Spiff20:was the King Solomon not wealthy? Even Alexander the great stated something about vanity as well Yet he was very wealthy as well. So regardless of the vanity statements, they still tried to have more until their death. The bottom line is it's only when we die everything ends, as long as we are still on this earth, man must work to chop And if man works and make a lot of money, he may not have to work harder in retirement. He wouldn't have to do hard labor self at old age. So na poor man mentality dey make people talk down on expensive stuffs |

folake4u:Nice to know. A Chinese colleague and I were discussing watches recently. He seeks my opinion on watches to buy when his money becomes big. Over here, the second hand market for high-end products is very strong as Japan is famous for authenticity, quality assurance and most citizens don't despoil/debase their products. So, products look clean and ready to use. Every time I head to shopping malls, I always look at the watch stands. I have seen second-hand Tag Heuer and Rolex as high as $5K equivalent. New Rolex goes for not less than $15K on their Japanese websites. I window-shopped at Tag Heuer stand at Hamad Airport, entry level watch begins at roughly $2K. Interestingly, they hit almost $3K equivalent on their Japanese websites. It is good to live where literally every major watch company has a store and places ads in major areas. In Nigeria, na only Polo House dey offer am. I use a Seiko and aim to complete the Japanese trio: Seiko, Citizen and Kuoe before buying Western companies' watches. I really do love wrist watches. P.S. In my books, it is better to spend a low amount buying a new no-name brand or even a second-hand popular brand than to spend excessively buying a fake watch that is popular. Any 100K - 1m naira Rolex is obviously fake! |

GanagiBeetrus:Dangote does not fancy watches, maybe? He owns a yacht and that is more expensive. People rate items differently, and this has nothing to do with their wealth status. |
| Re: Top 8 Most Expensive Watches In The World by Gerrard59(m): 3:36pm On Feb 15 |
Spiff20:People who can afford those timepieces are wealthy enough to reside in safe places. Your analogy is similar to folks who say: Why not use the money to purchase a property in Banana Island in buying a property in Malta and collect a second passport. Whereas any Nigerian who can buy a property in Banana Island already owns a second passport. |

Gerrard59:Nice to see we share passion for wristwatches. I find them very classy. I wouldn't expect less from the Japanese market actually, their quality is always top notch. I don't know how they've maintained high grade fashion accessories to electronics and whatnot for years. Surely, Nigeria can learn one or two from them. ![]() You own an original Seiko? Amazing. I've seen many dupes of it. ![]() Certainly, you're right on your last paragraph. When I see or hear some Nigerians talk about owning a Rolex, I roll my eyes. I'm also of the view that buying an original no-name is better than buying a fake luxury brand. I find it very tacky. Do you like smart watches as well? I do. For a while now, I've been tripping for a Garmin smart watch. It's very expensive but rugged. I hear even the US military folks use it. Although they have feminine specs, for instance, the Garmin Lily. |

folake4u:I will say it is the culture because there is a strong maintenance culture ranging from roads to train stations/platforms to buildings to everything. I have seen so many examples. They take maintenance very seriously. My regular train track was built in the '70s and has been expanded across lines periodically. As I write, maintenance works are ongoing in some stations. The central station was revamped as well. I went to my former city, and in its central station, a portion was revamped, making everything look new. Buildings get checks every year and must undergo lights-out maintenance twice per annum. I have seen roads repaired even when nothing seemingly looks wrong. The indelible experience was walking to my then part-time job, seeing men at work digging the ground, then the following morning, everywhere has been perfectly floored. Later in the night, they continue digging, and the next morning, everywhere is looking good. Then they continue that night. They take maintenance very seriously. You own an original Seiko? Amazing. I've seen many dupes of it.If Seiko is fake in Japan, it is better they close all watch stores o. I would rather own an original watch of an unpopular brand than own a fake of a popular brand. Most times, the fake popular brand costs more than the unpopular one which is original. Seiko watches are sold across many independent watch stores. Then you have the Grand Seiko. No wonder na mostly mid-age men dey own these pieces because if young man like me put all my monies into watches, I will be left broke. ![]() Certainly, you're right on your last paragraph. When I see or hear some Nigerians talk about owning a Rolex, I roll my eyes.lol ![]() Obviously, Rolex is the go-to watch for the tyros and general watch enthusiasts, but they're expensive. The first time I saw a second watch cost $5K equivalent, I wondered why a second-hand watch costs so much, only to re-check the name and saw "Rolex". "Ah, no wonder". Rolex costs o. Not less than a million to 1.5m yen for an entry-level second-hand watch. See here: https://www.watchesofswitzerland.com/en-int/pages/rolex-certified-pre-owned. These are not new/unused watches. So imagine new ones. I think the minimum price I have seen for a new Rolex was $25K. But honestly, it is good for citizens to be prosperous. Chinese tourists will come here because of the cheap yen and buy every luxury product they can think of, from iPhones to luxury bags to watches etc. Name them. To them, these products are way cheaper than in Hong Kong or Shanghai. One thing I noticed, these buyers no dey get plenty children. Most are single pringle. I'm also of the view that buying an original no-name is better than buying a fake luxury brand. I find it very tacky.Yes. My first watch was Edifice which I used for a decade until I changed. It just does not make sense to spend a lot on a fake branded watch. Save/invest up, then buy the entry-level watch of a popular brand, even if it is second-hand. There are many such companies, and it has a big market. Do you like smart watches as well? I do. For a while now, I've been tripping for a Garmin smart watch. It's very expensive but rugged. I hear even the US military folks use it. Although they have feminine specs, for instance, the Garmin Lily.My first time coming across the name, but I have seen folks wear smart watches, mostly fitness enthusiasts. From Google search, it is a solid brand. My view of smart watches is that they are only good for fitness. It might sound off, but that is my initial take on it. Can it be worn to events or regular outings or even church? This will mean owning at least three watches, with one serving for exercising. Shey you play footie? It is a good buy. The same with an Apple watch. Good if one owns an iPhone and is actively running/hiking/cycling. |

Gerrard59:Indeed they have a good maintenance culture. It is nice to see that train tracks built in the 70s are still functional till date. Well, we cannot say same for our beloved country. We still have a really long way to go. Lmao a fake Seiko watch in Japan would be an interesting headline in Japan media outlets. ![]() I'd rather buy an original of an unknown brand, people don't know that fake luxury items are very expensive. The Maths always doesn't Maths everytime, just buy an original. Tsk! Lol don't worry, you'd soon reach the age you'd be using a Grand Seiko. Rolex is an established brand and doesn't come cheap hence there are fakes everywhere. I don't blame them though, Rolex watches are quite exquisite. Lol you and your 2kids anthem. Anyways, you have a point there. It is pointless birthing more than 2 children these days. I'm not a fan of large families. Yessss, Garmin is a very solid brand. Lol, smart watches are quite versatile. They can be worn to events, offices, even church. Yes, I play footie. I know it's a good buy. ![]() |
