CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF DEPLOYS CSIB XV SPECIAL FORCES AS FORCE MULTIPLIER TO OPERATION WHIRL STROKE, BOLSTERING SAFETY IN BENUE, NASARAWA AND TARABA STATE

In a renewed effort to strengthen internal security and stabilise vulnerable communities, the Nigerian Army has deployed COAS Special Intervention Battalion XV specially trained troops as a force multiplier to the Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS),

The deployment follows the successful completion of an intensive Special Forces training programme conducted at the Nigerian Army Training Centre, Kontagora. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu (NAM), subsequently approved the deployment of the newly graduated soldiers to key formations and operational theatres across the country, including Operation WHIRL STROKE.

Upon arrival in the Joint Operations Area, the troops demonstrated high morale and combat readiness. They are expected to bring fresh momentum to ongoing efforts aimed at dismantling criminal networks, curbing insecurity and restoring normalcy to communities shattered by banditry, armed violence and other criminal activities. The deployment is also intended to safeguard farming communities, protect livelihoods and revive socio-economic activities disrupted by relentless insecurity in the region.

Addressing the newly deployed troops, the Force Commander, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, formally welcomed them to the theatre of operations. He charged the soldiers to effectively apply the skills, discipline and tactics acquired during their Special Forces training, emphasising that the mission demands professionalism, resilience and total commitment. He reminded them that the operational environment leaves no room for complacency, stressing that the troops have to be decisive and ruthless against terrorist and other criminal elements. Troops were also encouraged to collaborate with sister security services and agencies.

Major General Gara also sensitised the troops on the responsible use of social media, highlighting both its positive and negative implications on military operations. The newly inducted troops were also sensitized on the need to maintain cordial relationship with host communities while upholding human rights tenets in line with extant code of conduct. He also urged them to maintain operational security at all times and to conduct themselves in line with the Nigerian Army’s core values and rules of engagement.

For the NA arm aviation; they currently operate Bayraktar TB2, some sources claimed 43-46. But am not so sure or can comfirm this.
Also we operate 2 Bell UH-1H "Huey" helicopters (NA 010 and NA 011) and they have ordered 12 MD Cayuse & Magnus MF-212 light attack and surveillance aircraft.
And all of a sudden everything went quite with the procurement.
Oh, I see. Thanks for the info.

Always thought the TB2 was for NAF.

CAS MEETS AIR COMPONENT COMMANDERS, OUTLINES ROADMAP FOR SUSTAINED AND INTENSIFIED AIR OPERATIONS

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s uncompromising resolve to intensify air operations against insurgent and terrorist elements, declaring that the Service remains fully committed to decisive, intelligence-driven action across all theatres. Speaking at a high-level strategic meeting with Air Component Commanders (ACCs) on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, the CAS described the engagement as a critical warfighting review forum designed to sharpen operational effectiveness and accelerate the restoration of peace nationwide. He stressed that the gathering enabled commanders to rigorously evaluate ongoing missions, close operational gaps, and align strategies with emerging threats in an increasingly dynamic security environment.

Emphasising that counter-insurgency operations demand speed, precision, and relentless pressure on hostile elements, Air Marshal Aneke charged commanders to sustain operational dominance. “We must dominate the operational space through superior coordination, innovation, and unwavering professionalism. Every sortie, every mission, and every decision must move us closer to total security restoration,” he said, while reaffirming that the Nigerian Air Force will continue projecting overwhelming airpower in support of ground forces and joint operations. Commending the ACCs and their personnel, he praised their courage and discipline under demanding combat conditions, noting that their sacrifices have degraded insurgent capabilities and disrupted hostile networks. “Our personnel remain our greatest strength. Their resilience in the face of adversity proves that the Nigerian Air Force is prepared, focused, and battle-ready,” he added.

