Have you ever seen people drinking local gin from a bottle containing snake before? It is common among the riverine people of Southern Nigeria, especially, the Ijaws and Urhobos. They call it snake wine.

People take it for different reasons. Some take it for protection against snake bite, while others take it with the belief that it prevents snakes from coming close to them or harming them.

HOW IT IS DONE: It is usually done with a live snake forced into a bottle. Dead snakes are not used. Then local gin is poured into the bottle. The strong nature of the gin kills the snake and the bottle is shaken vigorously with the snake inside. It is then served by pouring into glass cups for everyone to enjoy.

I have seen it several times. Some years back, I was offered a glass, but I refused because I looked into the bottle and saw scale particles of the snake floating in the drink, and I became irritated.

Farmsolution:
This is not true oga. These are snakes soaked into different preservatives and chemical majorly for practicals purposes in schools and research centers . Which one is snake wine. Go to first generation schools and you will see them in their biology laboratories.
You must be a kid or an ignorant adult. If you don't understand things, you learn. Do you think we created this thread to discuss WAEC Biology practical here? I am very sure you rushed to comment without reading the post thoroughly. Did you see the write ups from Google attached to my post by the moderator or not? Sometimes, some of you who claim you are so enlightened end up making a fool of yourself because you prefer talking to learning. Na only you sabi snakes wey dey inside bottle for inside science lab. We didn't attend school. You are the only one that attended school.

It depends on what the people who take it believe in. If they feel it can protect them against snake bite, then that is their belief, but for me, I cannot take it because I believe in lab tested antivenom.

No, I've never drunk from a bottle with a snake in it and never will.

I was once offered tequila in Mexico City though, and was told the gold in it would make me goldy, and I failed to convince the foøl offering it that the gold colouring was either caramel coloring, sugar-based syrup, or oak extract added to unaged silver tequila.

What annoyed was being asked to pay above the odds for it, because it pretty much sounded like a babalawo asking for payment in advance for juju money instead of afterwards with the juju money.

I doubt I could be convinced a drink with a snake in it would immunize one to snake bites, but if anyone wants to prove me wrong ..........

I do not see any connection between a bottle of gin containing snake and antivenom.

Neither do I. Nor do I see how a gold coloured drink would make one goldy even if it is believed it might.

All of you commenting, "They said it does this, it does that… bla bla bla," They did not tell you exactly what it's used for, and they might never tell you because they know when they do, you won't be careful of a certain act anymore.

So to think it serves as an anti venom, or doesn't allow snakes come near you, bla bla bla is highly laughable.

When I see self acclaimed woken-people condemning herbs , I just shake my head . What sustained your great great great grandparents is what you ediots are condemning . While in the university , I visited an Old herbal man with this type of wines in his cabinets . If you drink this , you will be insusceptible to snake bite no matter how long it takes tho they are of different types and they have their different works they do . Tho, modern treatments is not bad, but we shouldn't forget our roots . The man told me that the easiest work for a herbalist is to treat a person bitten by snake no matter how long the venom might have stayed in his /her system as long as the person is not dead already . Rip to the girl killed by that stupid snake .

Extremely rare & very strange indeed.
Snakes generally shy away from humans, unless you carelessly stumble upon it in the bush or its territory.

Snake wine is neither new nor strange as it originated during the Zhou dynasty that lasted from 1046-771 BC (before Christ), and since then, it's still around and going strong.

How to make snake wine is pretty simple, if you are the type that can handle snakes. First of all, a bottle of wine is brought, in this case rice wine or some other grain wine is the preferred choice; afterwards, a live snake is forced into the liquid and sealed for months, during which the snake dies (sometimes. More on that later), leaving behind a reptilian-tasting and allegedly medicinal solution behind.

Optionally, you can choose to have a shot of snake wine directly from a live snake if you don't want to wait for it to stew for months in a bottle. In this case, a snake is brought, killed in your presence and its blood and bile are mixed with alcohol which is consumed on the spot. This is referred to as mixed snake wine while the ones where the snakes are placed in bottles are called steeped snake wine.

Sometimes, other creatures and herbs are added to the mix in order to make it more potent or attractive to customers. Such creatures or herbs include scorpions, geckos, more than one snake or ginseng roots.

An obvious question that must be nagging you by now is, "don't the venomous snakes and scorpions make the wine poisonous?" and "Is it safe to drink?". The answer you'll get is "yes" to both questions because it is alleged that the alcohol is capable of neutralising the venom, therefore rendering the wine safe to drink. In fact, some say the venom is the most important part of the recipe!

I wish to take it someday soon. I've only heard of it but never seen it.

Well there's a chance of ingesting the venom in small, safe doses (rendered non-fatal by the ethanol) – which can then offer some protection. If vaccines can work like that, maybe snake venom can, who knows.

I've seen this, when my peers drink, i don't.

It is said that when one drink's this, snake's will smell you easily as one of theirs kind of cammo stuff

There are different types with different types of snake's or even one big bottled Gin with different species of venomous snake's.
