Is Biafra A Mental Health Issue ? by KobolanderSegun(op):
The Original Biafra was Created by Emeka Ojukwu way back in the 1966

Why did Ojukwu Created Biafra.

There are so many stories from so many sources about what happened , Just so many stories with so many conflicting stories.

One story that is very real because so many people saw its impact was the Igbo were targeted for Killing in the North of Nigeria .

Close to 30,000 Igbo was systematically killed in the North.
At that same time even in Lagos the most accommodating place in Nigeria there were heated tensions between some Yoruba and Igbo. No death was recorded in Lagos but Reference to what was happening in the North was made during conflict between neighbors in Lagos.

Perhaps Ojukwu sensed Ndigbo could be whipped out in Genocide he Created Biafra as a means of Escape from Genocide.

After the war and everything cold down. Nigeria moved on and as usual Nigerians moved on. Ojukwu had been in self excile returned to Nigeria.

Why did Ojukwu return to Nigeria. Seperating Ojukwu from Nigeria would have been very hard since he was born and raised in the North of Nigeria. He was a real Nigerian.

Ojukwu entered into Nigerian Politics , And Ran for President of Nigeria, He got Married in Abuja which is in the North of Nigeria. Ojukwu married one of the Most Beautiful Women in World History, the very Beautiful Bianca Onoh who with Humility was The Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria, such humility from one of the Most Beautiful Women of All Time.

To understand Ojukwu Nigeria was in his Blood since he was born in the North of Nigeria. Our childhood shapes who we are.
Ojukwu was the Moses of the Igbo that Delivered them from what could have resulted into Genocide and Extinction.

When Ojukwu came back to Nigeria he spoke of a one Nigeria since the Igbo did not face systemic slaughter in the North.

Biafra was born out of physical survival . It was not a political tool.

Ojukwu granted so many interviews and did not clamour for Biafra because there was no Longer need for a Biafra. He said on so many occasions he was very proud of his role in Biafra.

Ojukwu was a Supreme Genius who few understood, they say he ran away, they say he came back. Ojukwu being alive to talk after the war is of extreme importance because it gives us a perspective of why there was a war and why there was a Biafra.

The damage Had already been done.

Despite Ojukwu's efforts to bring an End to all forms of Biafra this best efforts where not recognized by Ndigbo, Despite Ojukwu not being Bitter about the war his fellow Ndigbo harbored bitterness and taught their children bitterness about Nigeria.

Ojukwu a Man Betrayed by His follows.

Ojukwu was followed into the Biafra war by millions of Igbo who fought for their collective survival. Some people say Ojukwu acted too hastily, going by the mass killings in Palestine we can also say action has to be quick to halt death.

The Biafra Problem Today.

Despite Ojukwu closing shop on Biafra the Biafra shop has refused to close . Why ?

Ojukwu, A Man Betrayed by his own People.

Ojukwu was seen as a Hero like Moses but he was not seen as a Prophet or a philosopher which he was. Every one finds it easy to love people for bold action but very few see lesser action and even lesser listen to words.
Every Igbo man will tell you Ojukwu tried to break away from Nigeria but few will tell you how Ojukwu tried to bring Ndigbo back into Nigeria mentally.

When Awolowo who had been against Ojukwu and the Igbos, died, Ojukwu heaped praise on him calling Awolowo " The Greatest President Nigeria never had ". Sadly some young Ndigbo say Ojukwu should not have praised him. But in reality Awolowo is the Greatest President Nigeria never had. Ojukwu was simply stating a fact.

One would have thought Ojukwu running for President, getting married in a Church in Abuja would have gone a long way in ending the clamour for Biafra

The Real Problem
As I said earlier. Alot of People only see large actions and miss out the smaller actions

Ojukwu a man Betrayed by His Followers

It was the duty of the veterans who fought for Biafra to take on Ojukwu's Legacy and tell their children about Ojukwu to Let their children understand why they fought and why there is no longer a need to fight.

Sadly the Ndigbo elders only told their children one side of the story , why they fought.

Generations of Ndigbo walk around with Biafra in their heads because Biafra happened but their parents did not tell them " leave Biafra alone and come back to Nigeria "

Ojukwu left Biafra alone and came back to Nigeria. How many Ndigbo have the mental toughness to change their thinking ?

So when are going to enter Politics. It's a brilliant piece

Anambra State, is one of the most commercially vibrant states in southeastern Nigeria, has in recent years stood at the center of a prolonged socio-political crisis tied to the Monday *sit-at-home* protests. What began as a protest strategy by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) evolved into a weekly shutdown that deeply affected economic activity, security, and social cohesion across the South-East. When Charles Chukwuma Soludo assumed office as Governor of Anambra State in 2022, he inherited not only the economic burdens of governance but also the heavy task of restoring normalcy to a state gripped by fear every Monday.

Origins of the Sit-at-Home Order

The sit-at-home protest was introduced by IPOB as a non-violent civil resistance tactic aimed at demanding the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu. IPOB framed it as a symbolic show of solidarity urging residents of the South-East to stay indoors every Monday to demonstrate collective dissatisfaction with Kanu’s detention and Nigeria’s political structure.

Initially, IPOB maintained that participation was voluntary. However, over time, enforcement of the order became associated with threats, violence, and fear. Businesses that attempted to open were sometimes attacked, vehicles were burned, and individuals who defied the order risked intimidation. As a result, what began as a political statement gradually transformed into a climate of coercion in many communities.

Charles Soludo’s Firm Opposition

Upon assuming office, Governor Charles Soludo made it clear that the sit-at-home practice was economically destructive and socially unsustainable. As a former Central Bank Governor and respected economist, Soludo viewed the shutdown through the lens of economic productivity and long-term development.

