I have Enugu on my mind end of this year. I see a 7 bedroom duplex at a ridiculous cheap price
In Nigeria, you have freedom to live anywhere you want my friend.
Also, Lagos is still a part of Nigeria so my point about Nigeria is still valid.
You are really ready for them, grin grin. I relocated back to Nigeria 2014 after 20 years living abroad,I have been doing very well here, but alot of people thinks I am crazy but they don't know

What is the average monthly salary in Canada vs Nigeria. Why not relocate to Nigeria to enjoy the cheap life?

/
Should we also consider that Canadians don’t have to hustle for money to pay private primary and secondary schools for their children?

What about the money to pay for expensive fuel plus I better pass my neighbour generator to pump detty, shitty , smelling borehole water here huh

I also buy I big avocado for N400, do the maths and convert to $. When next you complain about Nigeria, remember we have cheap and easily accessible fruits and vegetables.
As of late 2025, an estimated 139 million Nigerians, or about 62% of the population, live in poverty, with many surviving on less than
N2.15 per day.

It's Cheaper for YOU.
I spend over 200k a month to feed my family. I can do that because I'm in middle level management. That is double of what our junior staff earn in a month. Minimum wage casual workers with family are essentially starving.
You're talking all these because you have Canadian Dollars nest eggs assurance.

I don't want you to de-market or bad-mouth Nigeria, that's non of my business.

The question I wanna ask you is...... Can you compare the living conditions of an average Nigerian to that of an average person in Canada?”
They live better because they have access to credit facilities......

The minimum wage of one person in Canada cannot cater for him and his family for example....

With the low minimum wage in Nigeria, if the government put health care, security, education and roads in place... Trust me... Living with that low minimum wage will make you happier than a regular Canadian who have to sometimes work 2 jobs just to make ends meet..... Every country has its advantages..... Not saying Nigeria is at its best at the moment... There is definitely room for improvement but don't throw Nigeria under the bus....

Yes, you make a good points but, with all the above, more people are still miserable over there than in Nigeria.
You do realize Nigeria is still a developing country and, we still have a long way to go but despite all that, we have it good here in Nigeria.

On band A, I have lights for about 22 hours in a day and when the light is off, the kids go to play table tennis or basketball in the compound, don’t forget we have good weather all year round in Nigeria. This week there was a mass shooting in BC Canada leading to death of 10 students. This goes to show nowhere is perfect or totally without one form of problem or the other.8
The more you have this conversation with Nigerians who haven't had the first hand experience of some things that motivated your decision the more you get into needless arguments. I guess it is better for people to go have their own experience and make their decisions based on that.

Seriously, were you expecting foods to be cheaper in Canada than Nigeria? You are comparing a country that should have a global presence in food exportation to one that depends mainly on imports. There are some fruits that you can't produce in Canada no matter what you do. What people talk about more is affordability of those cheap food. A family of four will need close to CAD500 a monthly to eat a balanced diet in Canada. For a two income family earning minimum wage, that's less than 10% of their monthly gross income. On average, how much is a two income family earning in a month in Nigeria? What proportion of that is spent on food?

This is the most stwpid front page content I have ever seen on nairaland and seun should sack the moderator that pushed this to front page.

The question is not the amount you bought it but how long will it take you to make the amount.

Nigeria

- Minimum wage: 70,000 NGN per month with an average of 8 hours of work per day and 5 days per week, totaling 160 hours per month.

- Hourly wage: Approximately 70,000 ÷ 160 ≈ 437.5 NGN/hour.

- Time to earn 500 NGN: 500 ÷ 437.5 ≈ 1.14 hours (about 1 hour and 8 minutes).

United States

- Federal minimum wage: $7.25 per hour (as of 2026), and some states have higher rates.

- Time to earn $4: 4 ÷ 7.25 ≈ 0.55 hours (about 33 minutes). If calculated based on the highest state minimum wage ($17.95 in Washington, D.C.), it would take approximately 4 ÷ 17.95 ≈ 0.22 hours (about 13 minutes).

In UK With 12pounds per hour wage, it means it will cost less than 3pounds to buy the banana which is still about 13mins wage.
It is very shallow minded to compare the two

I relocated in August last year, I and my family are enjoying Nigeria and the biggest regrets is not relocating like four years ago. It has been a positive experience here in Lagos so far.
You relocated after making enough money that would enable you and your family escape poverty in Nigeria.

How many Nigerians can afford add fruits to their daily diet? You only think things are cheap because your purchasing power is strong. Speak for yourself! Never generalize! Anyway I don't blame you. Many like you become detached from everyday economic reality after attaining financial security.

