Is the era of shortlets coming to an end?

With this ban in Banana Island, those shortlets in Estates should expect same...
Nope, its just gonna evolve, and hopefully less greed. What Banana Island did is small compared to wetin HOA in the US dey do.

Shortlet Business in Banana Island estate, Pinnock Beach estate doesn't make sense from a business sustainability standpoint, These owners did not buy specifically for shortlet as it would be stupid to buy a 2bed apartment in an area which is not neccessary high demands for over N500m to make N20M profit after fees deductions.

Another reason is Lagos doesn't have enough standard hotels, and only a small handful of quality hotels so serviced apartments fill those gaps, especially for families who struggle to find hotels with family rooms or connecting rooms.

Also thanks to "village people" concerns most diaporans returning home would rather stay in these apartments, than go to their family house or stay with relative (staying with relatives can be more expensive than hotels)

So the ban came up from a standpoint of insecurity. Heard there were 4 robberies in the estate in one month.

People in residential buildings became worried about seeing new faces Everytime in the building; all in the name of service apartments. And when the insecurity rose, the ban was inevitable.

So unless the apartments are located outside an estate (which is quite difficult for the island, because they have so many estates there), Developers and the community associations may stop such in their estates because of insecurity

The Ban came about because a very high % of owners in Banana Island agreed to it, they bought into exclusivity, not so some randomers with N500k can come drag spaces with them, so there lots of estates where shortlets are NOT allowed even in Sangotedo.

Lots of Developers now build specifically for shortlets, so those ones will be safe.

Of course.

If a building is solely for shortlets, or the number of shortlets owners outnumber the private apartment owners, it would be safe

That law was already dead on arrival.

NAFDAC failed to see the economic implications of what they were about to do. Their reason was because minors can access the drinks, but rather than think of a way to address that, they chose to ban it.

Almost every consumable are trying to survive. Items that we grew up seeing in bottles, now have satchets. From Oil to soap, etc... It shows what Nigerians can easily afford.

Banning satchet alcohol is like shutting down 70% of the activities of these distilleries. It will affect the labor, the tax, and the economic system as a whole.

We are now prioritising economy ahead of health and safety.
Apart from the kidney and liver issues, majority of accidents are not really bad roads but bloodshot drivers consuming these sachet drinks

The same reasons why HOA abroad ban Airbnb and all Short Term Rentals.

Do you want to have your family next to a building that changes occupants every week

Whether they ban satchet alcohol or not, people that would have liver and kidney problem will have it from drinking other brands of alcohol.

Long before sachet alcohol became a thing, there was schenapps that elderly people drink almost on a daily basis in their house. There was ogogoro/kai kai that was sold in public places like market and motor parks.

In fact , as far back as the 90's students in secondary drink don simon sangara, baron wine, remy martin, brandy etc as a sign of showing big boy especially once they cross to senior secondary school class.

So all this talk that government does not care about health and safety by not backing out of alcohol no really gel like that. They make laws to arrest anyone that sells alcoholic drinks to minors, but outrightly placing a ban on alcohol will only cause further hardship for people whose job is linked to those companies producing alcohol.

They were sold in large quantities
Don Simeon was 1 litre and the Schnapp was a big bottle not these sachet drinks they can consume 5-10 sachets a day and also NAFDAC said majority of them are mixed with herbal concoctions which is dangerous

There are alcoholic herbal concoctions mixed with local gin or schenapps sold in cups for as low as N100 in motor parks. Those have been sold before the advent of sachet drinks, and they are still being sold sef. So if it is about herbal concoction, the ban of sachet alcohol won't put an end to it.

People who drink schenapps daily definitely consume more alcohol than those buying the sachet drinks sef.

Whether there's sachet alcohol or it is banned, what matters is for government to enforce law that prohibits sale of alcohol to minors. Also parents should monitor their children and advise them against consuming alcohol whether in small packs or big bottles.

They left someone who is a philanthropist with his own money to vote for his opponent who probably gave them small cash for vote, what were they expecting to happen afterwards ?

Make the person wey dem vote for use government money provide those services for them na. E no pass like that

these are the lessons some politicians have learnt the hard way

our electorate is fickle and entitled and do not appreciate or remember good deeds like that

same thing happened to obanikoro and banky W in 2023 elections. both of them had been doing serious grassroots work and they were upstaged by one lp candidate with no record whatsoever
