Pascal Dozie is the man who knew that Nigerians talk too much.

In 2001, the Nigerian government wanted to auction GSM licenses.

The price was $285 Million.

It was a ridiculous amount of money at the time.

Big global players like Vodafone and AT&T looked at the data.

They concluded: "Nigerians are poor. They live on less than $1 a day. They cannot afford mobile phones."

They walked away.

Pascal Dozie saw what they missed.

He knew that Nigerians are Communal.

We love to talk. We love to gossip. We love to connect.

He knew that a Nigerian would skip a meal just to buy airtime.

So, he decided to bet everything on MTN.

He used a strategy called The Syndicate Power.

Here is how he helped build the most profitable company in Nigeria:

1. The "Crowd-Funding" Miracle.

Pascal Dozie didn't have $285 Million in his pocket.

And foreign banks refused to lend him money for a "Risky African Project."

So, he did something old-school.

He called his friends.

He gathered a group of Nigerian investors (The "Founding Fathers" of MTN Nigeria).

He convinced them to put their own cash on the table.

He sold them a Vision, not just a Spreadsheet.

He teaches us that when the Banks say No, look to your Circle.

Your first investors are often the people who trust You, not the project.

2. The "Diamond" Standard (Technology in Banking).

Before MTN, Pascal Dozie founded Diamond Bank.

He was the first to introduce "Real-Time Online" banking in Nigeria.

Before him, if you paid money into a branch in Lagos, it took days to reflect in Kano.

He used technology to fix that.

He proved early on that Technology is the ultimate Differentiator.

He didn't build the biggest bank, but he built the most modern one at the time.

3. The "Silent" Chairman.

Pascal Dozie is rarely in the news. You won't see him fighting on Twitter or flashing cars.

He operates from the Boardroom.

He understands that real power is Governance.

He set up the structures that allowed MTN and Diamond Bank to run professionally.

He teaches us that you don't need to be the "Face" of the company to be the "Brain" of the company.

Why am I telling you this?

Many of you are discouraged by "Data."

"The economy is bad."
"People are poor."
"Nobody is buying."

Pascal Dozie teaches us to Trust our Gut.

The "Experts" (Vodafone) had the data, but they missed the culture.

Pascal Dozie knew the Culture.

He knew that Nigerians would hustle to pay for what they value.

Don't let a spreadsheet talk you out of a market you understand intuitively.

Do you need help raising capital or rallying partners for a "Crazy" idea?

If you have a vision that others think is impossible, but you know it will work, we need to talk. I help entrepreneurs structure their pitch to attract the right partners.

I hope you learned something.

This story just shows the power of understanding people, not just numbers. This manchi no ignore data, he read Nigerian culture correctly. Vision plus local insight beats foreign assumptions every time☝🏽😊.... Huge lesson for entrepreneurs if you truly understand your market, don’t let outsiders scare you off. 👇🏾😡

This story exaggerates the role of the good old man. He did well, but they make it sound like he founded MTN in Nigeria or single handedly brought it to Nigeria.

And he is a Nigerian. To be frank only Asians and Africans can invest in africa. They are good is making very little profit. But not western company. Foreige company will not want to touch the soil. They would rather operate from space. Like star link.

Even Etisalat operated from space. They never run cable around Nigeria. Their down fall was the 4g race. 4g could be difficult to operate from space. They needed land cable and they felt it does not worth it. They lose customers and ran out of business.

The western big player They are only interested in oil and resources. Not consumers base market.

Africa is still not ripe for the type of profit they are looking for because of low purchasing power. Any country that's can't afford brand new cars Is not worth it.

Yeah he did. MTN was a boutique telecoms company in SA, he wasn't the first mover though Econet was, but he mastermind the entrance of MTN (small at that time) to the Nigerian space

Make use of the lesson in the message and dont always unnecessarily looking for a reason to argue....don't be an unfortunate man.

Have money that gain attention, be connected, get courted by foreign investors, take massive loan, pitch to government for license, get license, take another massive loan, build infrastructure, now staart milking consumers

He knew that a Nigerian would skip a meal just to buy airtime.
I don’t think this is true as at then, there was no data to support that an average Nigerian could skip a meal to buy airtime. I remember NITEL cards thou, but airtime stuff wasn’t prevalent. We had to go to NITEL offices sometimes to make a call.

But I must agree, Baba Dozie was a visionary. May God continue to bless the repose of his soul in Jesus Christ Mighty Name Amen 🙏

To appear on the Front page of Forbes magazine, means you are an extraordinary person and an uncommon entrepreneur.

The History of online 🏦 banking in Nigeria is incomplete without the name Pascal Dozie.

Well-done Sir
We celebrate you
