Over 54% Of Minors Buy Alcohol Themselves — NAFDAC Survey by adenigga(op): 4:50pm On Feb 03
More than half of minors and underaged persons in Nigeria obtain alcoholic beverages by themselves, a survey conducted by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has shown.

The study revealed that 54.3 per cent of persons under 18 years buy alcoholic beverages themselves from various sources, raising concerns over underage drinking and easy access to alcohol.

Titled Underage Drinking and Abuse of Alcohol: Access to Alcohol and Frequency of Consumption, the survey was released on Tuesday by the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

It examined the extent of alcohol abuse among underaged persons through a national survey of consumers and retailers of alcoholic beverages and wines.

According to the study, alcohol is “one of the most widely used substances of abuse among youths” and a “growing public health concern in Nigeria.”

The research involved 1,788 respondents from six states representing Nigeria’s geopolitical zones: Gombe (North East), Kaduna (North West), the Federal Capital Territory (North Central), Anambra (South East), Lagos (South West) and Rivers (South South).

Respondents were categorised by age: minors (below 13 years), underaged (13–17 years) and adults (18 years and above).

Findings showed that minors and underaged persons accessed alcohol through multiple channels.

“While 54.3 per cent procure it themselves, 49.9 per cent obtain it from friends and relatives, and 45.9 per cent from social gatherings,” the survey stated.

Among those who bought alcohol themselves, 49.9 per cent patronised retailers selling drinks in sachet packs and PET bottles, while smaller proportions purchased from liquor stores (15.4 per cent), restaurants (12.6 per cent) and supermarkets (7.9 per cent).

The study further detailed procurement preferences, noting that “47.2 per cent of minors and 48.8 per cent of the underaged procured drinks in sachets, while 41.2 per cent of minors and 47.2 per cent of the underaged procured drinks in PET bottles.

“About 27.6 per cent of the underaged procured alcohol in glass bottles,” it added.

On consumption patterns, the survey found that 54.0 per cent of respondents were occasional drinkers, 24.0 per cent consumed alcohol daily, while 11.0 per cent drank alcohol at least once a week.

Among minors and the underaged, occasional drinking was predominant at 63.2 per cent for minors and 54.0 per cent for the underaged.

Daily consumption was reported by 9.3 per cent of minors and 25.2 per cent of underaged persons, while weekly intake was recorded among 11.3 per cent of minors and 9.4 per cent of the underaged.

The study highlighted policy implications, noting that “access to alcohol by children can be limited if pack sizes that can be easily concealed are not available.”

It concluded that banning small pack sizes, such as sachets and bottles below 200 millilitres, could help reduce underage drinking.

The survey also called for increased vigilance by parents, teachers, religious leaders and communities, urging them to treat alcohol consumption among children and adolescents as a serious public health concern.

NAFDAC is not lying. Just enter any beer parlour or kiosk and you’ll see small boys buying alcohol like pure water. Nobody checks age here. Enforcement is the real problem, not lack of laws. Until sellers start facing serious consequences, this thing won’t stop.

Though the survey doesn’t indicate a perfect outcome, it underscores ongoing challenges in underage alcohol access, despite NAFDAC’s efforts to raise awareness and enforce regulations.

I have watched so many foreign movies including Shazam,
Alcohol can be sold anywhere but U must sow an identity card that proves U are 18 and above,
America will not bann alcohol, even if underage forge their identity, U forging identity is Ur problem and will be arrested if caught,
In America they will never bann , they will only request for Ur identity before it can be sold to u,
Nigerian government don't know their job, it's only to steal they know,
Alcohol is not Nigerian problem,
Fix this shitty country and every one will be sane

Who is the irresponsible brother/sister that sends a minor on such wicked errand?

Both the brother/sister and seller should rot in jail.

It's a very disgusting yet prevalent sight.

Junior secondary children and even primary school especially those in public schools have become drunkards and junkies.

We're sitting on a time bomb but our government and policy makers couldn't care less about our schools.

This is one of the biggest reasons I dislike all our politicians. Everyday, Ademila Adeleke's sister's grandchild is driven to school in a car that is escorted with two other buses. Yet, just across the road there are little public school children in shredded uniforms.

These children are hopeless and will generally become public nuisance. But hey, our politicians need that constant supply of hopeless youths to help them disrupt elections.

How can any sane person see this sight and like any politician.

Firstly, are you really using a movie to give life lessons. I'll note your moniker and be careful to disregard anything you say henceforth.

Secondly, America is never a yardstick for morality. Epstein country?!

Thirdly, alcohol is one of Nigeria's biggest problems. It fries braincells amd triggers irresponsible spending and criminal behaviour.

It is better you allow the selling of sachet drinks. Banning it will lead to increased taking of hard drugs which is more dangerous.
Re: Over 54% Of Minors Buy Alcohol Themselves — NAFDAC Survey by Nobody: 9:55pm On Feb 03
We are in support of the ban on sachetizatation of alcohol.

The mini packs encourage bingeing of alcohol and ease of concealment in official and high risk areas
Stop it now!!!
