If not for Gumi's negative public impression courtesy of his support/advocacy for bandits and their likes,I don't think this is a big deal.
I mean it wouldn't because he's an Islamic scholar and the navy man could one of his sheep.

Any armed force personell as long as he is on uniform is not supposed to do this. The problem is that he is on uniform. Get the context and stop supporting disgrace. If you check now this is one the so called repentant boko haram they have placed in the army.

Squatting to greet an elder is not out of place at all in African culture. It is a clear sign of respect, good upbringing, and honour, not weakness or exaggeration. And truly, outsiders may not know the depth or nature of the relationship between the younger person and the elder.

dont mind him he has phone he should browse it out. it is wrong especially when in combat uniform, if it was the ceremonial uniform it more acceptable

This is not about age but the uniform.
It's enough for him to salute him which is the traditional thing to do. If he can do prostration if he wasn't wearing any of the military uniforms.

What rank was Abubakar Gumi when he retired from the Nigerian Army?…he was a captain and never made it to the rank of a Major…in the military anywhere in the world including Nigeria, age is secondary…that was why Yerima barked at the police escorts of the FCT minister. He belittled and disrespected them even though he was much younger than them….

Now why should a higher officer of the Nigerian military bow to Gumi? As what. He couldn’t salute as Gumi was beneath him…but demonstration was much worse. That was not right.
