Providing CPR on a snake bite victim? This only further pushes the venom deeper into the body.
The first question any competent medical professional will ask is, what kind of snake bit her? This will quickly narrow down and pinpoint the most effective anti-venom for that particular kind of snake.

The shameful disgrace of Nigeria is that the whole federal capital territory doesn't have a centre equipped with anti-venom that any hospital across Abuja can call and have it available in minutes.

Abuja is expanding. It is inevitable that this expansion will reach areas that certain wildlife have long regarded as home. These displaced animals, snakes inclusive, start entering residential areas. The case of the Airforce personnel who got bitten by a snake that crawled through her soak-away into her toilet, is fresh in memory. Her house was built in a freshly claimed area.

Yet just a 45 minute drive from Abuja, along the Abuja-Keffi expressway, is a snake farm owned by a retired Chief of Army staff. The most evil CAS this country has ever had. Snake venom is steadily harvested from that farm and shipped abroad.

That's why we need to be careful of bloggers and sensational news.

The truth is even with antovenom, once there is already CNS complications there is not much one can do.

May she RIP
Her brother was the one giving account. He was on the phone with her according to the statement and she was fine. One of the doctors untied the tie she used to slow down the venom and she immediately lost consciousness soon after. Let FMC interview the brother and stop releasing statements. Tinubu need to ensure an investigation is carried out and all the heads of the departments where services are lacking are immediately sacked and charged.

From the Nigerian perspective, it's not just money, they are also asking for better facilites. But more often than not, the media focuses on the money issue.
From United Kingdom to France, from Nigeria to Germany, from Canada to Australia, those greedy professionals are always on strike.
UK doctors go on strike for well, salaries, and also for conditions of service. Which can get stressful at times.

Many citizens are in debt in America as a result of the exorbitant charges by the greedy doctors
While it is true that the USA does charge exorbitantly

1.Medical doctors in the USA take out very huge loans to pay for their studies. Remember that in the USA, a medical degree is a postgraduate degree. So, to become a doctor there..its 4 years of university, then 4 years of medical school. Debts from the loans can be as high as 150000 dollars . If they are not paid very well, they would be broke and unable to afford even basic costs of living.

2. Also, the US Is the world leader in medical research and treatments. Cutting edge costs a lot of money. Cutting edge medications and protocols cost a lot of money

3.USA also has very high standards for its hospitals...this is not your average nigerian hospital, this is a hospital where a common ward can look like a high grade ICU ward in Nigeria. All that costs a lot of money.

4.Malpractice. Because doctors can be sued for anything in the USA...they carry something called malpractice insurace...which costs a lot of money. (While some of the doctors are sued justly, some are sued for frivolous reasons..eg Ben carson being sued for a surgery that literally saved the patient's life)

. But they won't try that nonsense in China
Doctors have gone on strike in china , also on protests as well.

The problem with China is that doctors are not allowed to unionize. That makes going on strike very difficult. (Here in Nigeria, doctors that work for private hospitals can't go on strike for the same reason).

, North Korea
1.North Korea is the kind of country that any meeting to even express dissatisfaction with the government can get you sent to jail for life...in a remote prision camp, with your family members, including extended family members

Imagine trying to organise a strike, any strike in that country.

2. North Korean medical practice is really really godawful. It's so bad.

How bad is it? A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea across the border, and was shot by his colleagues as he did so. When he was operated upon by a South Korean doctor, who was 58 years old at the time (it's important)...the doctor found tapeworms and other worms in the intestine of the soldier. The last time he saw such things was in a medical textbook as a medical student over three decades previous.

or Russia because they know the consequences
Russian doctors have organised protests and even strikes. Putin is not that autocratic as you think he is.

Well, she was bitten by a cobra. Tying the limb won't work in this case. Infact research shows it would do more harm than good.

Cobra bites also can be very quicky fatal. Even if everything right is done

Nothing like fake news, I just pray you don't have to experience the rot in our medical system at any point because you will be disappointed by what you are defending out of political or tribal sentiment if the Nigerian medical system is at its best as you claim, how come 99 percent of our leaders and their family members run to get treatment abroad ?

But in this case the hospital did do the appropriate response, y'know. Nothing called tribalism here....she died because cobra envenomation can still be fatal even when all that can be done is done.

Tying the limb slows down the poison. The only negative is that you may lose the limb. But in a country where doctors, nurses and pharmacists are doing harm even when they swore oaths not to, she has no choice than to lose a limb to save her life if possible.

