Standing trial today is the Lexus IS 250, a proud descendant of Lexus from the second generation of the IS chassis. This little sedan car has been charged with obtaining a fast car certificate by false pretense. That is a great crime in the automobile world. There are irrefutable and concrete evidences that shows this car being disgraced and outpaced by average cars on the highway. The owners are furious and they want their money back! It simply did not live up to the hype. Before we proceed, let’s get to know the defendant.


Meet the Defendant

The Lexus IS lineup is the compact/small boy in the Lexus luxury family. In its second generation (2007–2010), the IS 250 came swaggering into the Nigerian market like a bad boy in designer shades.
On paper, it looked promising:
• 2.5-litre V6 (2GR-FSE)
• 215 horsepower
• 185 lb-ft of torque
• 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters
• Rear-wheel drive (or AWD abroad)
• 0–100 km/h in about 7.5–8 seconds
Not bad, right? The only problem I have with it is, it wore the face and body of a sports car, but under the agbada, it was still just a regular boy.

Exhibit A: The Illusion

Sharp headlights. Quad exhaust pipes. Low stance. Wide haunches. A design that whispered “performance machine.”
It looked like it could embarrass a BMW 3 Series. It looked like it could chase down a G-Wagon AMG on Third Mainland Bridge. It even sounded the part—the exhaust note is deep, bassy, aggressive.
But when you press the throttle? 🥱
What you get is not a lion. Not even a tiger. What you get is a very stylish goat jogging in fine sandals. On the third mainland bridge at 3AM, a Corolla Sport will hold its own against this fraud. What if I told you that this car was summoned here before the Toyota corolla and the corolla got here first?

Exhibit B: Why Nigerians Love It

From Ikeja to Lekki, Surulere down to Ibadan, this car was an absolute hit among young Nigerians. Do you know why?
• Portable size: easy to maneuver on the road.
• Sporty body design: looked sharp, modern, and aggressive and stylish.
• Deep exhaust growl: made you feel like Vin Diesel/Paul Walker.
• Luxury interior: leather seats, gadgets, paddle shifters.
• The Lexus badge: peace of mind + street credibility and reliability.
For many, it was the dream upgrade from Corolla, Camry, or Honda Accord. It was Lexus luxury, but without old daddy vibes of the ES.
The only issue? It couldn’t back up the hype with speed.

Let’s lay down the evidence:
• Acceleration (0–100 km/h): Around 7.8 seconds. Respectable in 2007, but for a sporty-looking car? Big letdown.
• Top Speed: About 225 km/h. Impressive on paper, but in reality you’ll need Lagos-Ibadan expressway at midnight, no police checkpoints, and prayers from your pastor.
• Handling: Sharp steering, balanced chassis. It feels fast, which is why it tricks so many.
• Reliability: Still a Lexus—less wahala than European and german rivals, if serviced right.
So yes, it drives well. But speed? You are better off with a bmw from @bmw guy.

Let’s cross-examine the IS 250 against its competition:
• Lexus IS 350: The big brother. Same body, but with a 3.5-litre V6 and 306 hp. This one is the real wolf. The IS 250 is just wearing wolf’s clothing and fooling itself.
• BMW 3 Series (E90): The car the IS 250 desperately wanted to beat. But the BMW left it coughing dust every time. Ask @bmw if im lying. There was this saying I saw on reddit:
“If you want drama and speed, buy a BMW.
If you want peace of mind, buy a Lexus.
If you want to pretend you have speed, buy an IS 250.” I cried that night.
• Mercedes C-Class (W204): Not a drag racer either, but carried prestige. Park it beside the Lexus and you will see the wide difference.
• Toyota Corolla & Matrix: Believe it or not, on Abuja roads, these humble Toyotas could embarrass the IS 250. Especially if the driver knows what he is doing.

Before we pronounce judgment, let’s acknowledge the positives:
• Reliability: Typical Lexus, won’t disgrace you and leave you stranded.
• Style: Still looks modern 15 years later.
• Luxury: Interior finish is sweet, lets be honest.
• Price: Relatively affordable in today’s Nigerian used market.
• Comfort & safety: Good suspension, airbags, solid body.
So yes—it’s a sheep. But at least it’s a sheep wearing very fine wolf skin.

Lol. Love this analysis. I used IS 250 early 2022. Bought it from a car dealer at Ibafo side who confessed to me that he bought it cheaply from a broke yahoo boy. Car was superb from exterior but badly damaged from interior. I really loved it and still bought it despite glaring issues. The dealer was transparent and even encouraged me to wait for another, lol.

I disagree with your speed analysis OP. If there was anything I enjoyed during the short 6months I drove the car usually between Lagos and ibadan, it was the speed and it's sporty nature.

Yea i notice this about the car..I drive a Hilux 4plug turbo charged...I noticed when I ever i jam this lexus for highway, it doesnt come close unlike Lexus ES350.
But this particular lexus 250 looks more sporty and has a loud Exhaust.
