What do you think? Is she right or wrong?

Re: A Lady Sparks Outrage Online Over Jobs & Earnings In Nigeria. What Is Your Take? by Imattertoo(op): 7:57am On Feb 15
To me, I think she's 99% right. Even the other 1%, I'm not sure.

To even get a job is not easy, not to talk of buying a *brand new" car with salary.
Re: A Lady Sparks Outrage Online Over Jobs & Earnings In Nigeria. What Is Your Take? by brain54(m):
She isn't far off the mark...

Why the outrage.

Very few jobs can... less than 10-15% of jobs (top company executives) which is abysmally low.( I believe I'm being generous)

Not entirely correct if she says no jobs... but not very far off the mark as only a very few jobs can!

That's a lie stretched too far, although very few and requires huge years of experience but there a jobs like that outside politics in this country that can comfortably do that.

for any body less than 40, I don't think there is any blue or white colar job we're you will be able to buy a brand new car in one or two years with just your salary.

There are jobs in that pay well, the matter is entirely a skill issue, most people want jobs but they lack the skills. Imagine an civil engineer that does not know autocad or a software engineer that cannot implement a data structure.

the mere fact most people rather splurge their earnings on material items like car, tv. Instead of them to diversify their income they are thinking of purchasing a brand new car. I pity who will marry this one because you are engaging yourself with a liability instead of asset.
Re: A Lady Sparks Outrage Online Over Jobs & Earnings In Nigeria. What Is Your Take? by Kaycee54321(m): 10:08am On Feb 15
I see the point she's trying to make.

But this is a fallacy of hasty generalisation - "There is no legal job..." makes her theory absolute, rendering it false.

A mid trim 2025 Toyota Camry fresh from the factory can cost around 30K USD - roughly 40m...

To be pessimistic, call it 60m plus shipping.

There are white collar jobs that pay 6m net per month (excluding bonuses) - I know a C-suite guy earning this amount. And this guy has a boss who earns more...

There are people who have big bonuses after their multi million Naira salaries.

Professionals (like those in sales) can make unbelievable money from commissions per sale...and that can really rack up in volume depending on the type of deal brokered.

So, yes, a brand new car can be bought legally in Nigeria.

The only fact is, compared to the general population, the fraction of people who can purchase a brand new car is very small.

PS: Currently, I can't afford a brand new car. Because una no get manners here. Next thing, someone will come and say their father is claiming rich.

This might be true if you think about it

If you're a successful trader in speculation like a crypto trader, you can

If you are a CEO of a successful business you can

But majority of people can not afford new cars
Re: A Lady Sparks Outrage Online Over Jobs & Earnings In Nigeria. What Is Your Take? by brain54(m): 10:49am On Feb 15
Never thought of it before...

But it's actually indicting on Nigeria if majority of the population can't afford brand new cars and have to depend on buying used cars from foreign countries.

Local manufacturers like innosson also has to do better to make prices of brand new cars more affordable.

We can't continue being a dumping market for second value goods. It's no crime for majority of Nigerians to use brand new cars and first grade goods and services o.

She is coming from a place of ignorance. Even today with this economy a large number of businesses buy brand new vehicles for staff in particular roles.

They call them function or status cars. For all intents and purposes the person assigned the car is the owner and will buy it at net book price after 4 years unless he is sacked. As I write this I was at a meeting with an lasg parastatal and everyone there had a brand new Toyota hilux assigned to them.

Unfortunately once you have not worked in corporate you think these things are a pipe dream

For an individual, it DOES NOT MAKE FINANCIAL SENSE TO BUY A CAR BRAND NEW. This is the same even in the West. Fininacial advisers typically recommend but a two or three year used car

A brand new innoson has less value than the equivalent used Toyota. People are driving 2003 Toyotas. What is the oldest innoson vehicle on the road?
Re: A Lady Sparks Outrage Online Over Jobs & Earnings In Nigeria. What Is Your Take? by wonder233: 11:09am On Feb 15
The mindset of paying out of pocket and in full in one fell swoop for everything is what is making people outraged.
A Nigerian wants a house, he starts thinking how to "gather" the entire money for it.
Abroad that people drive mostly new cars, people don't pay for them at once at of pocket, they use finance facilities that enable them pay in installments. Same with housing, they use mostly mortgages.
Same with even gadgets and home appliances.

