Man that day wasn't good, I witnessed how my house was vibrating due to the bomb impact, many people were running helter skelter, the streets were very empty, at some point i thought the world was coming to an end. I will never forget that horrific day. |

My mother was at Oshodi that year and while travelling back to Ota a soldier ran off the cantonment and jumped inside the coaster bus she was in while the soldier urged the driver to drive off. Few minutes after kaboom.... The noise sounded like violent thunderstorm in far away Ota. |

No be small alert we dey that day o! We no dey carry anything, na only instinct. |

JomoGbomo2:If the state had a functional fire service, the fire that started meters away from the barrack would have been put out before getting to the barrack So Yes, Tinubu govt should be held responsible |

If there is a side lesson in this it is this. Do not be deceived by those who live abroad and beat drums of war for you to dance to. This was a munitions store imagine that extended over days and nights. With targeting. |

"By dawn, the devastation was clear. Streets were deserted, homes were abandoned, and the scale of human loss was staggering. Official figures put the death toll at more than 1,000 lives, with about 5,000 injured and at least 20,000 displaced. Independent observers believe the casualties may have been even higher. Mass burials were carried out for the unidentified victims, and today the Oke Afa Memorial Arcade stands as a solemn reminder of that night" ‐‐-------------------------------------------------------------------------- THAT COUNTRY NIGERIA IS CRUEL after all that disaster 😢 😔... 1. Not even a list to mention or honor the "more than 1000 lives lost" 2. No remembrance holiday in Lagos state in their honor and lessons learned shared by the military to help us understand the truth about what happened and the mitigation in place to forestall future occurrences. 3. No compensation to those who lost properties or were maimed or traumatized till date because of that incident that should NEVER have happened to them if the military was not wreckless with storage and poor preservation of ammo and hardware within the reach densely populated society. 4. I recall how angry Obasanjo was about the people's rage than he was about the AVOIDABLE disaster 😳 |

OredoPikin2:How could you be holding Lagos state responsible for an incident that the FG is fully responsible for? Yes they can help but they are not the responsible party. |

JomoGbomo2:Federal govt is not responsible for providing fire fighting service to a state That is exclusively the responsibility of a state |

What's the meaning of cantonment pls? Is cantonment the same thing with the usual barracks we normally see? And, the bomb took off inside a military resident(barrack)? OredoPikin2: |

Why were they running straight into a canal? Didn't they notice it was a canal? |
| Re: Remembering The Tragic Ikeja Cantonment Explosion 24 Years Ago. by Raph82(m): 12:02pm On Jan 29 |
The people that ran into the canal and died are way more than the people being killed by the bomb explosion itself. What a horrible way to die. Each time I go through Oke Afa, it brings back that ugly moment that can not be erased. May God rest the souls of the departed. Nigeria indeed happened to them. |
| Re: Remembering The Tragic Ikeja Cantonment Explosion 24 Years Ago. by RillJ(m): 12:11pm On Jan 29 |
A horrible and avoidable experience. Many died, plunging into the canal out of panic and confusion. May their souls rest in peace! |

Love800:Maybe I am the only one that read the full writeup The fire did not start inside the cantoment. The fire started in a street market close the cantoment. If Lagos state had a responsive and functional fire service, knowing fully well that with such fire happening close to a place like that, a major catastrophic was about to happen. Stop defending govt failures pls |

SultanOfPuna:This comment of yours is inappropriate in this situation. We suppose to remember and be in a mourning mood for those who lost their lives on that fateful day. This is not a time for jokes please. |

I remember this unfortunate incident vividly. That evening I went to take house fellowship with my wife to be. We heard the explosion in Sango Ota. It was scary. May the souls of those who perished because of the negligence of some people continue to rest in peace. |

JomoGbomo2:What about the canal and emergency response |
| Re: Remembering The Tragic Ikeja Cantonment Explosion 24 Years Ago. by engrchykae(m): 12:35pm On Jan 29 |
My friend Henry Kingsley was moving with the crowd towards the canal when he said he noticed smell of swamp. He started shouting but the crowd behind kept pushing forward. He now noticed that the many in front have disappeared. We were roommates at room 107 deeper life campus fellowship Futo 2007 You can see the trauma in his face as he narrates the ordeal. What we heard from the news is far different from what really happened. |

I was staying at Olodi-Apapa part of Lagos . I can remember the doors and gates shaking to the blast . It was just panic and poor emergency response system that created the havoc . |