Soludo publicly declared that Anambra State would no longer observe illegal sit-at-home orders. He consistently urged civil servants, traders, transporters, and students to resume normal Monday activities. He personally visited major markets—particularly Onitsha Main Market—on Mondays to encourage traders to open their shops, demonstrating confidence and solidarity.

His administration combined public persuasion with security reinforcement. The state government worked with security agencies to protect those willing to defy the shutdown. Soludo also warned that continued closure of government offices and markets could lead to administrative consequences.

In 2026, Soludo symbolically declared the end of the sit-at-home culture in Anambra State, marking what he described as the restoration of economic and civic normalcy. His strategy emphasized that no genuine liberation movement should cripple its own people economically.

IPOB’s Stand on the Matter

IPOB’s official position has been complex and, at times, contradictory. The organization initially insisted that the sit-at-home was a peaceful protest carried out voluntarily by supporters who loved and respected Nnamdi Kanu.

However, as violence increased and criticism mounted, IPOB leadership claimed that criminal elements were hijacking the sit-at-home order to cause chaos and discredit the movement. IPOB later announced the suspension—and eventually cancellation—of the Monday sit-at-home directive, arguing that it had achieved its symbolic purpose and that continued enforcement was harming the people.

The inconsistency in messaging—especially between different factions claiming loyalty to the Biafra cause—created confusion among residents. Some groups continued to enforce the order even after IPOB officially suspended it.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Position

Nnamdi Kanu, as IPOB’s leader, remains central to the movement’s identity. Initially, the sit-at-home protest was closely tied to his detention. However, reports later indicated that Kanu himself instructed that the weekly sit-at-home be suspended, stating that it was becoming counterproductive.

Kanu reportedly expressed concern that the protest was harming the same people it sought to defend. Despite his directive, enforcement persisted in some areas, suggesting internal fragmentation within pro-Biafra networks.

Thus, while the sit-at-home began as a show of loyalty to Kanu, its continuation beyond his own orders highlighted deeper structural issues within the movement.

Economic Decline in Anambra State

Anambra is a commercial powerhouse in southeastern Nigeria. Cities like Onitsha serve as major trading hubs connecting northern and southern markets. The weekly shutdown had severe economic consequences.

Loss of Revenue

Each Monday closure meant:

Markets shut down.
Banks suspended operations.
Transportation systems halted.
Schools closed.
Government offices remained empty.

Estimates suggested that billions of naira were lost weekly across the South-East. For Anambra alone, losses were projected in the tens of billions of naira every Monday due to halted trade and reduced commercial activity.

Investor Confidence

The sit-at-home crisis discouraged both local and foreign investment. Investors seek predictability and stability. Weekly enforced shutdowns signaled instability, pushing businesses to relocate to safer regions.

Supply Chain Disruption

Onitsha’s role as a distribution center means that closures disrupted supply chains nationwide. Delays in goods movement affected traders beyond the South-East.
Small Business Hardship

Small and medium-scale enterprises suffered disproportionately. Daily income earners—market women, transport workers, artisans—lost one full day of earnings every week. Over years, this significantly reduced household income.

Youth Unemployment

With businesses struggling and investments declining, job creation slowed. Youth unemployment worsened, indirectly contributing to further insecurity.

Human Cost: Igbo Lives Lost

Perhaps the most tragic dimension of the sit-at-home crisis has been the loss of human lives. Between 2021 and 2025, reports indicate that over 700 people many of them Igbo residents of the South-East lost their lives in incidents linked to sit-at-home enforcement and related violence. In Anambra alone, estimates suggest over 200 deaths occurred during this period.

These deaths resulted from:

Clashes between enforcement groups and security agencies.
Attacks on civilians who defied the order.
Retaliatory violence.
Broader insecurity fueled by the crisis.

The irony remains painful: a movement advocating for the protection and liberation of the Igbo people coincided with the deaths of hundreds of Igbo individuals.

Broader Social Consequences

Beyond economics and security, the sit-at-home crisis produced psychological and social trauma:

Fear became normalized every Sunday night.
Students experienced disrupted academic calendars.
Religious and social gatherings were limited.
Trust within communities eroded.

Families mourned loved ones, businesses collapsed, and a culture of uncertainty developed.

Governor Soludo’s strategy combined economic reasoning, public engagement, and security coordination. His insistence that Anambra must not sabotage itself economically resonated with many traders and civil servants.

By 2026, compliance with sit-at-home orders had significantly declined in Anambra State. Markets increasingly opened on Mondays, schools resumed full schedules, and commercial transport returned to operation.

However, critics argue that the broader political grievances that fueled IPOB’s emergence remain unresolved. Ending sit-at-home addresses the symptom but not necessarily the underlying tensions about marginalization, federalism, and representation in Nigeria.

---

### Conclusion

The sit-at-home protests in Anambra State represent a complex chapter in the region’s history—intertwining political agitation, economic disruption, and tragic loss of life. IPOB initially framed the protest as peaceful civil resistance. Nnamdi Kanu’s position evolved over time, eventually acknowledging the economic harm caused. Meanwhile, Governor Charles Soludo took a decisive stand to restore normalcy and economic stability in Anambra State.

The economic losses—running into trillions of naira across the South-East—and the deaths of more than 700 Igbo people underscore the heavy cost of prolonged instability. Anambra’s experience serves as a case study on how political protest, when extended or poorly controlled, can morph into economic self-sabotage.

As the state moves forward, the central challenge remains reconciliation: rebuilding trust, reviving commerce, ensuring security, and addressing legitimate grievances through peaceful democratic engagement rather than shutdowns that wound the very people they intend to protect.