Nigerians are not future thinking people. People want everything now. Nobody wants to do anything long term.
That is why nothing works.

that’s why there’s no Toyota or Honda assembly plants here. Cos only 1% can afford a brand new car in a country of 250m +

Who will set up that kind plant in a country where the president elect boldly said he’ll reduce purchasing power of the citizens .

How much does a brand new car cost?
What brand of car?
What is the salary of the highest paid employees or workers in the country? (Gifts and other connection earnings aside).
I guess she means “legal” salary earners. ( just pay cheque)
She did not say business men or CEOs
She might be wrong and she might be right.

How much is a brand new car in Nigeria?
As in, brand new, not clean non accidental low mileage tokunboh?
A brand new 2026 Toyota Camry costs about $30k to 45k roughly around N50m or so.
How much is a workers salary?
Even a take home of N500k without touching it would take 100 months (8.3 years) to gather. If you're saving N250k monthly, that will take almost 17 years.
There are very few jobs earning N5m or more per month legally but they are very rare.
She's not completely right.

Re: A Lady Sparks Outrage Online Over Jobs & Earnings In Nigeria. What Is Your Take? by Rich4god(m): 1:31pm On Feb 15
There is....

A brand new car is around 12-20m

An assistant manager (AM) in most Nigerian banks earn about 1.1m monthly. And they are been paid about 3.2m yearly as upfront.
Thirteenth month and leave allowance is about 1.3m

So lets assume he's saving 500k out of his monthly salary per month.

500k x 12 = 6m + 3.2m + 1.3m = 10.5m in savings yearly.

So technically speaking if you get to AM level in the banking industry, in less than 5 years you should be able to buy a tear rubber car.

So the lady's statement is not entirely true.

Quite true. In other climes like Germany, instead of students hustling for jobs which are scarce, secondary/tertiary students are drafted into the national apprenticeship programme to learn the skills of their choice. This ensure skills are passed down and that nation building continues.

Re: A Lady Sparks Outrage Online Over Jobs & Earnings In Nigeria. What Is Your Take? by franchasofficia:
She is correct to a great extent.

The only companies in Nigeria that can pay none executive and none managerial staffs salary and allowances that can afford the staffs a brand new Toyota/Honda/Hyundai cars after working for like 5 years, are:

1.) Mobil
2.) Total Energy
3.) Chevron
4.) Shell
5.) Agip/Saipem
6.) Hyundai Energy
7.) CBN
8.) NNPC
9.) DPR
10.) Schlumberger
11.) Some foreign NGOs like ICRC, World Bank, WHO, UN and it's subsidiaries
12.) US Embassy and US Missions
13.) British Council and some other European Embassies/Missions

Note: I am not talking about making money at your workplace through the Nigerian usual office corruption and corrupt practices, I am talking about legitimate salary and allowances as speculated in the employment letter only!

Which brand new car goes for 12million today? Maybe the lowest models of Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Tata, Innoson, Jac, etc?

Why must you mention managerial levels, how many are they in Nigeria?

The poster is talking about basic jobs, not executive or managerial positions.

And which manager in any of the aforementioned companies you listed would want to save money for two years to buy the lowest models of Kia/Hyundai/Jac/Nissan/Innoson/etc?

The lady is correct.

Nigeria need to look into reviving or creating a credible credit system, that's the only way to reduce corruption in Nigeria.

If Nigerians can start buying things like cars, houses, etc on loans and mortgages, it will reduce pressure on civil servants and salary earners honestly.

It is the system of outright purchase at once that usually put Nigerians on pressure to commit bad things and engage in all forms of corrupt practices to meet up with demands

She is simply rephrasing what UnkleAyo stated months ago, and both are false.

There are jobs that can enable a person to buy such a brand-new car. As you stated, sales jobs and jobs in NGOs (remote jobs) are examples of avenues to earn such amounts. Theirs is even worth mentioning because for most high earners, they work in quantitative roles. But why does she think a C-suite employee cannot buy such a car? Abi na every body be entry level staff?

This is my problem with those TwitterNG illiterates. They never believe something can be true or false. It is their way or the highway. Too many illiterates are on that platform.

I really blame Buhari because the dude decimated the economy, thereby making young folks today believe certain things are unattainable.
