US Republican lawmakers seek terrorist designation for Fulani militias in new bill

Some Republican lawmakers in the United States house of representatives have introduced a bill seeking the possible designation of Fulani ethnic militias as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) over “religious violence” in Nigeria.

The proposed legislation, titled the ‘Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026’, was introduced by Riley Moore and co-sponsored by Chris Smith, alongside other Republican lawmakers.

The bill calls on the US secretary of state to consider whether Fulani militias should be formally designated as a terrorist organisation and to submit annual reports to congress on efforts to address alleged religious persecution in Nigeria.

It also urges a review of US assistance to Nigeria to ensure that American support does not inadvertently enable religious persecution or systemic violence.

Moore, republican representative from West Virginia, announced the proposed legislation in a post on X on Tuesday.

“Today, I am proud to introduce the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 with Rep. Chris Smith,” he wrote.

“The U.S. is a Christian nation. As such, we must stand with persecuted Christians around the world.

“Our legislation will build upon the momentum of President Trump designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and the recent US-Nigeria security framework agreement.”

The bill, tagged HR 7457, calls on the US secretary of state to submit an annual report to the foreign affairs committees in the house of representatives and the senate detailing efforts to address what it describes as Christian persecution in Nigeria.

Smith, chairman of the house foreign affairs Africa subcommittee, said the United States has a responsibility to pressure Nigeria to act against systemic violence.

“The Nigerian government’s blatant denial of the religious persecution occurring within its borders has only enabled the religious-based violence in the country to fester, with Christian deaths and church attacks reaching unprecedented numbers,” Smith said.

The bill references destruction of churches, kidnappings, sexual violence, and attacks on villages, estimating that between 50,000 and 125,000 Christians were killed between 2009 and 2025.

Moore said he visited Nigeria as part of an investigation initiated by President Donald Trump.

“As part of the investigation President Trump asked me to lead, I visited Nigeria and witnessed firsthand the horrors our brothers and sisters in Christ face and saw the security challenges Nigeria faces,” Moore said.

He added that the bill demonstrates that “the United States stands with our persecuted Christians”.

Tom Cole, republican representative from Oklahoma and chairman of the house appropriations committee, said defending religious liberty globally aligns with US interests and responsibilities.

Cole said the proposed law would reinforce efforts to ensure that “religious persecution will not be tolerated”.

The legislation also calls on the secretary of state to counter what it describes as “the hostile foreign exploitation” of illegal Chinese mining operations in Nigeria.

Brian Mast, republican representative from Florida and chairman of the house foreign affairs committee; Mario Diaz-Balart, republican representative from Florida; and Bill Huizenga, republican representative from Michigan; are among other co-sponsors of the bill.

In November 2025, Trump designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern, a move that allows the US executive branch to apply diplomatic and economic measures.

Trump also authorised coordinated strikes with the Nigerian government against suspected militants on Christmas Day 2025.

As the so called Nigerian leaders have failed to do the needful because of useless politics , let foreigners do it for Nigeria .. Enough of this nonsense

They should also look into sharia law that is being practiced in 12 mother states

This is good news if confirmed true. But it is a shame on southern governors who passed several anti-open grazing laws to stop the rampaging herders but afterwards exhibit cowardice when it comes to implementing it strictly.

So shameful that a foreign country is helping us do what we should have long done, as a country.

Our biggest problem in Nigeria is that our Leaders have failed to rise above Tribal & Religious sentiments in addressing issues objectively.

Thank God for the US and International Community that are seeing things from a neutral and unbiased perspective.

Buhari was busy chasing Ipobs up and down, while his brothers were and still having a field day in Nigeria till today,,
Buhari and his supporters which includes some of Tinubu supporters of today were busy chasing Ipobs when their house is on fire.. Why didn’t Buhari designate herdsmen like he quickly designated IPOB despite the fact that international community rejected Ipobs proscription ?
It all boils down on the dislike he had for Easterners..

Just look at the embarrassment Nigeria is facing back to back because we have people with questionable characters in power..

I won’t stop calling Buhari because he contributed to 70% of problems facing Nigeria today , while Tinubu has sworn to continue from where he stopped..

How I wish that horrible tyrant called Buhari could have been kept on life support long enough to read this news that his beloved Islamist terror gang members and their cows have ALL been added to drone target lists for summary liquidation on sight.

This is the most encouraging news to emerge from Nigeria in the past TWENTY years, without question.

Highly welcomed.

Those cows always grazing crops in planting season, what are they eating now? It goes to show it is a crime of mafia-law system.

In Ghana, the military is authorized to shoot crop-destroying cows and their terrorist Fulani bed-mates on sight and without any warning. That is why you rarely if ever hear about crop destruction in Ghana. The Ghanaian leadership responds to trespass crimes with an iron hand.

For the avoidance of doubt, Ghana's Christian-led government doesn't mess around when it comes to neutralizing crop-destroying trespassers. Hopefully, Nigeria will evolve to Ghana's level of law-enforcement and agricultural resource protection, now that Uncle Sam is on the scene to show how things need to be done in Nigeria.

You are right about this, they tried it, i think it was 2017/2018 and Akufo Addo oder them to be shot on sight and they all run away to Nigeria

Ghana has always known how to handle Fulani. They hardly even give them opportunities to contest for elections.

LOL....see everyhting is wrong about this post.

1.The poll is useless.Neither the Americans or NIgerians government cares about Nigerians. And for those shouting America cares...remember that the US can side with the Fulanis tomorrow, if it serves their interest.

2.And all of you NIgerians...why haven't you presseured your government to develop the railways, so that cows can be transported by rail, do things like y'know...cattle registration, and also have northern states fund ranches in the wide stretch of lands....you want the Americans to help you bomb the fulanis.

You know that when you force the US to take sides, it makes the matter worse.

Get your government to fix things, don't treat governance as good guys vs bad guys. If we had fixed our railways centuries ago, had even done proper reforestaiton and afforestation in the North, and done some proper border control self, and even worked harder (this last one is for Africa) on securing peace in Libya and getting GHaddafi to at least listen to his people's anger.....maybe things would be cool.

Infact, LIbya is a good example as to why you should not let America take a side in any crisis in any country.

If this goes through, this won;t end well. You can call me muzlem supporter, but the problems behind this can easily be solved. And yes, if you want to split the country...go and get the laws passed like the UK does, and stop complaining about the hausas blocking you for eff's sake.

The whole world knows the truth; they know who is a terrorist and those playing politics with human lives in Nigeria. It is long overdue; Miyeti Allah is a terrorist organization and should be classified so in Nigeria and all over the world.

Thank you America for coming through for persecuted Nigerian Christians.

God bless Igbos for pushing for this to be recognized globally.

God bless IPOB for their efforts to make Nigeria safer for all Nigerians.

God bless America forever for always standing for the oppressed all over the world.

ABEG SPARE US ALL THIS CRAP...

GHANA has farmer-herder crisis in the north JUST LIKE NIGERIA.

Only difference is that because their population in only 25 million, ie 1/10th of Nigeria's population, there are less flashpoints for violence.

But it's happening there as well because as we've been trying to drum into your tribalist heads, it's a West African Sahelian problem caused by increasing desertification and the need for herders to move further south to escape it and save their cattle.

So the problem needs to be tacked HOLISTICALLY, not from this primitive, myopic, tribalist prism 99% of you employ here.
