Federal Government’s broader aviation sector reform agenda aimed at attracting private investment, improving infrastructure, boosting regional connectivity, and strengthening Nigeria’s aviation competitiveness.

The Enugu State Government had, in April 2025, announced that the concession process for the Akanu Ibiam International Airport is over 70% complete and should be concluded by the second quarter of 2025.

The Enugu State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Obi Ozor, explained that the process is being led by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Aviation in collaboration with private investors.

Look for dictionary meaning of the word CONCESSION, and stop foaming.

New operator of Enugu airport will manage it and share any profit made with federal government. Profits shared by federal government from this concession is going into Federation Account and will be shared among states.

Money made from Lagos airport is still being shared among states, every month.

Our education is questionable, please what exactly did Tinubu do for Enugu state that needed him to be praised. At a time when millions or billions of our common wealth fund is galvanized and used for upgrading south west airports like Murtala Mohammed international airport Lagos and that of Enugu international airport is concessioned because it doesn't deserve our common wealth fund, you still want to blindly support almost a sell out of Enugu airport to the highest bidder!
When Buhari was misbehaving,we warned the Fulanis but they were supporting him blindly because his nepotism is to their favour but today, they are shouting to high heavens.
Now Tinubu has taken the nepotism to another level,we hope that few years done the line,Yorubas can not and should never complain when the odd is against them....I rest my case.

Read what Keyamo said about profit sharing they are finalizing.
Enugu airport is not as viable as Lagos airport. That’s what warranted the concession.
You can’t expect the operator to run at a loss. You want federal government to eat its cake and still have it.

Whatever profit given to federal government is ok, as profit.
Man, face front. If you or your generation knows how to run it better and give better profit to FG, step forward and share your proposal with Keyamo. I ti bo li bo.

Lol, you want FG to use billions to rebuild Enugu Airport? 🤡. How much is the airport returning to FG yearly?. You want to compare to the busiest and most profitable airport in the country that the earnings from it is used to run other unprofitable airports?.
You for ask your darling PDP to rebuild the airport for you na, Mr Bitter.
