A renowned relationship coach and head of David Christian Centre, Pastor , has defended his Bible-inspired tattoo on his arm, describing it as a way of evangelism.

The tattoo, revealed in a video posted on Okonkwo’s official Instagram page on Saturday, bears the scripture John 3:16 in Roman numerals — “III: XVI.”

The clip, released in celebration of his 50th birthday, opens with a voice-over of the scripture, a verse widely regarded as central to the Gospel message.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Okonkwo wrote, “My religious brothers and sisters were busy judging over tattoo; they didn’t notice that the gospel (John 3:16) was preached to millions in 24hrs by almost all blogs.

“Anyway, we will share in details on Monday night. For now, please come to my praise party/thanksgiving service this Sunday @dcclagos on mainland & island. There will be food, fun, and praise.”

PUNCH Online had reported that the unveiling of the tattoo on Saturday drew mixed reactions online, with some critics questioning the appropriateness of a pastor sporting a tattoo.

One user, @iamqneth, wrote: “The Bible says we should not make a mark on our skin. Well, I know that the Bible hasn’t changed, and God’s word hasn’t changed either, so all I can say is hmmmm!”

Another commenter, @sailorojay, added: “It baffles me. Does this pastor not know it’s a sin to tattoo his skin? As a pastor, you should be leading members in the right path with what the Bible teaches.”

Some offered more measured perspectives. @v_olarinde commented: “All things are lawful… but not all things edify. I respect you so much, sir, but this doesn’t edify.”

However, many followers praised the tattoo as a creative act of faith. @nnekaekpe wrote: “Tatted!!!!! ‘And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.’” Another user, @sheunnatural, joked: “Now I can get my tattoo. My mentor gbe mi debe,” loosely translating to “My mentor got me there.” Others simply commented: “I love it.”

Known for his contemporary approach to relationship and marriage teachings and his youth-friendly messaging, Okonkwo continued to share photos from his birthday celebrations, captioning one post: “Still celebrating the big Five 0.”

Addressing the growing debate, the pastor advised followers to stay calm.

“Those who want to hear about tattoos, drink water and relax. We will talk on Monday after the parties this weekend,” he added.

Okonkwo’s explanation framed the tattoo as a bold, unconventional way to spread the Gospel, turning what some saw as controversy into a conversation about creative evangelism.

I always tell people that Nigerians are gullible people especially those their pastors, and church owners… they preach convenience to you….without listening to them you’ll still achieve what you’re supposed to achieve… Christianity has zero impact on your life as a person except becoming vulnerable to yourself.

Instead of preaching salvation, preach and teach your followers how to be financially secure and independent because at the end of every church service you demand their money in the name of offering and tithes

Tattoo isn't a taboo, in Africa, our forefathers had tattoos ....

But today's religion is changing so many things and I don't even know why we don't read the Bible rather we get discouraged by people who wants to change the scriptures to befit their interest.

Was it not Christianity that helped shaped the United States 🇺🇸 and the Founding Fathers called it a nation under God? Today globally, they’re a benchmark for development and the USD is global legal tender. A nation founded under the principles of Christianity.