While cautioning that the security landscape remains fluid and requires constant adaptation, the CAS directed intensified intelligence-led operations, stronger inter-agency collaboration, and full exploitation of modern technology supported by standardised training, predictive maintenance, and responsive logistics. He assured Nigerians that the Nigerian Air Force is maintaining relentless operational momentum and will not yield ground to forces threatening national stability. “The Nigerian Air Force stands as a shield over the nation. We remain vigilant, aggressive against threats, and fully aligned with our constitutional duty to safeguard the country,” he affirmed. Reassuring the public, the NAF stated that its operational posture is designed to deliver sustained security gains, urging citizens to remain confident as the Service continues to evolve, strengthen partnerships, and apply decisive airpower until lasting peace is secured.

OPERATION IGBO IDANU I: TROOPS DEAL STRATEGIC BLOW TO TERRORIST NETWORK, OVERRUN KEY CAMP AND RECOVER ARMS

Troops of 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have recorded a major operational success under Operation IGBO IDANU I, dealing a decisive strategic blow to a notorious terrorist network linked to Kachalla Ibrahim and Shu’aibu in Kogi, state.

Advancing through dense forest, difficult terrain, and multiple riverine obstacles, the troops displayed exceptional resilience, professionalism and tactical discipline. Despite severe movement constraints caused by fallen trees and marshy ground, the force pressed forward with determination, highlighting the unflinching resolve of the Nigerian Army to dismantle terrorist strongholds and restore lasting security in the area.

The operation, personally led by the Commander 12 Brigade Nigerian Army Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi, involved troops dismounting and advancing on foot to achieve tactical surprise and operational dominance. This bold manoeuvre enabled the force to penetrate deep into the terrorist enclave, resulting in the complete overrun of the camp. Although the terrorists fled on sighting the advancing troops, a thorough exploitation of the objective led to the recovery of significant quantities of arms and ammunition, including eight boxes of 7.62 x 54 link ammunition containing bandolier of 250 rounds each and one box of high-velocity grenades. These recoveries have significantly degraded the terrorists’ operational capability and logistics base.

Following the successful clearance operation, the terrorist camp was systematically destroyed and set ablaze to deny the criminals any opportunity of reoccupation. Troops have continued aggressive patrols and sustained offensive operations within the general area to exploit the success, disrupt fleeing elements and prevent regrouping.

This operation sends a clear and resounding message to terrorist elements that their hideouts will continually be identified and neutralised, reaffirming the firm commitment of the Nigerian Army to safeguarding lives, protecting communities and ensuring lasting peace and security across the region.

Nigeria Moves to Strengthen Aviation and Airspace Security

The Federal Government has announced plans to enhance aviation and airspace security through major upgrades to radar systems and the deployment of advanced counter-drone technologies, with Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo stating that the initiative will extend radar coverage beyond the current 5,000-foot limit and introduce counter-UAV systems, including jammers, to protect airports and Nigerian Air Force bases nationwide.

The Ministry disclosed that ongoing discussions with Qatar’s Barzan Holdings will integrate world-class command, control, and surveillance systems into Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, to improve threat detection, build local capacity, strengthen national security, and advance technological development in the management of Nigeria’s airspace.

My views exactly. But part of the problem is our lack of medium lift choppers. The terrorists live in inaccessible locations difficult to reach on foot. unfortunately using vehicles they can probably hear our boys miles away. We need to use choppers to insert them or even drop them from parachutes to ensure a better element of surprise.

This is just the symptom of our COIN doctrine.

To be sure, I'm not saying we're not doing much. I'm saying we're not doing it better. Way better.

Honestly if irritated when I see words like that, sometimes you hear troops dislodge bandits/terrorists hiding inside a particular area.

Let's hope the NA would learn few things from the US intervention about COIN. Our top brass has been doing things old ways for long.

NA lacks special units like the SBSC and the airforce panthers, they need dedicated SOF that can carry out surgical strike on terrorist cell/hideout.
And like you said we need dedicated helicopters to insert and extract these SOF anytime and anyhow.
