From the early 90s to around 2003, one common way of watching movies was through movie rental shops where you could register with a small amount of money, and obtain access to movies (both local and foreign).

Na this movie rental shop, popularly called 'video club' we take rent movies like Issakaba, Suicide Mission, Died Wretched: Buried in 2.5m Casket, Sakobi, Samadora, Karishika, Glamour Girls, Battle of Muzanga, Igbudu, Uncle Wayward, Rituals, Mr Ibu, Common Man, Aki Na Ukwa, Osuofia In London, End of the Wicked, and a host of others.

We also rented foreign movies like Delta Force (Chuck Norris), Nam Angels, Jungle Rat, Cyborg (Van Damme), Return From The River Kwai, The Never Ending Story, Escape From Sobibor, The Rock (Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery), Titanic, The Wizard of Oz, Jack the Giant Killer, Sinbad and the Seven Seas, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts, etc.

Kai, I feel so nostalgic to see those movies again.

My sister had one in the 2000's...

She made a lot of money then renting movies and selling/distribution in bulk to retailers.

The business became shaky in the late 2000s with the arrival of cable tv and crashed completely much later with stronger reception of people to Internet movies- tiktok, you tube.

It was very solid business at the time. She built a bakery and a restaurant from it. I used to go to her shop to help out then when I came home for holidays!

You have a business oriented sister yet you didn't learn anything about business from her. Very shameful, my friend.

Upper Iweka Onitsha and Idumota Lagos really help create the real nollywood. Back then nollywood movies where unpredictable and worth the time.

Now, a thousand films will be produced, same story line. rich man fall in love with poor woman or vice versa. Thats all.

How hotest things just disappear like they never were.
Only change is constant.

I remember they interviewed Bill Gates then and he said there'd soon be no need to have physical videos because everything would be online.
It sounded so ridiculous at the time.
HOW do they KNOW these things??!!

Wetin dey always pain be me say, you rent a movie that has part 1 and part 2. They only have part one and they told you someone rented part 2 so you have to come back to rent part 2 when you are done with part 1.
When you finally get access to part 2, they have rented the CD to the extent that it's cracking making the part 2 not interesting to watch.

Re: Throwback: Do You Still Remember Movie Rental Shops? (Picture) by CaseSensitive(m):
I remember renting these VCDs for free because I talked about Arsenal with the owner of the rental club - a staunch Arsenal fan who thought I was also an Arsenal fan. He didn’t realise I was more of a fair-weather Manchester United supporter at the time. Most days, I barely even cared about football. I just wanted those VCDs for free man. Good old days.
