Happy Sunday guys, this have accusation of labeling me yahoo guy in the compound have happened on many occasions during compound meeting, side talks etc.

But I’m not to be sincere I’m a freelance website developer working from home, I have worked for lots of people even on this nairaland, within Nigeria and abroad at the comfort of my home.

What use to trigger this labeling is because most of my neighbors go out in the morning and come at night and I’m always indoor (at home) living good.

So this have been causing side talks and even confrontations from some neighbors.

Dude. You don't owe your life to anyone. Do you think there'll ever be a time when everyone would talk well of you or understand you perfectly?

People will always talk, regardless whether you're doing well or badly. Your measurement bar should be your conscience and your God if you are a believer. Since you're certain that you're not involved in crime or anything illegitimate, then you should care less what others say.

Everyone gets criticized, me, you, Tinubu, even Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammed. You can't change this fact.

So instead of hopping from compound to compound, focus on your hustle and forget about the NOISE!!

Apart from staying away... He also needs to subtly clear the rumor. anywhere he moves to, the rumor would likely still come up.he must always advertise or announce his online services. I'm saying this to avoid any frame up and extortion with law enforcement agents.

Invite some of them to come and see what you are doing explain to them while in your house how it works try to be little friendly why doing so

My advice is this save some money open an office and with that you can go out and com back in the evening or open another business to support the current one you are doing people has forgotten that we are not in 1965 since you are a young man and doing well the stigma will always be there

You must learn to align with your environment,

Look for an office to rent outside your home,many entrepreneurs like myself leave my house everyday to my office not because I can't work at home but because of the environment I find myself.

There's a saying that whenever fowls got lost in a compound it's the person that's always at home that will be ask about it whereabouts.

Look for an office,and leave your house for your office every morning

You want them to accept you as a good guy abi na nice guy.

Never explain what you do to people. Not even your neighbours...it is so wrong. You have nothing to prove to them. E dey pain me.

If you are social, try and make friends with a respectable security officer. If na army or DSS, e get why.

You need to move out of that location, not because you are guilty, but because your neighbours' level of thinking and exposure is below yours and you will always be at the losing end. Moving on, your target should be communities where people in tech reside or people that are well educated and exposed.

You are right. They might frame him up and put him into trouble. Having cleared himself,he can just leave. A police officer once said something on TV some years back that if you are living in a place where you either have the best car, best house, best bike or anything best it's better you leave. If people in a place see you as a dubious person, the hatred will be too much

I went through something similar...


Even online, a throll was following me and shouting yahoo boy up and down even though i never knew him or had any deal with him.

Some disgruntled people u av worked with will also come online to call you names and when u ask them to say what happened, they can't, they will start looking for one lie to add


Anyways I collected a shop and started a business. In less than a year, I collected another shop and started another different business and so i keep starting them until it became 7 and my wife advised against it.

I could only think of a way to grow Nd not a way to control how people see and perceive me.

I was living indoors 5 days straight in the past but now, I barely stay in one place.

We do similar job, web designing... Just try to establish a business outside Ur portfolio.

I have had similar experience.

I didn't know of the rumour until a neighbour boldly asked my wife 2 years ago if was a yahoo boy because they don't see me go to work.

To make it worse, I had 24/7 light and Internet at home which aligns with their stereotype of a yahoo boy

My advice is this save some money open an office and with that you can go out and com back in the evening or open another business to support the current one you are doing people has forgotten that we are not in 1965 since you are a young man and doing well the stigma will always be there

They are illiterate, but let's be honest, this yahoo thing started over ten years ago, with people working from private homes, be it in nigeria or oversease. Long before freelance work became a thing. That's why they his neighbours are suspicious. Everyone is used to the idea of yahoo boys working from home, no one is used to the idea of people legit working from home

Then there are the yahoo boys who point blank lie that they are doing legit work when asked.

In my compound we are 8 tenants 6 work from home or doing some sort of business. We don't care

My own they said am jobless say na woman dey feed me. I just dey laugh when they see me drinking beer and making merry.

I guess you are living in the midst of uncivilized neighbours. You even tried explaining to them but i.must tell you this, you go explain tire those jealous illiterates. Illiteracy doesn't necessarily mean not having education but been blind to development, modernization and innovation.

The best advise has been given to you already, since you are doing great. Find another apartment when your money expires cos the beef wouldn't stop and could lead to set up. It's terribly dangerous living around envious people. Look for another apartment and move in after your rent expires or talk with the landlord if he can repay your balance after moving out. Also, be considering getting your own place, you should plan buying an apartment or build a small place of your own.....Wish you goodness.....

You live in an extremely poor and illiterate neighborhood. Move, if God has blessed you.

Go and report them to the nearest police station. Make them come write how they came about the information. It may cost you like 20k but those rumors will die away.

I don't think you have heard the word "allegedly" from a law enforcement agency before?

I have been allegedly tagged a robber in my Estate before. They said I wore same color of cloths the robber wore. Before the estate chairman could come out to identify me, the police drove of with me, I slept in their custody, as a matter of fact I didn't know why I was arrested till I got to the station around 12am in the morning.

I still paid elephant naira for bail after they reviewed the CCTV and the Estate chairman came to the station to inform them they arrested a resident. I was still made to pay.
They apologized to me Infront of the my people, the chairman and my lawyer, took me back in to "clear" me and demanded N300k saying it's a robbery case. I just paid so I could get the Bleep out.
Went back to the UK 3 days later, when I returned I asked if the police were able to get the robbers. The chairman said the the victim of the robbery was afraid I would press charges so he told the police to back off the case.

Summary, I was arrested because of a shirt and short I wore......

Your case go long pass my own if them carry you.

It's not just a Nigerian police thing.
Even for UK, them go first carry you

Look for where to absorb you.
You look different from that environment.

There are places you will live, nobody cares if you are indoors 24 hours in a day and indoors through out the week,so long you don't draw attention to yourself.