You are comparing affordability to price of goods. The fact that things are cheaper in Nigeria compared to Canada does not mean that an average person can afford those things in Nigeria.

WhiteIverson:
You say it's cheap but what is the purchasing power of majority of the citizens?

Let's compare

In Nigeria, the minimum wage is 70,000. If you were to spend your minimum wage only on 500 naira bananas, you would only be able to buy 140 pieces.

In Canada the minimum wage is $16.95. Multiply that by 40 hours weekly and also multiply by 4 weeks. You earn $2,712 dollars monthly. If you were to spend your monthly salary only on bananas at $4 dollars each, you'd be able to purchase 678 pieces.

When you want to compare prices of different countries, there are a lot of factors to consider. How do you expect the prices of bananas to be in cheaper in Canada than Nigeria?

With this your analysis, I doubt you've ever stepped foot out of Nigeria.

I agree with you, but convert your hourly, daily, weekly or monthly wage.

Then the comparison will be completed

Lets just say you are being mischievous on you are on a cruise

#500 is your 2nd highiest currency not in Nigeria is it not even up to 50 cent

$4 is like 3rd to the least currency in the Us ... so what are you joyous about

make i burst your bubble, with a minimum wage of 70k .. A Workers earn 3500 per day

you buy bannana #500 + groundnut #200 ... 700 don go e fit belleful .. You are left with #2800 to survive in one day, transport nkor

Us minimum wage is $7 per hour × 8 hrs ... Between worker wey spend 500h and worker wey spend $4 who cost of living favor

Where in Canada is minimum wage above $5,000 per month? $60,000 a year? If you are open minded, you can earn more than that amount but not on minimum wage.

I won't call the person that start the topic an emergency lover of Nigeria. I'm a lover of Nigeria but I won't compare the price of goods in Nigeria with looking at affordability.

The challenge, in my view, is that despite all the natural advantages we have in Nigeria—no harsh winters, no hurricanes, and only short periods of extreme heat—we still haven’t fully utilized them. Nigeria should be a major global producer of food.

Sometimes I walk into stores here and see oranges imported from South Africa, Morocco, and other countries. Yet when I was growing up in Nigeria, my grandfather had about six orange trees on his farm. Orange season ran from October to December, and he didn’t even treat them as commercial crops. Most of the oranges went to waste.

If we were truly serious about agriculture, we could generate significant foreign exchange from farm products—far more than we’re doing today.

I ain't throwing Nigeria under the bus, just calling a spade a spade. I won't even advice my enemy to remain in Nigeria if the person got the choice of either remaining here or relocating to Canada.

What a stupid comparison. It is hard to believe that this is coming from someone that claimed to have spent some time in the west. The question should be what are the purchasing power for these commodity compare to earnings in these countries? 1 week earning can feed you for a month in most western countries but one month minimum wage In Nigeria can hardly buy a bag of rice. Rubbish comparison!

You all do a one sided analysis.

Stay with me.

How many Canadians can afford that 4Cad banana and how many Nigerians can afford it?
Stay with me.
Let's assume both individuals work minimum wage in ontario, its 17.60//hr = 2816 monthly while in Lagos its 85,000.
Single room rent in ontario +utilities is 900, while in Lagos might be 15,000 less Nepa, gas, security etc. Let's put it at 20,000.
Transport in ontario, using the bus irrespective of distance is 8cad/day or 135/month while in Lagos depends on mood Let's put it at 30,000 (live in dopemu, work on the island).
Stay with me.
Home cook meals in ontario Let's put it at 150 monthly, Lagos, let's put it at 20,000 (eat ponmo not chicken etc)
Total-Ontario will have 1631 left while Lagos will have 10,000 left.
Do you think the Lagos guy will be able to afford banana/ he has not bought data/call cad o
While the ontario guy only has to pay 50 cad to rogers for both call and internet monthly .
With this, is the 4 cad banana still cheap or expensive?

Because you have money you are speaking without considering earning capacity of the larger populace. Mind you, it's not

The truth is with money, Nigeria is good to live but saying cheaper is relative .

can someone on 150k salary with family be thinking of banana, pears and avocado? Can such a person pay for the Band A electricity you're talking about?

Bro come here where I live and with your money, you'd be scared to even live life and go out because of insecurity. I know I'm not using the kind of car I'm worth but I'm somehow scared of even upgrading. My fuelling stations are all controlled by me in pseudo as I don't want any threat to myself.

Nigeria might be okay for some of us but we shouldn't talk when you're not seeing what the general populace face. Every day you step out, you see poverty in the whole streets.
