PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE ABUJA

CLARIFICATION ON RECENT EVENTS REGARDING THE CASE OF LATE IFUNANYA LUCY NWANGENE

We wish to address the circulating discussion on social media concerning the unfortunate case of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who tragically passed away due to neurotoxic complications following a snake bite on January 31, 2026.

First and foremost, we express our deepest condolences to the Nwagene family during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of a loved one is never easy, and our thoughts are with them.

We want to clarify that the management team at Federal Medical Centre, Abuja acted promptly and with the utmost care upon Ms. Nwagene's arrival. Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom.

After a thorough but quick evaluation, it was clear that Ms. Nwagene suffered severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite. Despite all efforts to stabilize her condition and transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment, she experienced a sudden deterioration just before the transfer. Our team of professionals worked diligently to provide CPR and other life-saving measures; however, despite these efforts, we were unable to revive her.

We stand by the quality of care and dedication our team demonstrates daily. The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation. We are committed to transparency and integrity in our practices and will continue to pursue excellence in patient care.

In light of these events, we encourage our community to engage with credible sources for information and updates rather than relying on social media speculation. We remain available for any further inquiries or clarifications.

Thank you for your understanding.

DR. BIOKU MUFTAU,
HEAD OF CLINICAL SERVICES
FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE, ABUJA
1st February 2026.

Writing all these medical jargons to bamboozle us doesn't change the fact that most Government-owned hospitals are very nonchalant when it comes to attending to Nigerians, especially ones requiring emergency medical attention.
A lot of their doctors are always disgruntled, angry and rude. Only a few remain calm and well behaved.
My last experience at the Lagos State General Hospital wasn't very pleasant at all. I just feel the current Nigeria is frustrating the hell out of every Nigerian.

Dem don quickly arrange antivenom keep for the hospital in case anybody wants to go and verify. Wicked people.

Wike could spend billions on ICC, VP residence and in building Judge’s quarters but not fixing basic healthcare nor education.

And such a man is some people’s hero.

May Ifunanya’s fate befall all of you.
Re: FMC Abuja Reacts To Death Of Ifunanya Nwangene by Dogalmighty17: 10:52pm On Feb 01
Providing CPR on a snake bite victim? This only further pushes the venom deeper into the body.
The first question any competent medical professional will ask is, what kind of snake bit her? This will quickly narrow down and pinpoint the most effective anti-venom for that particular kind of snake.

The shameful disgrace of Nigeria is that the whole federal capital territory doesn't have a centre equipped with anti-venom that any hospital across Abuja can call and have it available in minutes.

Abuja is expanding. It is inevitable that this expansion will reach areas that certain wildlife have long regarded as home. These displaced animals, snakes inclusive, start entering residential areas. The case of the Airforce personnel who got bitten by a snake that crawled through her soak-away into her toilet, is fresh in memory. Her house was built in a freshly claimed area.

Yet just a 45 minute drive from Abuja, along the Abuja-Keffi expressway, is a snake farm owned by a retired Chief of Army staff. The most evil CAS this country has ever had. Snake venom is steadily harvested from that farm and shipped abroad.

it's written there polyvalent antivenom was given.
And snake is said to be neurotoxic meaning it can cause paralysis and also heart attack causing death immediately .some snakes are very dangerous ooo, it venom does not give enough time before it kills it's victim.and majority of the drugs in our market also aren't 💯 % potent/legit.may God Almighty comfort her family.I just returned from camp and the night before leaving the camp I was so scared of snake bite because of the nature of accommodation they kept us in.U will see lizards entering the room anyhow.

Na so...APC arm of the hospital has responded. Whenever a Nigerian public institution respond this fast to current affairs, know that something really happened. But then, they also could be right.

Listen to the man talk as if he's talking to tinubu's supporters who are always ready to lick his dripping saliva.
You claimed you administered antivenin, yet she died.
Are you not guilty of negligence and incompetence like the failure of Aso Rock?
I sincerely think the medical director should be sacked.
And it's well known nothing will happen to him, because the C O W A R D L Y yòrubá president does not have the balls, as they are missing since he was selected and imposed on the populace.

I'm almost always on the side of our hospitals not properly funded and equipped, this is definitely the reason many Nigerians who read the news will quickly believe the hospital lacked the necessary provisions to save her, I read she drove herself to the hospital, what I know is that bite victims should limit movement to near zero, and that tying a cloth doesn't help, these could have made the spread faster.
Very unfortunate, would have been better if rapid response was possible by just dialling a number, but we still don't have such provisions in Nigeria, she did her best, but then sometimes that's not enough, may the universe not let us be unfortunate, if we must be unfortunate, let it be the kind whose tales we live to tell.

That's why we need to be careful of bloggers and sensational news.

The truth is even with antovenom, once there is already CNS complications there is not much one can do.

May she RIP
