General Olusegun Obasanjo with Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, 1998 — just a week after his release from prison. In June 1998, former military Head of State General Olusegun Obasanjo was released from Yola prison, where he had spent over three years under the Abacha regime. His arrest in 1995 followed allegations of involvement in a coup plot against General Sani Abacha. Barely a week after regaining his freedom, Obasanjo met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku, who had long advocated for his release and the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. Xscape1993:By far. Obasanjo was voted into power by the North and Southeasterners while facing stiff opposition from Tinubu and the rest of the other NADECO snake oil merchants. Today, they quickly brand any Southwesterner opposing Tinubu a betrayer. E.g, Osinbajo, Fayemi, Aregbesola and Seyi Makinde. Thankfully, not many are buying it any longer. 6 Likes |

Mbanda:The photographer is Sunmi Smart-Cole and it was published in a BBC story in the picture below (2019). Look for it and see everything in the story. They were all black and white. He has taken many of the most recognizable family portraits of the Obasanjos, including a historic 1979 photo of the family at the time of Obasanjo's first handover of power from military to civilian rule. Smart-Cole was chosen to accompany then-President-elect Obasanjo on a 28-country tour before his inauguration. This journey was intended to restore Nigeria's international image, and Smart-Cole captured historic images from the trip, including Obasanjo's meeting with U.S. President Bill Clinton at the White House.
