Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced plans to initiate legal action against the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what it describes as a “continued failure” to directly address Nigerians on allegations surrounding his academic credentials.

In a statement released on Monday, the PDP accused the APC leadership of shielding the president from public scrutiny following renewed debates over the authenticity of a school certificate linked to Tinubu, an issue that has resurfaced amid heightened political tensions and public demand for transparency.

According to the PDP, the matter goes beyond partisan politics and touches on national integrity, accountability, and public trust in democratic leadership. The party argued that Tinubu, as Nigeria’s president, has a constitutional and moral obligation to personally clarify the controversy rather than allow party officials and spokespeople to respond on his behalf.

“The persistent silence of President Tinubu on this issue raises serious concerns,” the PDP said. “Nigerians deserve a clear, direct, and unambiguous explanation from the president himself.”



The opposition party also faulted the APC national chairman for what it described as “complicity through inaction,” alleging that the ruling party has failed to uphold internal and national standards of accountability by not compelling its leader to address the allegations publicly.

Legal experts say the proposed lawsuit, if filed, could test the limits of political responsibility and freedom of expression in Nigeria, particularly regarding whether opposition parties can compel elected officials to make public statements on contentious personal matters.

The APC has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, insisting that the certificate issue has been settled by relevant authorities in the past. Party officials argue that the renewed focus on the matter is an attempt to distract from governance and ongoing economic reforms.

As of the time of filing this report, President Tinubu has not issued a personal statement addressing the PDP’s latest claims.

The development adds another layer to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, where questions of transparency, leadership credibility, and public communication continue to dominate national discourse.

If tinubu is sure he did not forge his certificate then he should come out publicly to address Nigerians.

You can’t shout “PDP is dead” and still argue that Tinubu controls judiciary and legislature in the same breath. If power is total like you claim, then a public address shouldn’t scare anybody. Consistency no be crime.
