A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has dismissed the notion that state governors will determine the outcome of the 2027 general elections, insisting that ultimate power lies with the electorate.

His comments come amid growing concerns within the opposition following the defection of several PDP governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 polls.

While acknowledging the political influence of governors, Sowunmi argued that their power does not equate to control over voters.

“Governors are important; I will not downplay that. But governors don’t make the totality of the electorate,” he said. “I have seen the holy anger of people topple nations. How much more is civic authority that people can exercise just by voting?”

He noted that the wave of defections has created a perception that the 2027 elections are already decided, but maintained that such assumptions are premature.

“It looks like it’s a done deal in the minds of some people, but I can guarantee you, if only PDP got out of court on time, things wouldn’t have been like this,” Sowunmi stated.

The PDP chieftain further predicted internal political upheavals across parties, including the ruling APC, particularly during the ticket selection process.

“You will be shocked at how many people, even in the present APC, will not get the ticket for what they want,” he said, adding that once campaigns commence, the strength and reach of the PDP would become evident.

Describing the PDP as a deeply rooted political institution, Sowunmi highlighted its long-standing presence and nationwide recognition.

“You will then understand what it means to be a 27-year-old political party with name recognition, grassroots restructuring, and strong image and logo identity,” he said.

Although he admitted dissatisfaction with the party’s current situation, Sowunmi expressed confidence in its historical role in Nigeria’s democracy...

Deep down, they know the truth and are still scared. APC had 25 governors in 2023 but Tinubu only won 6 APC states in the presidential elections.

In Anambra state for instance, Soludo wont be able to win his isuofia town for Tinubu, talkless of aguata LGA. Obi Cubana won't be able to win his Oba ward, that day he'll channel all the renewed hope funds towards ensuring that his brother wins house of reps seat for apga. Bianca has to first of all convince her husbands people before she can work miracles for Tinubu in nnewi town. All the south east govs will sneak into their covens, trying to save their nass candidate elections. If Tinubu fails to get 25 per cent in the SE states and has doubts in SS, where then can he convincingly win apart from the 4 states of the SW. His prayer should be that Obi shouldn't be on the ballot.

Whilst I agree that nothing is in the bag for APC despite governors detecting, thee, are two things I will like to mention.

1) In the history of our great country Nigeria, this is the most disorganised an opposition group as we've ever seen. The very worst by a country mile.

Opposition in Nigeria is useless granted, with backbiting and selfishness to the fore but this current mob are a mess the likes we've ever seen.

A paucity of decent candidates, so much so that someone like Dino is still considered some kind of player when he should have been consigned to the dustbin of history ages ago.

2) in your saying Governors have no influence, you might want to tell Obidients who till today will not let us rest because they claim Wike determined Rivers state presidential elections in 2023 with his sole influence.

Even Sowumi acknowledged that governors have great influence in determining the outcome of elections.

I don't think balablu is interested in winning the SE states. He just wants to get as many votes as possible in those 5 plots.

Most candidates who won got landslide votes in recent time ended up not winning the election. Obi and Jonathan (second tenure) is a perfect example.
I wonder why you thinks balablu will only win 4 states in the SW undecided. You think he will lose Lagos and osun abi grin?
Dey play grin..

Don't overdo estimate the SE votes, it has never won the presidential elections for any body.

Same Anambra state where Peter Obi lost his polling unit to APC just two months ago or another one? Recent developments indicate that Peter Obi is fading into oblivion as people see his constant defections as a sign of fear and cowardice. His electoral value is diminishing rapidly.

Now that their battle cry is southern solidarity nko? If he'd the vast north in the bag, then he'd ignore the SE votes. Now that he's worse than an orphan in the core north, do you think he'd gloss over votes from the SE? If that were so, why were there subtle attempts for Obi to snub the adc and the LP left in disarray? Because Tinubu knows that the circumstances have changed.

My brother, Obis candidates have been losing since 2017 as far as gov elections are concerned. In fact, in 2021, he lost 0-21 to Soludo, but just two years later in 2023, he won Anambra state in the presidential elections almost 100 percent.

I think I have to take the pains to lecture you a bit about elections landscape in Anambra in recent times. Governorship elections are owned by apga 100 percent. In fact, apga is even stronger than the APC is in Lagos. Apga is a creed that even Obi adheres to. But apgas power and control only stop at the state and local levels. In presidential elections, every voter keeps his apga affiliations in his wardrobe and votes whomever is best affiliated to their sentiments. This even extends to the SE as a whole.

There is nothing like core North.

APC will win North Central, they will most likely lose North East to Atiku and share North West votes as those ones don't particularly like Atiku.

APC will also clear South West and South South, so with three regions in the bag and one in play (North West), I don't think SE votes are as important to APC as you think.

Funny how this one confidently assumes something out of thin air and runs with that wild assumption as if it is an absolute, objective fact.

Tinubu would "clear" South South because of what exactly? He would win North Central because of what exactly? He would "share" North West with Atiku because "those ones don't particularly like Atiku...." Soo if they don't like Atiku, it is Tinubu they will like, why exactly?

The arrogance of these ridiculously baseless assumptions rankles.

Objectively, and you and others like you know it, the only region that Tinubu can "clear" is the South West, plus the North Central States of Kwara and Kogi. Full stop.

Anything else is just fishing for justifications for plotted rigging, manipulation and whatnot.

I want to believe this narrative in all fairness.

One greedy old man can't box the entire country in a confined space because of his selfish interests and expect the entire country to key into his personal gains using state Governors...

Electorates are the real goal