The brother said once they released the tie, she lost consciousness. Before that, she was on the phone with him. Should they not have treated her first before untying if they know what they are doing? So you expect people in remote area to just lay down and die if they are bitten? Of course, they will tie the limb to prevent the venom from traveling and killing them.
Re: FMC Abuja Reacts To Death Of Ifunanya Nwangene by Kasteddy: 1:49am On Feb 02
Stop displaying your ignorance stupidly. Snake bite isn't a contraindication to administer CPR. & the hospital has told you that they administered a polyvalent antivenom which is broad-spectrum & neutralizes venoms from multiple snake species. Asking about the snake species may not even be of much help in this instance as the patient & relatives may not even know the species or may not have seen the snake. Again, the medical practitioner isn't a trained vet that he'd know all species of snakes. Also, you may need to find out how neurotoxic venoms work so you'd understand how & why the victim died. Just to aid you, that venom paralyzes the muscles including those for respiration. So it's most likely that the victim had breathing difficulties which would have led to respiratory failure. A smart person would have asked how long it took her to get to get to the hospital as some snake venoms are quite swift in action.

Actually, tying the limb doesn't 'slow down the poison'

As put (with a little help from AI...)

Why tying the limb may be harmful.

Aggravates tissue damage: Most cobra venoms (especially spitting cobras) have a significant cytotoxic (tissue-destroying) effect. A tourniquet concentrates the venom in the affected area, leading to severe local damage, necrosis, and a higher risk of amputation.

Ineffective for venom transport: Venom is primarily transported through the lymphatic system, not major blood vessels, especially in the initial hours after a bite. A standard, tight tourniquet cuts off arterial blood flow, which causes tissue death but does not effectively stop the lymphatic spread.

Risk of shock upon release: If a tight tourniquet is applied for a long time, the sudden rush of concentrated venom into the general circulation when it is loosened at the hospital can cause a severe drop in blood pressure and shock
At best, she should have been immobilized and transported to a hospital with adequate facilites

Read this on the best practice for snake bite first aid

P.S : The fact that a patient can be on the phone with someone does not exclude their being critically ill. I once observed a patient with pulmonary embolism (diagnosed) who when brought in, apart from the fact that he was on oxygen, was cheerfully gisting with nurses in the emergency while waiting to be taken to the ICU. Of course his condition eventually deteriorated in one hour (by then he was enroute to ICU). He recovered fully.

fergie001:
PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE ABUJA

CLARIFICATION ON RECENT EVENTS REGARDING THE CASE OF LATE IFUNANYA LUCY NWANGENE

We wish to address the circulating discussion on social media concerning the unfortunate case of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who tragically passed away due to neurotoxic complications following a snake bite on January 31, 2026.

First and foremost, we express our deepest condolences to the Nwagene family during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of a loved one is never easy, and our thoughts are with them.

We want to clarify that the management team at Federal Medical Centre, Abuja acted promptly and with the utmost care upon Ms. Nwagene's arrival. Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom.

After a thorough but quick evaluation, it was clear that Ms. Nwagene suffered severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite. Despite all efforts to stabilize her condition and transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment, she experienced a sudden deterioration just before the transfer. Our team of professionals worked diligently to provide CPR and other life-saving measures; however, despite these efforts, we were unable to revive her.

We stand by the quality of care and dedication our team demonstrates daily. The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation. We are committed to transparency and integrity in our practices and will continue to pursue excellence in patient care.

In light of these events, we encourage our community to engage with credible sources for information and updates rather than relying on social media speculation. We remain available for any further inquiries or clarifications.

Thank you for your understanding.

DR. BIOKU MUFTAU,
HEAD OF CLINICAL SERVICES
FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE, ABUJA
1st February 2026.

Nigeria is all about talks and no actions.

Reading the reply, one would think that she was treated in John Hopkins University Medical Center until you visit the FMC Emergency unit. The grammar never match the operations. The lackadaisical attitude of medical staff is despicable. Thank God that the air we breathe is not under the control of a Nigerian.

The cause of the death of this young blood is simply CORRUPTION!
Corruption is a multifaceted phenomenon which unfortunately have become a culture on our society.
The solution to corruption is mind reengineering by all citizens then we can reposition our society for the benefits of all.

My heart goes out to the family of the deceased as I wish her RIP.
It's she today, who knows who's next?
Let's kill corruption in our society by reengineering our minds.

May God help us on Jesus name

You can take solace in your ignorance by blaming the wrong people. Don’t hold the system and people responsible for managing the system accountable. Don’t vote right.

If you have a snake envenomation ( among a few other emergencies), just know it’s almost a certain death. Not because your healthcare provider is wicked, but because it may not be available.

Your healthcare system is DEAD.

From watching movies from my childhood till now. The first cure for snake bite is sucking the region of the bite to reduce the spread of venom.
