A few years ago at the hostel we were having a discussion with our security guard. One topic led to another and we eventually started talking about snakes.

He told us that he had charms that could prevent snake bites and traditional medicine that could neutralize snake venom. At first I thought he was joking but later someone from the community confirmed that it was true.
There is power in the chants no doubt!
A few months later something shocking happened. A woman who lived close to our hostel raised an alarm that there was a snake in the engine room of her house. It wasn’t just any snake - it was a cobra. While we were searching for sticks to kill it one of the security man’s children walked in casually and caught the snake alive. A ten-year-old boy for that matter. Na dat day I believe say juju dey real.


Later the man told me privately that he could prepare the charm for me, saying that even the deadliest snake in the world would look like an earthworm to me. But the “church boy” spirit in me then didn't allow me do it.


Now as things stand I’m beginning to think I might have to travel and visit my guy.

Give the person an onions to eat,

Then use a charcoal to place on the spot where the snake has beaten the person and watch as the charcoal takes the poison out of the body of the person and after about 20 minutes he will be very fit to go his way.

We have been overwhelmed with snake bite information particularly what to do or solution to follow in case one is bitten by snake. I think prevention is the best strategy. For some of us that our houses are very close to bush or located in new sites, rearing pet cat can safe us from snake incidence. I simply carried out a research by rearing a pet cat in my house that is very close to bush area as I use part of the land for farming and I discovered that due to the presence of our cat, snakes are no where to be found . This is a place where we normally see snakes very often before we started rearing the pet cat. A simple analysis of you-tube documentary on fights between cat and snake can provide more reasons why snakes fear cat.

Scorpion doesn't kill. Its just pain, and it will slowly go afterwards.
