Why Power Trips Off Whenever It Rains In Nigeria by Ishilove(op): 4:12pm On Feb 03
Someone complained on X that there had been no power in Ikorodu since it rained, and a social media handle called Nigerian National Grid explained the reason why power goes off anytime it rains. At least in Nigeria. I don't know how it is in other countries

THIS IS FOR SAFETY.

When heavy rain is coming, DisCos sometimes switch off supply on purpose. Water and live electricity don’t mix. If rain gets into weak connections, leaking transformers, or exposed wires, it can cause sparks, fires, or even electrocution. It’s usually better to take the power off briefly than risk lives or damage that could keep an area in darkness for days.

Another issue is the network itself. Most power lines in Nigeria are overhead, hanging on poles across streets and neighbourhoods, and a lot of them are old. When it rains, water finds its way into cracked insulators, rusty joints, or damaged cables. Once that happens, the system automatically trips to prevent something bigger, like a transformer blowing or a substation going down.

Rain also comes with wind and lightning. Lightning can send a strong surge into the lines, while wind can bring down branches or make wires clash. When that happens, the system cuts supply to protect itself.

Power isn’t usually switched off everywhere at once when it rains.

The grid is broken into feeders and zones. Some areas are taken off supply because they’re more exposed or already have known faults, while others stay on.

Also, if the rain isn’t causing faults on a particular feeder and there are no risk factors, there may be no reason to shut it down.

I used to be pissed off about it, but now I understand safety first. There are also cases where poles would fall down and electrocute people. It is better to turn it off for a few hours. Everybody go dey alright.

What kind of shameless explanation is this? undecided

Oh God!

I always regret being a Nigerian. What kinda lame excuse is this? Na only Nigeria rain dey fall?

If not for corruption Nigeria won't be regarded as a third world country by now. We have the resources to compete with developed countries in terms of development but these criminals in government won't let it happen.

How do they then explain the power outage that last for days after the rainfall even when no damage was done by the rain
Re: Why Power Trips Off Whenever It Rains In Nigeria by Jakarta: 5:51pm On Feb 03
I don't blame discos from switching power off when it rains. Many homes don't have circuit breakers and thunder resistants these can lead to disaster is there is no power outage.

I remembered October last year when it rained thunder and brimstone, even with a power outage I heard a very loud gunshot like noise from my AC, the circuit breaker in my room was immediately triggered and everything went off, 2 electric poles powering an industrial line collapsed on a church, an S&P cable from a transformer fell on the ground, with water everywhere.

With water being a good conductor of electricity I couldn't imagine the disaster that would have happened that day if there was no power outage.

How come other countries don't switch theirs off? A terribly bad workman will always blame his tools. These folks in the power industry should quit disgracing themselves

Rubbish. These are issues that competent engineers in advanced economies have long handled. We can't keep making excuses for failure

Other countries that have uninterrupted power supply, it doesn't rain over there abi😡 embarassed embarassed. In December, they told us the reason why there was poor electricity supply was that a pipe in escravos supplying gas to gencos was faulty, they claimed they fixed it in January 2026, till now, we only have less than two hours light every two days in my area embarassed

These are things Electricity regulatory commission or company should be inspecting before every house is built if things were working.

Kai! If person never travel abroad and dem dey give am this explanation na so him go dey nod head for lamba.

Nigeria is one of the few countries worldwide without stable electricity. In fact, most of the world now have stable electricity. Nigeria is not the only country with overhead power lines, even the US still uses overhead lines. In many countries, even smaller countries, electricity keeps running even in rain, snow, and even during war in Gaza and Ukraine they still had stable power until air strikes.

We celebrate mediocrity too much abeg

You didnt even ask if its a standard practice rather you just accept what ever lame explanation a media person without any engineering knowlodge is feeding you. Why is there always light in other countries even if its rains or raining? And there is light sometimes in Nigeria when its raining

Is only in Nigeria that you will hear excuses like this
Re: Why Power Trips Off Whenever It Rains In Nigeria by nairalanda1(m): 6:40pm On Feb 03
Nigerian cities could create large sewage systems where the power lines could run underground to prevent this from happening.

Also, simply run the power lines underground. May cost money, but would prevent this from happening.

I don't need to ask. It is what is obtainable in Nigeria. Go to other countries and experience their engineering or take over IKEDC and overhaul it with your superior knowledge.

Its because they have no underground wiring so what do they expect. Even in 2026, they are still using archaic wiring system

Leave them, they know what they are doing.
The most corrupt ministry after politicians and nnpc.

This is a huge load of bullshit

So why does light go off when it's not raining

As far as we are still reciting a for apple, no plan of moving forward in this country

Instead of them to meet people like us, they are there doing stone age things.

The number one reason I was expecting to hear is lightning strike, as most return path to earth in this country is rubbish.
