Tinubu Jokes About How S.L. Akintola’s ‘Magic Ring’ Failed Him During Coup in 1966 (VIDEO)

A throwback video from the year 2000 showing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, then Governor of Lagos State, making a light-hearted, coup-themed joke about the late former Premier of Western Nigeria, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, has resurfaced online and is currently generating reactions on social media.

In the footage, which has been trending across digital platforms, Tinubu is seen narrating an anecdote laced with humour while referencing the circumstances surrounding Nigeria’s first military coup of January 1966, during which Akintola was assassinated.

Speaking jokingly, Tinubu suggested that the late Akintola was believed to possess a mystical Yoruba ring capable of transforming him into different objects whenever danger approached.

“It is equally or not equivalent and it was the only recoup that got him away. They’ve given him this Yoruba charm that whenever the evil comes or the bullet comes, he can rub the ring and he will turn himself to a dog or anything he wishes,” Tinubu said amid laughter.

He further narrated that Akintola’s first son, Ambassador Yomi Akintola, was by his side when soldiers arrived during the coup.

“And Yomi was by his side that day the army came. Bullet hit the wall, now he rubbed the ring, tried to change to a stick, he didn’t change. He asked Yomi, ‘Omo, kini mo da?’” Tinubu said, using a Yoruba phrase meaning, “My son, what did I turn to?”

According to the narration, Ambassador Yomi Akintola responded, “Dad, you didn’t turn to anything,” a remark that reportedly sent the audience into loud laughter.

The video, recorded during a public engagement in Tinubu’s early years as Lagos governor, has resurfaced at a time of renewed public interest in the legacy of Chief Akintola, whose 60th remembrance anniversary is approaching.

While many online users have described the clip as harmless humour reflective of the era, others have debated its appropriateness given the historical significance of Akintola’s role in Nigeria’s political evolution and the tragic circumstances of his death.

We said it that Tinubu was in bed with IBB and Sani Abacha while pretending to be fighting for NADECO. He has never even mentioned Abiola after running on his campaign mantra and winning. To him, he just wanted to prove that he could do what Abiola failed to do. Chargoury and Badaru, two of Abacha's bagmen, are now his close confidantes today.

This is the reason we should write our history. Is it the same SL Akintola that fought before he died and did not die like a chicken? He did not go down without a fight so what's this all about? About writing our history, there are books about SL Akintola and they can tell story about this man but if Tinubu can tell the story of Akintola, I want him to tell his own life story, let's check something. Starting from his parents 🤡 We should ban those who don't have a clear history from telling history please. It's an insult to our collective intelligence. The b is ggest mistake the government made, and so many of our politicians do this was to turn Akintola's residence to a Court of Appeal. We no de preserve history, we will just destroy things and be building new things.

One of his sons wrote a book about him where he described his father's death. You may find that in libraries abroad and in some archives but the title of the book was Akintola, the man and the legend: A biography
by Akintola, Victor Ladipo
.

Others have written on him but I rely on his son's account for something like this.

The spot where PM Balewa's body was found should have been a historical site. Hopefully it's not been taken over by bandits undecided

The house didn't belong to Akintola. It was one of the houses abandoned by the British when they left. Fani Power was staying at Agodi, while Akintola lived at the house which still stands there till date

In as much as I'm indifferent towards Akintola. But the fact that he died like a Man deserves some respect. He died fighting

P.S. But if he didn't shoot back at the soldiers,he might have lived just like Fani Kayode lived too. But Akintola was already prepared.

They knew something would happen, but never even knew it could be a coup. The entire Western Region was in crisis and it was killing here and there. He got a Gun and was taught how to shoot by Lagerma and that was what ended him

That's the part that is of concern to me here. The way he died is not something that should be revised into a joke.

Once he died there, that place should have been preserved. That's how we recollect history. I just updated my post you quoted to include the video of where Tafawa Balewa's body was found. Do you know what that site is today?

I have no idea where Balewa's was. I only know of that of Aguyi Ironsi and Adekunle Fajuyi. Both were killed somewhere at Lalupon on the outskirts of Ibadan

However some few years ago,on the very land they were killed, their statues have been erected side by side which still stands there till date

Some people are so carried away they turn joke to mockery. I am sure if the story is true the children would have told it to their children with everyone laughing . There is no Mockery in what Tinubu said

What is the insult in narrating what he witnessed? Were you born then ? He should cover up truth he witnessed because Akintola is your revered Yoruba leader or just tell us if you also rely on juju that can fail you. Satan has no free gifts, he gives with right hand and collects multiple folds with left hand. Put your trust only on God for protection

Anybody who told you that Akintola fought the army boys with any gun must be in the same level of intellect with goons who claimed Col. Fajuiyi wanted to die with Gen. Ironsi. Yoruba have many colorful storytellers.
